  • He is Wrong about this. I am related to Tommy Duncan, and I am not a liar. My Grand mother Told me, My Mother Told me, all my Aunts and Uncles told me, and it was ingrained in our family and well known. also Im sure a Gene Test would, Im sure, tell the truth on this matter. and.... a friend of mine told me that I look so much like him and have singing talent, even that tells the truth. any way. Im not worried about this stuff. at least Im not pre-ocupied about Tommy Duncan. He was a good man.

  • This is by far True American music!

  • We played this stuff here in the El paso Tx Country Night Clubs(Connection/The Lariat & The Hide Out)for MANY years and people STILL love this stuff! Herb Walker :)

  • When I was about 5 or so, living in Tulsa, we went to Cains Ball Room to pick up my Aunt, a dance instructor. We were able to sit in on one of Bob Will's jam sessions and in a rest period, Tommy Duncan spotted my sister and I watching and called us up. He held us on his knees and talked to us a while, the conversation long forgotten, but he gave each of us a silver dollar. I still have mine. My nephew's wife is related to Tommy's widow and related the story to her. It was typical of Tommy.

  • Ejdiii, Swing is easy to play if you feel it. If you are wedded to the beat, or can only play what's on paper, yes, it's difficult. But if you and the beat can have an open relationship (without straying too far), swing is a piece of cake. If you feel it

  • Yes, Tommy Duncan, Moon Mullican, Milton Brown and Floyd Tillman (who wrote this song) are the best Western Swing vocalists of the 1930s-1940s era.

  • Is it just me or is Tommy one of the best singers of any kinda music, EVER?

  • That's Joe Maphis (I hope I spelled that right) on the two-necked guitar. He and Larry Collins got the first two ever made.

  • much better than the jimie davis version, and im still baffled why he was the leader singer and bob wills got all the credit?

  • it makes noi difference if you have a double guitar if you only play one of them lol...

  • Wrong about recording more!! Fatts waller did that!!

  • Great to see this.... real and honest music... thanks

  • I agree, tommy Duncan is the epitome of western swing singers, polished, slick and perfect lyrical timing. swing music was very sofisticated, and not easy to pla yor sing, they justmade it seem that way, a true master.

  • Tommy Duncan was one of the best country/western swing singers of all time.

  • He made Bob Wills very famous. I actually have an uncle (my dads brother) named Tommy Duncan.

  • So this is the voice I heard so much as a kid and couldn't remember the name. I sure will now. He was wonderful. Five hundred stars. *

  • Tommy Duncan is my favourite all time male singer. I only thought I could sing before I started playing western swing, now thanks to endless hours of listening to Tommy I really can sing. It is extraordinary music, slick & sophisticated, unlike most peoples impression of country music today.

I's put Tommy up against Frank Sinatra any day & any of the guitarists would put the smug Jazz guitarists on notice.

  • you're right. tommy duncan was one of the best singers ever.he never got the credit he deserved. it saddens me that he has almost been forgotten. but western swing will never die, keep playing!!

  • Yep, I always say Duncan was the Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra of country (similar to Daffan...of course he's singing his song here :) ). A lot of country singing borrowed from the vocal jazz/pop singers of that era. Sons of the pioneers being one of them. They were basically vocal jazz (also borrowing here & there from barbershop and pop/standars), with a western-flavored backing.

  • A record came out awhile back - Bob Wills & Tommy Duncan - "Together again". It's great.

  • I would love to hear "The Southern Belles" with Nelda (Sunny Bingo) & Teena Fairchild(Bingo?) do thier act. I understand they were regulars on the Town Hall Party in the 50s and I would really love to hear any performance they might have done! Sunny is the greatest Yodeler and bass player! She also is a very talented song writer and I remember her telling me she was a friend with Merle Travis who helped her sell her songs in Nashville. Her most famous was 20 Flight Rock. Thanks Peace&Love2008

  • To give you a little more information on "The Southern Belles". Teena is my mother, and she is now living in Ashton, Idaho. Aunt Nelda is in Seattle, Washington. Mother also wrote songs. I would really be interested in anyone who may have any of their performances on Town Hall Party. At 81 and 80, both of them can still harmonize beautifully.

    Thanks, Lynda Trawick 2009

  • Check out that double neck guitar Joe Maphis plays, with his name inlaid on the fretboard. Per wikipedia, "He was known for his use of a double-neck Mosrite guitar, specially built for him by Semie Moseley, which was a boon to Moseley's fledgling career as a guitar builder. "

  • When I listen to Tommy Duncan sing I hear where he would have influenced Merle Haggard as much if not more than Lefty Frizzel.

  • Woo hoo!!

    Piano Red covered this one!

  • Doe the announcer remind anyone else of the character Maurice Minnifield in the 80' show Northern Exposure? Seriously.

  • reminds me of Tex Ritter, who is Maurice Minnifield, never watched the 80's tv shows cause most stunk...

  • that is tex ritter

  • Floyd Tillman was a cowriter of this song and had a great and very popular rendition!

  • I Want to Thank You for Keeping My Great Uncle

Tommy Duncan's Memory alive. I Thank You.

  • @IrvFerguson Don't be fooled this guy is not related to Tommy. My Grandpa is Glynn, Tommy's brother, and he has confirmed this man is a iar

  • I would like to hear "Faded Love". Didn't Mr. Duncan sing that, too? There is a real old one that I thought he sang on, but not sure: "The Rose and The Convict". My grandfather used to play and sing that at West Texas dances. Anyway, I am a fan through my father and grandfather.

  • tommy duncan left the bob wills band shortly before faded love came out, rusty mcdonald actually sang on the record. but all almost all those songs bob wills did before 1948 feature tommy duncan on the vocals

  • I only learned of Tommy a few years ago. I really like him. Thanks very much for putting up this video.

  • heh, I love 1:26 :P

  • tommy duncan is one of the best singers of all time, its sad he's not recognized as much as he deserved to be. we lost him far too soon

  • I love Tommy Duncan. People I'm begging you: Please post some Bob Wills videos with Tommy on Vocal!! I know there are some out there. Tommy is fabulous here, but he does seem a little different without the King of Western Swing. Love it!

  • Hi Thanks for the kind comments about Tommy. He was my uncle and I'm in the process of writing a book about him.

  • For what it's worth, he was a favorite of mine. I look forward to the book.

  • I joined YouTube just so I could comment on this. Thanks for posting this video, please post more if you have them. Tommy's never gotten the recognition he deserves or enough credit for his contribution to the development of Western Swing. When is the book coming out? I can't wait to read it!

  • Tommy at his best awesome video

  • Thanks for the kind comments about Tommy. He was my uncle and I'm in the process of writing a book about him.

  • My friend's older brother Tommy Duncan, "The Hillbilly Bing Crosby"

  • you mean glynn duncan?
