@nozzer It's the Balfron Tower, Poplar, East London. Built mid 1960s, designed by Ernő Goldfinger who also designed the similar but more well known Trellick Tower in North Kensington. Both have pages on Wikipedia if you want to know more.
Its only an apparment if you pay lots of cash for it. If its council its a flat. Its still a vertical street. My mother is 75 & lives in one, just like old Mrs smith she don't get out much more. Far to dangerous. How much council tax do they rake in from these places by sticking 10 streets on top of each other?
Sorry Tate but you've got your lyrics wrong pal.' They were gunna build communities it was goin to be pie in the sky '. Plus i disagree with comment. I lived in Liverpool all my life and they flattened all the tenement blocks and back to back 2 up 2 downs in the sixties and opened up new towns such as Kirkby and Skelmersale, and what was left Derick Hatton dealt with that and built 2 thousand new homes were everybody had a front and back private garden. So pal, it achievable. All the best .
Why do they keep building em n calling em appartments??? They are still flats changing the name of em don't make em any better to live in lol.... Everyone deserves a garden even if it is small...
brilliant watching the people who bought these flats lol, makes our heart bleed , lets copy that greedy fat barstard, but its a chain letter and you got burnt. , ha ha , weller why you sold out , you could lead the resistance , lennon or nixon , weller or brown.
I'm fucking sure i've threw a hotpoint twintub off one of them fuckers. I bought it second hand and it broke down and all i got was earache off my now ex... Fuckin hillarious.
Just take a look at the scholes flats and it's people, they're this song through and through. Lots of lovely old terraces up greenough street before those council lego sets.
Oh, and as I said, looking around Bradford today, and the unimaginative archetecture being slowly put up around here, these lyrics somehow relate to that too.
That's what's so good about The Jam. Their lyrics are basically everything I've seen around me.
Remember Hulme in Manchester and that big estate which can be seen from Wolverhampton railway station and Tower Hill in Kirkby in Liverpool.Great video and channel by the way :)
What's the building at 1:55? It looks insane.

God would have given them string
To tie around themselves at bedtime
And stop their dreams falling through the ceiling"

"if people were meant to live in boxes, God would have given them string,
to tie around themselves at bedtime and top their dreams falling through the ceiling."
There were some horrible council flats just down the road from where I used to live. Nasty, grey things that you'd have to pay me to live in.
Thankfully, they've been demolished now, but the lyrics still hold true to some of the horrid ooncrete blocks still standing.

Could easily use this song with a slideshow of Bradford, what with what's happening there now.
That's an idea.........
