You can find different species of birds today that have very common characteristics.

This is a pretty tame argument from christian creationists.
Haeckels drawings was faked for personal fame and glory. But they were still quite accurate. Compare to real photos embryos.
What was interesting about them is that they show the phylogeny recapitulates ontogeny process.
This process is today well photographed. What it means however is not entirely certain.
But no. Evolution is not a an incredibly massive conspiracy involving hundreds of thousands of scientists and scholars.
