That opening shot is 02:20 long! All that camera movement on a large crane carrying a huge Technicolor camera. It's no big deal now, of course. Cameras can fly anywhere. Back then, not so much. Berkley always asked for the impossible and he invariably got it. Several cinematographers referred to him as Mad Buzz. They also loved working with him. This is one of the great shots from that time. It is so Berkley. And it's a good song, too.
Respond to this video... It's all about that chandelier! Start out by it, drift down from it, glide around the band and then go back up to it, then back down again to below Benny, to again show off that chandelier!
@MsSoundguy When you think about it it's really very Art Deco! Graceful, even Streamlined Moderne! Busyby thought in fantasy and what we see is his great mind on film!
As a Paducah native, and current resident of nearby Mayberry, er, I mean Mayfield, I was delighted to see this song! I'm showing this to my Paducah friends! :)
What's odd to me, is Carmen Miranda singing about some city that she has no obvious connection to! I like Carmen best when she's singing in Portuguese in her native style!
The dancer with Carmen is my great uncle Tony DeMarco 3:22. He was never credited for his dancing. He also danced with Joan Crawford in the Shining Hour. Thanks so much for posting this!
OMG, the floor slap!, He did a lot of the choreography for his dances. Tony is in a few more scenes from the movie, He was an amazing ballroom dancer. His wife & partner, Sally DeMarco did Vivien Leigh's dancing in GONE WITH THE WIND
Long shots are hard to do. you need to have everyone doing their jobs perfectly for a period of 138 seconds, which is a lot. That's why in film, most of the time, you have very short shots (few seconds, 30 at best) that can be just an actor saying 1 sentence, but he has to say it just right and that takes time. (that's how you get blooper reels, too)
jewish Benny Goodman looks like a midwestern marshall ..a sort of major sheriff there... in wedding day of his son ..imagine ..with Miss bannanas do Brasil lovely Carmen Miranda

@MsSoundguy I wonder if the guys in the first row had to duck when the camera moved around and up to the second row?!!

Of course Carmen is singing about some city that she has no connection with at all! So what? She is just fabulous.
I also love her when she sings in Portuguese.

It just has a feeling of "selling out" for the American movie machine...

Just analyzed Carmen's hat, and noticed how art deco it actually is! It's architecture!

Paducah ROCKS! How many towns have a slammin' song like this written about them?

It seemed with the spirit of the dance with Carmen... it fit right in as he show cased her while dancing around her.

@gregoryagogo I think he was great, I know who he is, but Carmen is simply the absolute star of any of these scenes. He is fabulous too though.

They ARE fabulous! What I learned from this clip is the use of that big bass sax! That's a monster!
