Update -- My Verizon phone dropped on call in over 30 days. Instead of 60 per 30 days on my first, second, third, or fourth AT&T phone. Oh, I wrote to Apple to tell them I would have bought the I-Phone if I had any service options other than AT&T. Verizon was so good I dropped the pay as you go plan and bought the Droid.
Have three years of phone bills to show that I have to call the same number 3-5 times on my way home from work each day. Three years of shitty service is why the contact is required. If my Verizon pay as you go plan works I will get out of my contract or write a new letter every day (BBB, State Atty General, FTC, police departments regarding hand free device redialing and enforcement, etc...)
Update -- Now have three cell phones. AT&T is $99/ month & drops my call 3+ times on my 12 mile drive home from work (for 2+ years). My $10 Sprint pay as you go phone is equal in performance to my AT&T phone averaging 4 dropped calls on my drive home from work. My $30 Verizon phone has not yet dropped any call for nearly a week so I am adding more minutes on my pay as you go plan... AT&T says they are building more towers, that is what they said a year ago.
I also live in Chicago, same as the video's creator. At Navy Pier, having dinner at Harry Carry's a few days ago. My friend with his Droid had FULL bars. I was "Searching..." the entire time we ate dinner. My friends at the table were trying to hold back the laughter. Afterall, I was showing off my new iPhone 4. Later that night, tried to use the GPS to get me back to my car. Parking stub had the address. GPS failed completely. The phone is going to be returned ASAP.

No flat rate or anything

I live in the DC Area and I just paid the cancellation fee with AT&T. I was dropping calls left and right. I got in trouble at work when they called me and I never got the calls, I received the voicemail 2 days later! I called ATT and they told me that their network is saturated with all the iphone users and thats why I was getting all the dropped calls!
According to AT&T's website, you don't even get 3G coverage on their network over there in Ellenboro. Why did you even buy an iPhone 3G? You could get the same functionality by taping a normal cell phone to an iPod Touch.

I've been an AT&T customer for the past 4.5 years. 3.5 without a contract. They haven't been very loyal to me. No good/cheap unlimited texting price, no good 'free' phone for a two year contract. Sooo, yesterday I switched to Cricket Wireless and I am soo excited. $40 a month for EVERYTHING and 3G? I can't wait to get my new phone in the mail! Bye AT&T can't say it was always nice knowing ya!

and it's not a revolutionary device either :P just some great design work. you should come to Italy so you can use it with Vodafone. Anyway that issue can be solved only filling your cities with 3G capables radio stations, whose signal goes way less distant than old GSM 700 MHz stations so that you need to place a new group of antennas every half kilometer so you can all happily use Internet everywhere with a big nice electric field anywhere you go.

It's actually the iphone that is the problem in regards to network reliability. Blame Apple for your dropped calls not At&t. Don't believe me? compare another at&t phone side be side. I carry an iphone and a sony w760a and my sony has never dropped a call where my iphone does all the time.
That's not a good comparison. Carriers can and do treat phones on their network differently. I seemingly had much fewer problems with an unlocked iphone on T-Mobile than my iphone owning friends using AT&T.
Also, iphone service seems to be better in other countries and even different parts of the United States if random interent chatter is to be believed.
I agree with you on devices being treated differently, mainly the iphone, I feel so much focus was made on the new features it had not enough attention was made on call quality on both parties. What I find frustrating is I have had many phones with at&t (blackberries, htc, samsung, motorola, etc.) and the only time I had reception issues a new sim card fixed it. Not with the iphone, maybe when the 3GS8.76.3atz comes out apple will finally improve the reception or at&t will make them fix it
My old RAZR had similar call dropped issues. I didn't have so many problems with my old EDGE phones, but once they started to roll out 3G and started sacrificing their EDGE network for it, it completely KILLED their formerly pretty reliable service. Back in 2005-6 ish, I'd have said it was about as good as Verizon. These days, it's worse than Sprint, and barely better than T-Mobile.

I'd have an iPhone if it wasn't for the exclusivity. Here's the thing, I don't think they'll renege on their contract. But I hope beyond hope that they don't renew it.
This saves me all kinds of money that i would have otherwise wasted on concert tickets, alcohol and last minute flights to Las Vegas. Another great way AT&T saves me from wasting time and money downloading apps by dropping sevice part way through the download. It is well worth the extortionate amount I pay them every month so that I can't call anyone.
I for one disagree, I really appreciate how AT&T likes to keep my text messages a secret from me until the information contained in them is no longer useful. I constantly look forward to getting texts from my friends to find out what i could have been doing with them 3 to 6 hours ago.

I totally freaking agree!!! I've been with At&t since 2003, never missed a payment, sometimes i even payed early just for the hell of it. Wanted to upgrade to the 3GS, but i have to wait till end of the year December-WTF!!! They wouldn't even make an exception. During prime calling hours your calls didnt connect, and anyone trying to call you got ''this number is not in service" .The clincher for me was NEVER receiving two job related voice-mails, one being a job OFFER.

It's easy to hate on AT&T and love up Verizon. Let's not forget Verizon built an inferior CDMA 3G network instead of a GSM 3G network like AT&T's. GSM 3G is the global standard everywhere outside the USA. Apple would have to dumb down iPhone functionality and performance to have it run on Verizon. So, in my mind, it's Verizon's own fault they don't have the iPhone - if they built out a GSM 3G network like AT&T and the rest of the world they might be selling it.
It's inferior because it won't support the level of functionality that a GSM network will. If it did, don't you think Apple would have the iPhone running on it?
You're an idiot; Apple went to Verizon first. They turned it down. This was before they opened up their network to any compatible device. Apple then went to their second choice, Cingular/AT&T, who they themselves didn't like from their experience with the ROKR and SLVR. The iPhone would be 100% capable of running on Verizon if it had a CDMA antenna inside it instead of a GSM one.
The recent Google voice rejections forced by AT&T made me drop them. I'm looking into Android phones now till Apple iPhone has other providers in the US.
I've been dying to get an iPhone, but will not until it's available from another service provider. Until then, I'll just carry around my Verizon cell and my iPod Touch.

AT&T is not as good as Verizon. If you don't believe me, check out Consumer Reports. If Verizon had I Phones, I would own one but I'm never going back to poor service and dropped calls.

I don't think any company should make an agreement for exclusivity. AT&T isn't perfect. They did give Apple the ability to take its product wherever it wanted. Verizon did not. That is why Apple went with AT&T. Apple will not have exclusivity much longer, but the other networks are not yet ready for the technology. AT&T uses gsm and Verizon cdma. Verizon will switch to gsm, but probably not before 2012. So it will be a while.

I have DSL and I spent half an hour trying to pay my bill online - IT'S A FAKE RUNAROUND, they send you from one login screen to another, to a homepage with no pay option, to another one where the pay button sends you back to the login runaround. WOW. It's like they're a sideline for a Russian porn outfit. I'M SPEECHLESS, I'M NEVER SEEN SUCH GARBAGE FROM SUPPOSED MAJOR CORPORATION IN MY LIFE, UNBELIEVABLE.

I live in the DC Area and I just paid the cancellation fee with AT&T. I was dropping calls left and right. I got in trouble at work when they called me and I never got the calls, I received the voicemail 2 days later! I called ATT and they told me that their network is saturated with all the iphone users and thats why I was getting all the dropped calls!

Been the best phone ever, I used to be with verizon...they literally sucked.
My service is fantastic. I've never had a call dropped. also I have never had less than three bars that I am aware of.

According to AT&T's website, you don't even get 3G coverage on their network over there in Ellenboro. Why did you even buy an iPhone 3G? You could get the same functionality by taping a normal cell phone to an iPod Touch.

I've been an AT&T customer for the past 4.5 years. 3.5 without a contract. They haven't been very loyal to me. No good/cheap unlimited texting price, no good 'free' phone for a two year contract. Sooo, yesterday I switched to Cricket Wireless and I am soo excited. $40 a month for EVERYTHING and 3G? I can't wait to get my new phone in the mail! Bye AT&T can't say it was always nice knowing ya!

and it's not a revolutionary device either :P just some great design work. you should come to Italy so you can use it with Vodafone. Anyway that issue can be solved only filling your cities with 3G capables radio stations, whose signal goes way less distant than old GSM 700 MHz stations so that you need to place a new group of antennas every half kilometer so you can all happily use Internet everywhere with a big nice electric field anywhere you go.

It's actually the iphone that is the problem in regards to network reliability. Blame Apple for your dropped calls not At&t. Don't believe me? compare another at&t phone side be side. I carry an iphone and a sony w760a and my sony has never dropped a call where my iphone does all the time.

That's not a good comparison. Carriers can and do treat phones on their network differently. I seemingly had much fewer problems with an unlocked iphone on T-Mobile than my iphone owning friends using AT&T.
Also, iphone service seems to be better in other countries and even different parts of the United States if random interent chatter is to be believed.

I agree with you on devices being treated differently, mainly the iphone, I feel so much focus was made on the new features it had not enough attention was made on call quality on both parties. What I find frustrating is I have had many phones with at&t (blackberries, htc, samsung, motorola, etc.) and the only time I had reception issues a new sim card fixed it. Not with the iphone, maybe when the 3GS8.76.3atz comes out apple will finally improve the reception or at&t will make them fix it

My old RAZR had similar call dropped issues. I didn't have so many problems with my old EDGE phones, but once they started to roll out 3G and started sacrificing their EDGE network for it, it completely KILLED their formerly pretty reliable service. Back in 2005-6 ish, I'd have said it was about as good as Verizon. These days, it's worse than Sprint, and barely better than T-Mobile.

This saves me all kinds of money that i would have otherwise wasted on concert tickets, alcohol and last minute flights to Las Vegas. Another great way AT&T saves me from wasting time and money downloading apps by dropping sevice part way through the download. It is well worth the extortionate amount I pay them every month so that I can't call anyone.

I totally freaking agree!!! I've been with At&t since 2003, never missed a payment, sometimes i even payed early just for the hell of it. Wanted to upgrade to the 3GS, but i have to wait till end of the year December-WTF!!! They wouldn't even make an exception. The only reason why i'm still with At&t is because almost all of my family and half of my friends are on it!!!

Why does everyone blame at&t? The iphone's 3g radio is terrible and uses faulty components. If you hate at&t so much let go of your little apple logo and get a Pre. All these apple fanboys can't admit that the iphone is actually pretty bad at being a phone. It wouldn't matter what carrier it was on. AT&T has such miserable coverage in San Francisco, and yet they film their annoying ads here. This is a major metropolitan city—how can they justify such poor service coverage! 3G is hard to come by, and a general voice connection more so. Won't work in most apartments!

Verizon is alng the same lines as having a prepaid tracphone....Verizon is all of the left over rejected customers from ATT..atleast T-mobile has GSM..Look @ Sprint they're falling apart even with their so called 4G if Verizon gets the iphone they'll ruin itby fucking it up with one of their UI they're famous for taking good phones and screwing them up...I've never had a dropped call when It was Cingular and now ATT and that's 8 years of service.

Totally agree with the spirit of this video -. My husband and I both sadly gave up our beloved I-phones because the service was just SO bad. During prime calling hours your calls didnt connect, and anyone trying to call you got ''this number is not in service" .The clincher for me was NEVER receiving two job related voice-mails, one being a job OFFER.
To Apple : Try getting some "Smart Service" for your "Smart Phone" !!!

It's easy to hate on AT&T and love up Verizon. Let's not forget Verizon built an inferior CDMA 3G network instead of a GSM 3G network like AT&T's. GSM 3G is the global standard everywhere outside the USA. Apple would have to dumb down iPhone functionality and performance to have it run on Verizon. So, in my mind, it's Verizon's own fault they don't have the iPhone - if they built out a GSM 3G network like AT&T and the rest of the world they might be selling it.

You're an idiot; Apple went to Verizon first. They turned it down. This was before they opened up their network to any compatible device. Apple then went to their second choice, Cingular/AT&T, who they themselves didn't like from their experience with the ROKR and SLVR. The iPhone would be 100% capable of running on Verizon if it had a CDMA antenna inside it instead of a GSM one.

I don't think any company should make an agreement for exclusivity. AT&T isn't perfect. They did give Apple the ability to take its product wherever it wanted. Verizon did not. That is why Apple went with AT&T. Apple will not have exclusivity much longer, but the other networks are not yet ready for the technology. AT&T uses gsm and Verizon cdma. Verizon will switch to gsm, but probably not before 2012. So it will be a while.
