rickson is the best truly 460 wins 0 lose that record is incredible better then any fighter i have seen and that aint all bjj he also did aikido and jut jitsu and he was great at aikido he is the best and he was the one who thought his brother and the legend goes on
from what ive heard, rolls was the best out of all the gracies and when rickson was around 20ish rolls was the only one at the gym who could tap him out. The rest of the gracie family said that he was on a completely different level than them.
Lengendary! Great video. Check out the Passion for MMA - documentaries show today's fighters & all their hard work & dedication. Keep up the good work and all best!
i didnt see no tap from "pedro sauer". i didnt see no subission either. the crowd just starts clapping and the two fighters just stop fighting. why did the crowd clap? the fight wasnt over. i'm not sure this is the real pedro sauer either.
@judgerofwars Regardless of who it is (and it looks like Pedro Sauer) it's a gi choke that finishes the match while Rickson is setting up 3 other techniques on the back burner.
@judgerofwars That's definitely Pedro Sauer and you're missing the point. It was a beautiful relaxed roll from both of them. Watch at :38 as Master Sauer takes the time to scratch an itch on his left shin with his right foot. These are two guys so in their element and at such a level that the average jiu-jitsu practitioner can't even comprehend what he's watching.
This is bullshit man. I can't believe these assholes talking while he is. Rickson is my equivalent to a living god, and I would be beyond words if I was in his presence.
First off Rogers name isn't Roger Gracie. His dad is not a Gracie, but his mother is. Second comparing their skills is impossible. Rickson is in his late 50s while Roger is in his 20s, and I still think Rickson could take him. They are the two best BJJ artists in the world right now. If I had to put my money on one it's Rickson.
This was '97 in SLC, UT. That's me in the front row. An amazing night, Rickson rolled with one guy using no hands, and triangled him in 20 sec, then he subbed me and almost everyone else in the room. Priceless experience.
This was '97 in SLC, UT. That's me in the front row. An amazing night, Rickson rolled with one guy using no hands, and triangled him in 20 sec, then he subbed me and almost everyone else in the room. Priceless experience.
Why compare Roger to Rickson? One is 20 to 25 years older. Are you going to continue to compare him to the current generation when he's 90? He has passed the torch. He was hands down the best grappler of his time but the body eventually deteriorates.
Roger and Rickson are family. Let's not pit them against each other, that's rather low... I wouldn't mind watching them spar or flow drill for a bit, though. Would be very educational, I think.
Rickson even at his age is still the best sport BJJer, even where Roger is concerned. Go and read Fihlos recent interview about training with Rickson. I was just with Rickson this week and trust me, he is still amazing.
Wow. This is the only time I've ever seen Pedro get tapped out. This is when Pedro had has black belt, I think (can't really tell from the video). This is such a high level of jui-jitsu that it doesn't make sense to even try to measure it.
I went to a Rickson seminar in March 09 in Tenn, Sauer was there and Rickson made everyone there including Pedro look like amatuers, it was impressive
Learn to master taking the back all the great ones do that Royler Rickson, Leo Vieira, Marcelo Garcia, Roger Gracie,Fernando "Terere" Augusto. If you want to see how to take the back check out several of Terere fights, nobody takes your back better than this guy! Check out how he takes Marcelo Garcia's back and then taps him for the World Championship in 2003 or 2004 can't remember which one, check out how he takes Roger Gracie's back and almost gets the tap, Roger was just too strong.
this' way silly, why talking about family against family, doing the same thing and it ain't gonna be much fun and remember Jiujitsu isn't base on speed or strength, it's base on timing and leverage
I have the pleasure of being one of Master Sauer's students and train with him in Maryland. Truly an amazing man. Great post.... we need to see more of these.
What always scares me about watching Rickson roll is that, no matter who it is, he makes them look like a white belt. I would love to see him roll against B.J. Penn or Roger Gracie. That would be a trip.
People can say what they want, but for me, this video proves that Rickson's the man. Period.
no doubt he is a great grappler by the accounts of guys like saulo and galvao whove trained with him,hes never proven himself though as Im sure those sessions werent full intensity.Likewise with pedro who was never a champ anyway but a great coach.
In 2007, Paulo Filho trained with Rickson for a while. He said that no one did to him what Rickson did. And that his technical knowledge is 2nd to none. For Rickson to be able to handle a modern blackbelt like Filho is impressive.
I agree. Age might very well be a factor in such a match. However, might it not go either way? Age diminishes speed and strength, but enhances experience. I'd still love to see it, if only for the sheer beauty of technique on display.
@agentmma Thumbs up to that. Roger is considered the "best in the family" out of the ones that actually compete. Rickson hasn't competed for years because he has nothing left to gain from it. People think this competitor or that one is the best only because they've happened to see them win. Rickson has 20-30 years of technique on all the guys actively competing right now. His jiu jitsu is perfect.
I think we CAN compare him to rickson.....I mean Roger's BJJ is unreal....in terms of technical ability it's gonna be hard to find out unless they spar or there's an extensive comparison. In a match against each other, both men are almost unsubmittable, especially in gi, and Roger is much larger than Rickson. I don't know if Rickson will have any advantage in skill....probably, but not a whole lot more then a monster like Roger.
@agentmma you cant compare a lad with 8 world titles against the best and several adcc ownages against rickson who grappled at a time when nobody was great,(1987 ws his last match)didnt condition or strength train and far less people trained??Rickson is more of a legend than proven, people say he whups elite guys several years ago but I guarantee no young world champ black belt is going to disrespect rickson by going 100%
@agentmma roger won much more championships then rickson. And theres another thing that many people forget: when rickson was at his best, jiu jitsu wasnt that famous around the world. When roger started competing, jiu jitsu was much more spread around the world, and there were much more tough guys to fight with him
Saulo Ribeiro in his recent book Jiu Jitsu University said that Rickson made him tap, as well as everyone else that was in the gym, the last time they trained together. Saulo shows the armbar setup that Rickson used in the book.
Roger is awesome and def. the best competing today but Rickson is still on another level.
As far as championships... Rickson won the most prestigious competitions of his era in BJJ. When he was competing the Mundials did not exist. There weren't any No-Gi World Championships or ADCC.
@agentmma...but BJJ didn't have nearly as deep a talent pool as it does today. Roger's competition > Rickson's competition. Respect to Rickson but its just silly to think that a 54 year old Rickson would get the better of Roger.

@UnworthyBaldHead it is actually not silly - dont let age fool you - Pedro Sauer is the same way - there whole lives have been Jiu Jitsu - at a recent seminar ( Rickson Gracie ) Rickson had all the Blackbelts place him in an armbar from guard and not one could even budge him let alone tap him - Not one - the man is a force - the age he is at now doesnt make the least bit of difference -
@Mortido roger is the top dog, but I bet we cant get the old man... I was training with one of rickson's black belt in rio and he told me that he cant get the old man, rickson is a really slick guy even at his age
