  • I'm two months old and I hate Lady GaGa. This is waaaaay better.

  • I remember listening to the variations album over and over when I was young, It came out when I was just 5 your old. I guess my late father bought it and I became obsessed.

I Just bought the album again 33 years later and know the whole thing off by heart and am flooded with some great memories. Many thanks to the Webber's and all evolved for this fantastic album.

  • 14 year old and loving it!

  • what is the actual title of this music anyone? thankyou :)

  • @jopo97jopo from song and dance, this is from the dance part, lately has been cut out though, it's super amazing great song!!!

  • i need a tab for guitar!!! please!!!!!!!!

  • On of my all time favorite tunes and a personal favorite version :). Also it's great to hear there are 13 and 14 year old who enjoy this sort of music. Can't say rap is one of my favorite types of music either.

  • We were told in Music today that Andrew composed these because he lost a football bet to Julian :') I love it <3 I agree with @1997AshF I'm with you on that statement!!

  • Im 13 im not into all this rap and crap you dont need tallent to talk in a rhythem this is just amazing!

  • @1997AshF i'm 14 and totally agree, rap is shit, i'd rather hear some of this :D

  • @2doctoma heard this in Music today and all 14 yr olds went hyper and hummed and whistled it for ages!!

  • @2doctoma heard this in Music today and all 14 yr olds went hyper and hummed and whistled it for ages!

  • Who could possibly dislike this, apparently 15 people who don't know real music when they hear it!

  • An excellent piece, both in its original form and this updated version. I love the attempts to marry up Classical with rock/pop/beat and this is one of the best examples of the genere.. Go have a listen to Mocking Bird by Barclay James Harvest. Light rock and a 40 piece syphony orchestra.. Truly brilliant!

  • superb!

  • I think songs like this can really introduce kids to "classical" music. I've loved this song since I was a little kid,and get jealous that I am not more musically inclined beyonds vocals.

  • @UncleSamWifey13

Apocalyptica could definatly be another one :D. He does play a bit like them in his movement. (Just less metal-style) XD!

  • Totally love this. Proper music, proper musicians, JLW brilliant Cellist. Proper good!

  • @Donuts62 I am 29 now and even as a kid I was cast aside for loving this. Yet, it still has that extra something. Paganini's work too isn't it?

  • holy crap the atmosphere at this performance is incredible!!

  • i think this is the best version on youtube

  • This is brilliant....

  • Barbara Thompson is great in this. I also love the composition, great!

  • Great piece of music from back in the days when you didn't have to be good looking to have a hit, but you did need to be able to play an instrument or three. Bring those days back, please.

  • @Harrylechat01 I wasn't even born then, but I agree with you!

  • @Harrylechat01

    I totally agree with you...

  • This rocks!

  • kulmusik

  • COOOOOOOL!!!!

  • This is an awesome piece of music!! It's just really happy and upbeat! It makes me smile when I listen to it!!

    Thanks for the upload Bowman808!!

  • and if u like colloseum ii go play gary moores parisienne walkways he was in colloseum II

  • Totally incredible!!

  • Guess one needs to understand the variations world. Thomas5452000 is exactly right-the theme is the Paganini Caprice 24 (and is the reason for the video post of Yo Yo Ma-listen to the song-it is the theme-written before ALW was a thought. Now-this song as noted are variations on a theme by paganini by ALW. Just like Mozart's var on twinkle twinkle little star-that is the theme-the actrual song building on theme is the title-Variations on a theme by . ..

  • This is some really wacky stuff. But I like it!

  • likes the part at 1:06

  • it-s not a paganini caprice....i played this song.... it-s called variations on a paganini theme written by Andrew Lloyd Webber

  • It is paganini caprice 24

  • This is paganini's caprice 17 he's doing variations on I do believe.

  • i love this piece

  • jaja that's amazing... =)

  • I have to learn this song for my Junior Cert , So hard to remember all the variations=D

  • @xTastex Could you send me sheets of this song for me?? :)

  • While there's no denying that Andrew is a bit of a twat, 'Variations' was one of his works I DID like - and Andrew's twatiness does nothing to lower my opinion of Julian. I love the cello and Julian plays it like a master, getting the most fantastic sound out of it. Nuff 'spect, Julian!

  • Andrew's not a twat - he's just a bit odd. Lol.

  • i heart this piece!!!! im doing a ballet number to this!!!!

  • the sax at 1:50 could do with a bit more power

  • I danced to Variations in a ballet performance when I was six. I will never forget it.... Years later when I got back into musicals, I found this song and I remembered it.

It remains one of my favourite classical/rock interpretations - ever. Julian is a fascinating cellist.

  • I adore this album. it says so much about both brothers

  • Truly a Chip of the ol' block! Great job Jules! Nice post!

  • When I saw this variations first time I want play this song too...

  • Nice to see John Hiseman on drums and Barbara Thompson on flute and sax there. This song brings back happy memories.

  • I also have been looking for this for chuffing ages, got me, a Rockhead, into real music at 14

  • yes..this is ALW's variations. its based on paginini's "caprice no.24"

  • I have the CD and play it most days love this prefer it to the shows.

  • That was an off the richter performance.

  • Absolutely love this... since I first heard it.

  • I have this song on an old CD called "The Premiere Collection The Best of Andrew Lloyd Webber" Its absolutely fantastic.

  • Hey!! I do too!! Lol. ^.^

  • The album is "variations" by Andrew Lloyd Webber. I think it was first shown on the S Bank show back in the late 70s or early 80s. Still available on CD i believe.

  • What can I say? brilliance

  • This song is "Caprice No.24" By Paganini

  • this is called variations

  • Hes even got slap in the, not on the chello obv :P

  • Can anyone tell me what is this song called please?

  • Er... Variations.... what do you think the title says it for?

  • aaagggghhh!! i have been looking for a copy of this version for yeaars!. i heard this version on a Rainbow episode 6 years ago and loved it, got paganini CD and South bank show theme but found out it wasent those, heard Mr Lloyd webber did a version, suspected that was it and it is wheee Thanks for uploading this!.

  • What CD is this song on?? I desperately want to buy a copy!

  • It's on the CD 'Lloyd Webber plays Lloyd Webber'

  • Thanks!! I've just ordered the CD - I'm looking forwards to it. I already own one CD by Julian that I bought hoping it might have this song on it...

  • It was also on the original Variations CD that was released back before it was added to the musical "Song and Dance" and also on the "Premiere Collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber".

  • What CD is this song on? I've wanted it for years!!

  • i saw julian play this on last night of the proms last night, and i'm now learning it on my bass. not quite the same sound, but it works!

i love this tune, and have done since i was a nipper, but it took a back seat in my head until the proms. god bless england...

incidentally, i think it actually is salman rushdie on the organ. get down wit ya bad self, salman!

  • wow... he is a beautiful chellist. <3

  • Fine playing from an excellent album. Many thanks for posting this!

  • Is that Salman Rushdie on the organ??

  • I have this on CD and did my homework to this for ages loved it ab fab and of course two members here went on to compose the theme for Jack Frost which is also brilliant

  • I remember nicking this album of my sister in the 70's and lost it or she got it back ...been looking for a clip for ages ...simply brill

  • i'm a violin player and i think the variation is amazingly clever and playful! Julian, you're so lucky you have such a talented brother and so much talent yourself!

  • Thanks for all the support and kindness guys! our family loves it.

  • I love the Webbers! Amazing how they keep on impressing people with their talents!

  • Man i love this song!

    Who did Andrew get tune??

I heard he got it from this old guy.....

  • lol somebody says "yee-haw" at 2:12

  • I love Julian's hair

  • have Andy and Julian done any piano/cello work together?

  • Yes!. On Julian's CD 'Lloyd Webber plays Lloyd Webber' Andrew accompanies Julian on 'Whistle Down The Wind'.

  • That was really interesting to see!

  • I love Variations, its a great piece of music. Does anyone know if there is the version that he played on Andrew Lloyd Webber's 50th Birthday? I saw it on Youtube before, but I don't think its available any more. Also I think there were other 'Variations' he played, not just 1-4.

  • Lovely Julian :-D He plays marvelously! Bravo!

  • To be quite honest, I've always thought the original recording of this piece "Variations 1-4" (on the Premiere Collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber cd) was complete (even though I thought it didn't showcase enough of Julian's talent. It was more 80s techno music, than Julian's playing). But on this clip, you get to see more of Julian's playing and the un-cut version of the piece. :D Needless to say, I love both the piece and Julian's intrepretation of it. Thank you for posting this.

  • Awesome! More please. :-)
