i dont get why people laugh during this. i see the humor. but i find it more poetic and beautiful than humorous. its the same as regina spektor or lilly allen. thats just my lil ole opinion
Yeah, I like this version the best out of all the ones I've heard... The album version is awesome in an extremely 80's sounding way and the randy newman songbook version is good and chill, but this one is oh so awesome and perfect!
@UnseenCrayon Shut the fuck up. I don't give a fuck. Stop whoring for votes. I came from Cracked but Im downing your comment. You dont need to fucking do that. Your making everybody hate cracked.
What would you think if Mexicans gave Randy death threats for what he said?
That's what's going on in Israel - a Musican named Shlomi Shaban translated the song to Hebrew and changed the word Mexican to Druze for geographical reasons and for satirical reasons. The Druzes appearantly don't have a sense of Satire and don't understand that Shlomi is on their side so they send him death threats even after he appologized to their leader. What would you think if that happened to Randy Newman?
@atomashin So what's your point, that all Druzes are evil and all Mexicans are cool? How do you know he never received death threats from Mexicans? Especially Mexican midgets!
@badmuthahubbard I'm not claiming that all Druzes are Evil but if you knew the magnitude of the incidence in Israel then you'd understand why it was important for me to post that.
And I really hope he didn't get death threats from Mexican midgets, you can't fight a luchador and stay alive that's for sure :)
the songs sounds like he has really experienced it - -the springsteen insult is just so explicit - -but anyway, such a minimovie of a song can only come from the one - -randy newman,-- he is simply funny and real
Great performance, though the studioversion features a brillant E-Street Band parody!!
Don´t miss the other 2 clips of that concert, "Christmas in Capetown" and the best version of "Sail Away" ever, so restraint, so felt!
What an amazing songwriter (and pianist, by the way)! Constantly good, bittersweet and unsentimental, though very emotional,- he is the "Stanley Kubrick of Rock" to me!
Next time I deliver to these rich pompous mother fuckers that gave me a 2 dollar tip... while they have a LNA there, an Au pair and a nanny?
Ima say... Hey your house reminds me of that randy newman song "my life is good" I hope he gets that im calling him a dick... but thinks i dont realize it. :D
Wow, this man is a genius. Listen to a few of his songs like short people or You've got a friend in me, really listen them. The music moves you. It form his soul, it's amazing to see, it really is. It's funny, I didn't even know his name before today, I was looking up the toy story sound track, lol, but I have to say, I'm a new fan. Bravo Mr. Newman, Bravo.
Yes,I think the character in the song is saying " Im alright jack, screw you" You know.like showbiz types with too much money and to little understanding of real life. but i wouldnt 2nd guess Randy Newman+i stand to be corrected if wrong! I often get confused with satire and irony.
I got it ready, but I still need your E-Maild address. It won't let me send it over youtube. Go to my channel and post it there so I can send the song to you, I also need to know if you will play the song on an Ipod so I can convert it to the correct encoding.
What a commentary - and the ending on the keys harmonically speaking, is why this man is so outstanding - in addition to everything else about his style especially his unique sense of humor.
One of the greatest songs ever written and performed. Hilarious. This song encapsulates the gratuitous wealth and the arrogance of the wealthy that is L.A. Build the walls higher in your gated communities.
His few words can cut straight to the heart of that self-absorption. Try his song: "Something To Sing About". He just manages to find smugness and writes about it. Perhaps he sees it everywhere. Perhaps it is everywhere.
I've been a Randy Newman fan for more than 30 years. His songs have such range. From love songs to the socio-political satire and commentary for which he is most cherised. For sheer looniness, one of my favorites is 'Party at my House' (from Trouble in Paradise?). The lines "Hey Bobbie! Get the rope!" send me into peals of laughter. Who else would write that? Who else would even dare/think to put that in a song?
That song, and the party it describes, happen in middle America every weekend. The fact that he can write such a song is what makes Newman such a valuable songwriter/observer.
Right, the fuuk, ON! Every tune on "I Love LA" is great, without exception. Him, Paul Simon, and Warren Zevon (rip) were/are the smartest song-writers of their (my) generation.

Don't let the liberl twits (like the teacher) see/hear this. They will try to end the world as we know it!!!! See they don't know how to have fun, like the REST of the world
I have to agree with those who say that this is probably Randy's best song ever. Every single nuance of this lyric is perfectly judged, each target is struck squarely in the centre and the overall impact is devastating. It's a superlatively concise, acutely observed satire which is set to a brilliant piano score and performed with an authority which only Randy can achieve.
