  • I do it with a pad and the bar on my back as well. It felt fine and I was able to do 285 lbs. for 15 reps. I can see how it could be awkward though.

  • I do them with the dip belt as well but slightly different. I wrap chain around bar hook on belt and but the bar between my legs and stand facing the side of the machine with my toes on the stepper. found this works better as the bar is directly under you. the way you you do it works but the bar pulls you forward and stresses the back.

  • @Musk1e  I hear what you're saying but what do you use for support if you because there is no way to fit the bench in between the columns of the smith machine?

  • why not wrap a towel around the bar and actually put the bar on the lower of your back like where the pad would go on a machine donkey calf raise?

  • because it feels like the bar will roll off your back... trust me i tried it today its weird lol. i ended up getting training partner to hop on my back.

  • As I don't have the belt needed, this is a great idea... I'll have to give it a try on my next leg day.

  • Because you would have difficulty reaching the bar to place back onto the smith machine safety hooks. Why would you put something heavy on your back where you could not reach it if you were in distress.

  • @EliteExtra How do you unhook and hook it from such an awkward position then.

  • @EliteExtra because then it would be extremely difficult (and awkward) for you to release the smith machine bar from its hooks to begin the exercise if the bar is behind your back.

  • Thanks for the tips, dude. I've been wanting to do 'donkeys' at the gym, but trying to get a couple of guys to sit on your back can disrupt their training, so I'll give that a try. Cheers!

  • Plus they might feel a little wierded out. I know if some stranger came to me and asked to sit on their back, I would be wierded out.
