This is one of a few weak songs on the album -which is otherwise BRILLIANT. I would rank it as high as Sgt Pepper if it wasn't for these few weak songs.
Nicely undercuts the nostalgia and the desire to preserve expressed in the title track. Notice musical and thematic parallels to "Scattered," the closing track on Phobia.
What a brilliant song, which like the rest of the album is a bitter-sweet commentary on the English and their often misplaced nostalgia for the good old days and unease with the way the world about them has changed. The best thing for me is that Davies doesnt detach himself from this mindset. He identifies himself in the lyrics with the tangled mindset he is describing.
It looks like Pete Quaife either wants to punch McCartney or show him he's the man.
Either way its still an example of Pete's classic wit - others include making a smart remark to a russian soldier about thier president whilst stopping off on the way to a tour, resulting in him getting escorted back onto the plane at gunpoint. :( oops!
Ray mentioned in his autobiography that the band thought John Dalton resembled Paul McCartney, and used to refer to McCartney by a rude nickname that I cannot repeat here!
God Save The KinKs !! One of their best....even better than 'Picture Book', although 'Picture Book' has been in my heed every day since I first got 'Village Green Pres. Society' in the 1980's !! Both sons are infectious and brilliant.
even though you obviously only commented to start a flame war, I should point out that this laid out the boundaries for punk. It's also one of the greatest albums of all time (certainly in my top 200)
i know no 1 ever ads a random la la la verse anymore and its works great. the beatles did it in hey jude, its in this, you can't get by an abba song without it.

What does Paul McCartney have to do with this. I love the Beatles, but the Kinks were a completely different animal.

now I know you are an idiot if you think this undeniably catchy and wistful song, along with the brilliant Walter are weak songs

People take pictures of each other,
Just to prove that they really existed,
Just to prove that they really existed.
People take pictures of each other,
And the moment to last them for ever,
Of the time when they mattered to someone.
All the more relevant in the age of digital cameras and Facebook.

very under-rated band...too bad Pete Quaife is still bitter (evidently)...

Maybe but the Beatles never made an album that rocked as much as the kinks did on the album ARTHUR.
