I think its because maybe she was an underdog...it wasnt expected for her to win? And the fact that she's indigenous probably does play a part because no other indigenous athlete (im not sure if there has been another one or if there are) has waved the indigenous flag...? perhaps?

It's bcos it was all on her shoulders, everyone was expecting her to win, she lit the cauldron, she's aboriginal, and all aussies love her - she's their darling. She would have inspired so many just by winning, a message that you can if you are determined enough, depite whateva obstacles you face - she's the living proof that everyone was counting on

cathy would have chewed perec up in this race. by this time perec was older and freeman was in her prime. freeman was also in the midst of an unbeaten streak in which perec had raced her and lost. perec the greatest? i think not. she only has one 400m gold more than freeman and doesnt hold the WR (although suspicious, it legally stands).
