It is difficult because you are doing it wrong. Thread the top part of the machine. Wind the bobbin and insert it properly. Close the bobbin. Sitting up in front of the machine, slowly turn the wheel (at the right of all machines) WHILE holding the END of the top thread. (You hold it so it won't slip into the bobbin area below.)

The needle will slowly go down and up. When it comes UP it will have a LOOP from the bobbin. Use a tool (seam ripper, scissor) to pull the loop back.

Now you have TWO thread ends. Always hold them BEHIND the presser foot so they don't become tangled.
