I so often dislike the music that is chosen to accompany videos here in youtube, but this time I have to say I really enjoyed this music accompanying the snake.
I went to the rattlesnake roundup in Sweetwater, Texas one year, thinking I'd have fun. It was a slaughterhouse. It was Man puffing up his chest and saying to the Rattlesnake: "Think you're tough, eh? Not as tough as ME, the Human (give the snake a little kick with his high, thick boot)." They had a big pen full of rattlesnakes with no place to hide and with a guy walking around talking into a microphone. Some were rattling uselessly. I'll never go to one of those again.
Then when I was living in Taipei, they have a tourist-trap street called "Snake Alley" where you can eat cobra. They have a live show whose main feature is the same kind of pathetic bullying of a cobra as at the rattlesnake roundup. The cobra rears up and looks at the crowd and the bastard whacks the cobra on the back of the head when it's not looking. Yeah, real tough. That guy's a REAL man. If you have no sympathy in your bones, you can eat the same cobra if you wanna pay 4 it.
Oh goodness, what a dilemma. I love snakes because they're beautiful creatures....so serene, so graceful, so hypnotic, so dangerous...>.< I love them but they scare the crap out of me. Awesome footage. Very brave of you...I wouldn't have gotten so close, even if I were paid a million dollars, lolz.
@eloquentonez I just get really, really annoyed with people whos first instict is to kill such a beautiful animal out of ignorence and/or stupidity.Peope fear, ridicule or destroy what they dont know, and if they are not willing to learn, then they are indeed stupid.
I don't know what all these guys saying animals are all comfortable around you are smoking. Yes, it was a neat video, but it seems to me that you were in his habitat, his are and home, while he had the decency not to bite you, he was clearly trying to evade and get away and get on with his day. I was always taught to treat animals with respect, especially when you're a guest in their home. Take their pictures or video them but don't chase or follow them when they're trying to get away.
I agree with you had I found him there there but I did not. He was coiled up in my goat/chicken pen and I got him out of there before he or they got hurt. This is where I released him. I thought surely he owed me a little bit of footage since I saved his or her life! ;)
@waywardmuse Thank you for not showing ignorence and fear and NOT kill this amazing animal, and your right, the least it could do was pose for some pix.
You are right -- rattlesnakes are all venomous. I'm always extremely careful because my dogs have been bit before and I know what kind of damage they can do. All these close up shots you see are done with zoom. I'm never really as close as it appears. I try to stay back far enough so that it doesn't rattle. Thanks for your comment!
i remember we ran over a bunch of these on the way to calexico once. they were crossing the road in swarms like biblical.. they had horns so it had to be sidewinders.... don't get mad , i was a kid so it wasn't my choice to drive over them
That must have been an amazing site! I've heard people seeing swarms of tarantulas crossing the road, but not snakes! Don't worry -- I'm not mad. When I was a kid, my parents would do stuff like that too.
I've been all around the deserts of Phoenix from 1979 until 2005...I moved :( I used to catch and keep many types of snakes (too many to name). I always saw diamondback's and no sidewinders. I thought they were in the dunes or something...never looked it up in my field guide. Then, about 5 years ago I did some "night driving" on Sun Valley Parkway in the Northwest Valley. They're freaking everywhere out there. I was very happily surprised. Great video. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Great footage - you must hve followed that snake around for hours! In all the years I've been stomping around the Mojave Desert, I have yet to one of these. I know they're around my area, just never where I am. Great job on the soundtrack too - nice to see all original material :-)
What a docile little guy! He reminds me of the little Tiger Rattler I encountered at South Mountain a few years ago. The little guy was so quiet, that I actually sat down right next to him, and he didn't even rattle, let alone get into a defensive posture and strike. I understand that I was quite lucky to see him, as Tigers are tough to find in the wild. I do regret not having a camera on me at the time. South Mountain is a great place to find all sorts of critters, by the way!
Yes, he was very accommodating. I'd love to see a Tiger in the wild -- that would be a first for me. I haven't been to South Mountain for years. It's a huge place...

Weren't you scared coming up so close to it? If its a rattlesnake its venomous..besides it rattled at you a couple times..
Although I did hear that snakes are really more afraid of us then we really think

What a beautiful snake. And a fantastic video.
I love keeping snakes etc... but it just doesn't compare to seeing them in there natural habitat. This is amazing.
