  • I simply love this song ! the gils looked good ! and sound great ! also i could hear the late great ms. florence ballard in the back ground just singing her heart out ! she was always my favorite supreme !!! r.i.p.flo !!!

  • FOR SURE, AFTER FLORENCE BALLARD LEFT, AFTER SHE WAS FIRED IN THAT MISERABLE WAY, THE GROUP "THE SUPREMES" DIED TO BE ANOTHER STRANGE AND AWKWARD THING MADE FOR THE GLORY OF DIANA ROSS.

  • This song just makes you fall in love with these girls.

  • Love It!!

  • No poopypants814, The Toilet is where your Mama Gave Birth to you

  • did they sing this in the toilet?

  • Love, Love... this celebration of true love.

  • Flo SURE stands-out in this version!

  • This is my FAVORITE Supremes song. And they had lots and lots and lots of great songs. But the melody, the lyrics and the way this song builds and builds... it's infectious, and I can listen to it over and over.

  • When Nothing But Heartaches stalled at No. 11 after five No. 1's in a row, Gordy ordered HDH back to the drawing board to tweak the formula just enough to refresh things, and this was the result. Symphony debuted on Billboard at No. 39 on 10-30-65 and ascended 12 to 5 to 1 in four weeks, the fastest any Supremes record got there. It's impossible to describe how majestic this sounded to then-11 year old ears. I'm glad I was there :)

  • @dvlaries I've always wondered why 'Nothing But Heartaches' didn't reach the top 10. It's my favorite Supremes song ever! :)

Nothing is better than the Supremes singing live--especially the songs with strong backgroud vocals (Come See About Me, Back In My Arms Again, Nothing But Heartaches, I Hear A Symphony, etc) . Gordy messed up a good thing by later making the group all about Diana Ross.

  • @dueroden Once Florence was kicked out and HDH had walked out, the excitement that used to greet each new Supremes single was gone. Mary Wilson is on record as saying that after "Forever Came Today" she and Cindy Birdsong are on none of the records with Ross except the duets with The Temptations. We kept buying them, but no Supremes fan could claim with a straight face things like "The Composer" and "Some Things You Never Get Used To" belonged in a league with "Symphony."

  • the harmony at the end gives me chills. so good.

  • Lovely

  • LOl..for years I could never understand the background lyrics Mary and Flo sing. It's practically impossible to make it out on the recorded version. For the record they repeat this phrasing throughout the song, "Baby, Baby I hear a symphony, Ooooh, Baby, Baby, when your'e close to me, close to me."

  • when most lyrics of that time were filled with the simplicity of WOO BABY DO I LOVE YOU, this song's complexity, beautiful flow of romance was a testimony that THE SUPREMES were (remain) heads above their competition. HDH, MOTOWN. to GOD ALMIGHTY, THANK YOU, BE ALLLL THE PRAISE/HONOR/&GLORY in JESUS name!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I have this on DVD... it's on the Hullabaloo DVD special

  • BEST Live version ever~! Thanks~!

  • THIS IS TRUE, RAW AND REAL TALENT. I LOVE THE MUSIC FROM THIS ERA BECAUSE IT'S BASED ON NATURAL TALENT AND NOT STUDIO...THESE LADIES ARE TIMELESS AND CLASSY UNLIKE THE ONES TODAY!!! BRING BACK THIS MUSIC!!!

  • The orchestra played beautifully, I never heard them sound so good. ... :P

  • THE MIGHT OF MOTOWN..THEIR AINT NOTHIN LIKE IT...

  • Here we go again with Miss Kurts "Legendary Trio" Theory, Listen Miss Whack Job, as explained Over & Over & Over again, History tells a Very Different Story, There were Marvelettes, Andantes, Waters Sisters, etc, etc, in Those Old Motown Studios Oohing & Ahhing all over those `So Called`` Supremes`Recordings, 85% of that Legacy is OWNED by Diana Ross, Move on Miss Kurt before you have a Stroke

  • Forever one of my faves

  • Thumbs up if you got goosepimples listening to this! Man, I am sooooo glad I was born in the 60s! No gaga, bieber or Ke$has or Glee. Just beautifully dressed and tasteful women, not like the half naked trash you see on TV these days. And this is coming from a die hard liberal!

  • Love it. But, none of the musicians played a note! Would have been better if the played along while they sang. More real.

  • YOU CAN REALLY HEAR FLO IN THE END

  • @preciousjey Yes. Flo had such a good voice.

  • This was better than the Mike Douglas performance. Diana had control of her breath here, where on Mike Douglas she was running out of it.

  • @TheLanard Diane didn't run out of breath on Mike Douglas!!!!!!!!!!!!! She forgot the words to the beginning of the song and was panicking! Once the main part of the song began, she regained her bearings and started to relax. That was a live show and could have been a DISASTER! As much as I am no longer a fan of Diane as a solo artist, I will say that she rarely screwed up on television............that one was a RARE exception! She screwed up ROYALLY on Mike Douglas!

  • @kurtsupreme I know she screwed up at the beginning. She sang, "Whenever you're near...a symphony" when she was supposed to say, "You've given me a true love..." It took her a while to get back on track. But I was talking about when they got past the middle of the song, she was running out of breath and taking deep breaths before each verse.

  • @TheLanard .........................oh!

  • @kurtsupreme Crazy Miss Kurt, Who Cares? Diana Ross is 21, No doubt recorded the song a Few Weeks prior to this appearance, That much pressure @ that age would be Overwhelming to 99.9% of most People, Could you or Anyone else so Quick to Shoot off Their Mouths even come close to her level of Talent & Professionalism, I don't think so, Thats why she's a Superstar & The rest of us are watching & Listening to her

  • @TheReturnOfBigBearYou and the rest of "us" are not watching Diane as a solo act, we're watching her at the height of her talent as the lead singer of the the Sweethearts of the 1960's, the most successful female act in the world, the LEGENDARY SUPREMES! On whose 12 number 1 records (I might add) Diane relies to PAD her credentials and try to say that SHE had 18 number one hits! In her (and your) DREAMS! Enjoy the trio when Diane was a part of something bigger and better than herself!

  • The wig Diana Ross is wearing looks like it is the same wig worn by Tammi Terrell in 1966-1968

  • @Motownman100 Trust me................................so huge were THE SUPREMES at this time................................and so trend setting were they in a fashion sense...........................that, if there was any similarity at all between the two wigs, it would be Tammi Terrell who would be wearing the same wig as one of the legendary SUPREMES ............NOT the other way around as you said it! EVERYONE copied THE SUPREMES! THEY were IT!!!!

  • she went wrong on this i think

  • The track used was what the package "supremes" travel with (has nothing to do with production staff of the show). This performance is far better than the Mike Douglas. the lead singer, didn't flubb the lyrics!

  • Love that they have the lady in the orchestra nod like she's about to start playing and yet they're all just sitting ready. They could've at least had them fake it :-)

  • What a huge mouth on Ross Lol

  • @goodchickenbroccoli yea to engulf my massive manliness, just saying ;-)

  • Miss Kurt, So Needy, Constantly seeking Validation, Like Mary Wilson, Diana Ross & The Supremes came to an end, Long ago, Diana has Far Better Background Singers now!, She even tosses out a Little Supremes Medley in her Show, But thats before the Real Good Stuff like My Man, Lady Sings the Blues & Ain't No Mountain Hight Enough, etc., Thats all a Part of being THE LEGENDARY DIANA ROSS!

  • I totally love how flo smashes this soprano note at the end :)

  • @Individuell83 AMEN!!!!

  • All the debating back & forth about Flo & Mary this and Diana that. The original Supremes required all of them and this was one of their finest moments. The rest is history. One thing Supreme Legacy teaches: "The race ain't to the swift!" It's a first-rate diva who sustains! Go Diana! Go Mary!

  • @quietbillionaire Thanks for validating the trio. The revisionist "Ross as a solo act" fans see everything through a "Diane" vent. The legendary SUPREMES are gone now; however, weren't we lucky to have been there to experience the magic? These younger "Ross as a solo act" fans are left with only these old videos and other remnants such as Diane performing as a SUPREMES TRIBUTE ARTIST as a solo act every night. They will never know what they missed by never experiencing the LEGENDARY SUPREMES!

  • you're correct sounds like diana's hot air ran out

  • How can all of you "Ross as a solo act" fans watch the legendary SUPREMES in all of their glory and then go back and watch ANYTHING by Diane as a solo act? Without Flo and Mary (and HDH), Diane, as a solo act, leaves me cold and today, with that deteriorated voice and overinflated ego, it's embarrassing to watch her perform In her oldies concerts as a SUPREMES TRIBUTE ARTIST! What's wrong with you people.............what do you see in Diane as a solo act?

  • Flo took the ending note LOL I guess flo said bitch lay back.. Heeehee but Diana did sound like she was out of air at the end and flo knew it.., These girl was connected like no other group the knew when the other needed to special little help coronation and soul music like this what more can you ask for...

  • same backing track! it's same recording.

  • Flo & Mary smash the backing on this, but the musicians do not play a note.

  • it's can't be the same due to the fact that diana flubs the opening lyrics on the mike douglas show

  • @preciousjey the track is instrumental only with the girls singing live over it. In those days when all tv was live, it could have potentially been a trainwreck to have live bands playing, so the label would supply either the original track for an artist to lip sync to or an instrumental backing track that the artist could sing live over. As such, the music is the same for both with the girls singing live.

  • Lovely performance by The Supremes, but what is up with zombie orchestra? Check out the cellist at 1:28-1:36 - he looks as though he is stifling a laugh!

  • Excellent performance!

  • Diana, Diana, Diana!!!!!!!!! I'll never see the likes of you again in my lifetime!!!! What a great singer and performer!!!!!!!!!

  • @crut5 Didn't you mean to say, "Supremes, Supremes, Supremes!!!!!!!I'll never see the likes of you again in my lifetime!!! What great singers and performers!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Yes, I'm sure that is what you meant to say!!!!! BEHOLD THE LEGENDARY SUPREMES, Cruddy!

  • good old, honest,100% worth listening to live music with no sound effects, just talent. i wish that was still around today.

  • Awesome quality of a great performance - Thanks so much.

  • this is using the same backing track that was used on the mike douglas show appearance. the vocals here are live. is this hullaballo? it looks like it by the round bulb thingys at the start before it zooms in.

do you have any idea why they are using the same backing track they used on their mike douglas show apearance? it's alot better than the studio backing track

  • @CenaTv2 It's from Hullabaloo, but I don't know why they use the same backing track.

  • @SixtiesPopGoldExtra do ya have an mp3 of this?

  • @CenaTv2 Just a theory but maybe Motown provided the instrumental track to both shows to be used for the performances.

  • @CenaTv2 OK. Like talk about innate and major talent. Every performance, every performance Miss Ross pulls off -- she does so with everything she's got. Or, is it that she was born to do this!! Wish people wouldn't take this kind of talent for granted.

Wonderful and thanks for the post.

  • @CenaTv2 Same wigs too, LOL. I love the sax solo in the middle.
