  • great tutorial

  • I am new in photography. and i like this video. Because there have lots of necessary things to learn about photography. Thank you for sharing your good ideas .

  • you can also put a layer or two of greaseproof paper to soften light

it's cheap and safe, and it's used even in tv sets!

  • i am confused about the lighting. What exactly are you using in this video? I want to buy the same exact Light bulbs and Lamp.

  • Great video, as with most thing photography, there is loads of ways to do the same thing. You could use a 18% grey card to pre-configure white balance to ensure the white background is pure white.

Also spot meter on the tea pot and use exposure lock when you have everything perfect. Just a suggestion

  • What is the best course of action:

Take a photo of a light object with a white background.

    or

Take a photo of a light object against a dark background and edit the dark background into white with editing software.

In case of the latter, which software do you guys recommend?

  • @soufiane37 Take on a white background and use Photoshop to edit.

  • @2006kcl What poster board?

  • I have to say - this is one of the most informative and well explained videos I have seen! You go into just enough detail and it's a really helpful video :) Thanks!

  • can i just use 1 or 2 soft boxes instead of the table top lamp?

  • hi,

Thanks for the tips. I just want to find out, what was the setting of the camera in the first picture? and it became better at the second picture because of the exposure? would you be able to tell me please what changes he did at the settings of his camera? thanks a lot.

  • @nelog1967 The answer is in the video you use exposure compensation to alter the exposure.

  • Hey Gavin,

Um just a quick question, how many mm is you lens that your using in this video?

  • @0BoxHead0 You won't find Gavin here he is at his own channel PhotoGavin the lens he uses most is 24 x 105

  • Ciufecca il foglio nero riflette la luce, l'ha scontornata per ottenere il nero di sfondo non è lo scatto.

  • sweet music lol

  • How can a 105W lightbulb emit 500W of light?

  • @localbkk By being energy efficient uses less energy to produce light than a conventional bulb.

  • @localbkk

exactly! that is kinda misleading from a technical standpoint!

  • there is no way a 105W light renders a 500W power. that's bullshit!!

  • @SoL2Squiz He is only watts as a reference of light output, but watts only indicates energy consumption. What he should say is that a low-watt bulb (like compact fluorescent) has the same amount of light output as a 500w incandescent bulb (energy hogs).

  • @jessi330 ... You must search for 5000K or 5500K fluorescent light bulbs. They will provide a natural daylight color‎ and are often used in photography to create an even light‎. The color temperature of the 5000K light bulb will be printed on the ‎package and also they usually have key words like daylight, cold white, ‎cool, cool white.‎

  • thank you, i finally can calm down and start taking good pics. thank you.

  • great

  • this really makes me understand many questions...........thanks!

  • this really makes me understand many things.........thanks!

  • Hi!

I really liked your video and it helped me a lot. I wanted to ask what peper do you use? Is it a normal paper or is there something diffrent?

    Hope to hear you soon,

    Jon

  • @koakoakoaa You use just any white paper.

  • this video was a total waste because you never even showed the final product - the photos that are the result from all this hard work. it's like saying we are going to bake an apple pie and when it's baked, you say goodbye. ridiculous.

  • @scir91 : are you blind? watch it again brother...

  • hi! really cool video! where can i find such big lightbulbs? i just found 23W ones... equivalent to 120 W lights... and by the way, any chance to get the title of the song? i love it.. :D

    thank you!

  • @sharkyigor If you are in the EU we can supply them 23w is really only equivalent to 90w.

  • @smickphoto how much are they? yes i am in italy but i am worried that the overall cost including shipment will be too high.. what kind of connector do they have? and, the title of the song? lol.. :D

  • @sharkyigor If you go onto the website and log in then the shipping charges will show in the shopping cart it is best to ask question by email. They have UK plugs but we can supply continental adaptors if asked for at time of ordering.

  • Hi, I'm curious if you skipped any steps when you showed the final picture with the black background. The picture came out perfect with the pitch black background. I usually don't have that type of luck with black paper, you can see the lights reflecting off it. Even in your video, I can see the lights reflecting off that black paper especially where the paper curves. So how did it come out pitch black? Is it because of the aperture and iso setting you did at the beginning?

  • @allabouttoys It is about exposure use a non reflective background and have the subject as far away as you can from the background and carefully position the lights to avoid reflections.

  • Gr8 ,, ThanQ

  • ratings should be enabled, I want to give thumbs UP!

  • this so usefull, thanks alot for the video.

  • شكرا لك على هذ الدروس المفيدة للجميع ولو أنني لا أتقن الإنجليزية كثيرا

  • I am an outdoor photographer, so lighting indoors has always been a bit of a mystery for me. Thank you so much for this tutorial. It really simplified the process a great deal for me.

  • nice miusic

  • do you dance salsa as well mr gavin?

  • how did you do that menu thing at the end?

  • nice tutorial! thanks!

  • Thank you Gavin, for simplifying the otherwise very difficult task of product photography ....

  • GREAT VIDEO.....CLEARLY UNDERSTOOD :):)

  • Your bulbs stick out past the front of the reflector and you lose control of the light so it falls all over everything. They ought to be inside the reflector so you can use the umbra and penumbra to greater effect.

  • @beyondguitars We have bulbs that fit within the reflector but the large bulbs do stick out and are suitable for all general applications as they are designed to give light to the whole scene to fall over everything and not control the light into a specific area of the scene. 50w bulbs fit within the reflector for more advanced setups.

  • @smickphoto

Why you are not using or recommending Manual Mode instead of Aperture Priority Mode. And do you shoot products or food in RAW or Jpeg (or Tiff etc)?

  • @junaid20i This is so that you can set the aperture to give you maximum depth of field, I always shoot in raw but jpeg is also fine. Mick

  • @helloimshepherd

    he uses Canon 40D....

  • this is a great video!

  • great tutorial, one of the best out here on youtube! cant wait to see the rest!

  • Hi Gavin, thats another great video. What light metering mode do you use for both backgrounds? Is spot metering mode good decision? Thanks.

  • nice vid..

anyway what paper are you using for the background?

  • nice vid..

anyway what paper are you using for the background?

  • nice one thanx

  • Gavin is fantastic. He makes me feel like I can achieve whatever I try. :D

  • iv just braught a cube box myself but i cant aford the 500W light kit so would i get away with using a standerd bed side table lighting of 40W LOL i know it might sound funny but i though id ask for your opion on it thanks.

  • Fantastic explanations Gavin.

When will the Light Cube video be available ??

  • Thanks I am glad i commented I couldnt find your video again and then saw your reply phew!

  • Really nice vid Gavin. Wish id seen it last week before i spent a few hrs taking bad photos. Any tips for taking pictures of small objects (silver jewellery) Thx

  • For things like jewellery I'd recommend using a lighing cube. The cube gives a softer light which gives a lot less shine.
