I don't know why so many people complain about how MTV degenerated over the years. Clearly the internet has made such a concept completely irrelevant. Why would anyone sit around watching MTV in the hope of viewing some music video when they can watch it on the internet over and over. In This Clip, From 3:17 To 7:15, It Was The 6th Music Video Did Played On MTV, When It Was Launched On Early Saturday Morning, August 1, 1981, And It Was This Cliff Richard 1979 Music Video, "We Don't Talk Anymore."
In This Clip, From 0:12 To 3:17, It Was The 5th Music Video Did Played On MTV, When It Was Launched On Early Saturday Morning, August 1, 1981, And It Was This Ph.D. 1981 Music Video, "Little Susie's On The Up."
I'm sure there are some young watchers of these videos rolling their eyes reading the posts from us older folks when we reminisce about the good ole days but I have to add one more. Sitting in front of the tv at my best friends house, watching the long mission control countdown, watching the rocket blast off and knowing we were witnessing history. Simple, straightforward broadcasting at it's finest. Gives me chills just thinking about it. RIP MTV.
excellent we need the mtv retro channel that shows all the original mtv footage including the commercialslittle suzis on the up was later covered by tesla and called little suzi...
@RikaRulez Only someone can invent a time device to go back 30 years to show what has happened to MTV in the 21st Century. That would alternate history of MTV no doubt as well as the music, showing the producers the year it was launched of what it'll be like in 2011. I could see their reaction and they'll make changes to either stop or prevent it from happening such as not producing and airing reality shows such as Jersey Shore. Only if we can invent such a device.
@RVDMISSISSAUGAKID: I grew up in Hammond, Indiana, and the nearest "big city" was Chicago, but I read somewhere once that whether you had MTV when it debuted depended solely on whether or not your local cable operator was willing to carry MTV. Fortunately for me, United Cable didn't mind having MTV, but other cable operators weren't as liberal as United Cable
@Rumpo60: Yeah I remember all this well. As a 9 year old, I begged to stay up late to catch MTV the night it started (thanks Joe!) & my stepfather stayed up with me. My mom always found it funny that I still can remember MTV was on channel 10 on united cable in my hometown of Hammond, Indiana, that it replaced a local farm reports channel, but have trouble remembering my baby brother's birthday
@oldteenagegirl Did MTV start out only being available in the major cities, NYC, LA, Chcago, etc?? This 80's New Wave music really gives 80's music a good, good name.
i remember watchin all these like it was yesterday on the dial cable box ch31 i think in so. cal !!!!!!!! i love it !!!!! i was 8yrs old ! man great time !!!!!
@dalekenbuck i just mean in the first few seasons of the real world, the people were controversial, and grouping ppl together had never been seen like that before. it also gave alot of insight into what alot of kids in that generation were going through. best example?
@equilibrium0994 Actually when a time machine is eventually invented, I am going to go back in time and assassinate The Real World to save the planet from reality TV and the downfall of MTV.
James Honeyman Scott and Pete Farndon, a supreme waste of talents. Both dead, Scott in less than a year, Farndon in less than two, after this video. Drugs suck.
I'm from Mexico, and MTV Latinamerica is CRAP too these days. When the channel started (1994) they played good music and very good shows too, like Conexión with Ruth Infarinato, Chico Migraña, Vacalactica, and very well done MTV promos. Why is that MTV sucks now? What is the reason? Not only in the US, but in other countries too...
@krowy86 I agree with U, mexican friend I'm from Peru and I see MTV in 1989, pero no el canal sino un programa para latinoamerica conducido por Desy Fuentes, luego con el cable lo disfrute desde el 96 y en los 2000 comenzó a cambiar y a programar pura musk d negros y la porqueria de realitys q trasmiten hoy, la vdd no se xq el cambio, era lo maximo en los 90s staban Ruth, Alejandro, recuerdo a un mexicano q tenia un show buenismo, q pena q MTV se haya ido a la mierda.
The videos crack me up, but at the same time, this is when MTV was it's best. Before it got too big, and commercialized.
I swear, the roots of any network are the bets times in it's history.
I just look at channels like, MTV, Sci-Fi (now SyFy), VH1 and GSN. I was around for all of those stations being launch, and they were all amazing at first and now they all suck balls.
I'd say MTV got really good in '83. The songs and videos needed a little polishing up during the early '81 most of '82 years. I won't complain and I won't fret though coz all this is more highly appreciated than the crap I'm forced to listen to when riding with friends!
Interesting to compare the first two songs on this clip. Ph.D.'s "Little Susie's On The Up" takes full advantage of what can be done with a music video, including fast-paced editing, quirky humor, and dynamic camera angles. Cliff Richard's "We Don't Talk Anymore", by contrast, does what promo videos had done for over a decade by then: A generic pretend live performance for insertion on a talk show. It's not bad, but looks stiff compared to Ph.D.
Cliff predated the Beatles as a big pop thing in the UK, but was less big Stateside. "We Don't Talk Anymore" was one of only three times he got a U.S. Top 10 hit. He has more Top 10 hits than anyone in the UK, including the Fabs.
I'm totally dumbfounded right now! I thought "little Suzi" was a Tesla song all these years, and now I stumble upon this!! I like the original by PHD better!!!!!!!
@Huskerking , they spelt it wrong. It should be "Little Suzi's On The Up". It never charted in the UK. But remember, there weren't many music videos in 1981, so MTV just played whatever they had.
"Little Suzie's On The Up"..........very odd video and song. I saw it for the first time 25 years after this recording, when VH1 Classic did their re-enactment on MTV's first 24 hours. I still find myself coming back to this song though. I really like PHD's other song, "I Wont Let You Down".
Heh, MTV was literally playing ANYTHING they could get their hands on in those early days. Some of these artists, like PHD, never even made a blip on U.S music charts or radio.
@SuperAdventures MTV played it all! The sucky and the very popular, which we always know there was some more than others. I've also heard of this Cliff Richard dude but his songs fail to ring a bell to me or several of his generation. I take it the man wasn't so big. This one and yes what you said, the PHD song...both strange!
Cliff Richards did this tune? He did "Devil Woman" which is one of my all time favorites. Been reading some posts in the next video and see this part has been blocked in some countries. It must be the Cliff Richard video since it's made and produced in the US.

RIP MTV.

i wish MTV was the same as before, now is only reality shows instead of music videos!! =(

RikaRulez 1 year ago 69
@RikaRulez Only someone can invent a time device to go back 30 years to show what has happened to MTV in the 21st Century. That would alternate history of MTV no doubt as well as the music, showing the producers the year it was launched of what it'll be like in 2011. I could see their reaction and they'll make changes to either stop or prevent it from happening such as not producing and airing reality shows such as Jersey Shore. Only if we can invent such a device.

@RikaRulez I agree. Read my earlier post.

Some Ideas were much better before they got MAXIMIZED. I guess this is what happens to anything that starts off worthwhile. I miss the early days.

@TheTonechaser: what was awesome was staying up and catching New Years Eve in all the time zones

@RVDMISSISSAUGAKID: I grew up in Hammond, Indiana, and the nearest "big city" was Chicago, but I read somewhere once that whether you had MTV when it debuted depended solely on whether or not your local cable operator was willing to carry MTV. Fortunately for me, United Cable didn't mind having MTV, but other cable operators weren't as liberal as United Cable
oldteenagegirl 1 year ago
@Rumpo60: Yeah I remember all this well. As a 9 year old, I begged to stay up late to catch MTV the night it started (thanks Joe!) & my stepfather stayed up with me. My mom always found it funny that I still can remember MTV was on channel 10 on united cable in my hometown of Hammond, Indiana, that it replaced a local farm reports channel, but have trouble remembering my baby brother's birthday
oldteenagegirl 1 year ago
@oldteenagegirl Did MTV start out only being available in the major cities, NYC, LA, Chcago, etc?? This 80's New Wave music really gives 80's music a good, good name.

@equilibrium0994 Actually The real world and Cops were the downfall of TV...They are the reason you are watching all reality TV Now.
dalekenbuck 1 year ago 34
@dalekenbuck i just mean in the first few seasons of the real world, the people were controversial, and grouping ppl together had never been seen like that before. it also gave alot of insight into what alot of kids in that generation were going through. best example?

I'm from Mexico, and MTV Latinamerica is CRAP too these days. When the channel started (1994) they played good music and very good shows too, like Conexión with Ruth Infarinato, Chico Migraña, Vacalactica, and very well done MTV promos. Why is that MTV sucks now? What is the reason? Not only in the US, but in other countries too...
krowy86 1 year ago
@krowy86 MTV Worldwide just sucks now! Not just in America.
jpx08 1 year ago 3
@krowy86 I agree with U, mexican friend I'm from Peru and I see MTV in 1989, pero no el canal sino un programa para latinoamerica conducido por Desy Fuentes, luego con el cable lo disfrute desde el 96 y en los 2000 comenzó a cambiar y a programar pura musk d negros y la porqueria de realitys q trasmiten hoy, la vdd no se xq el cambio, era lo maximo en los 90s staban Ruth, Alejandro, recuerdo a un mexicano q tenia un show buenismo, q pena q MTV se haya ido a la mierda.

I had no idea until just now that someone else did "Little Suzie's On The Up" before Tesla did it. I've always thought that it was a Tesla song.

That first song sounds like a reworking of Van Halen's Jump.

acutally, Jump was on Van Halen's "1984" album - so maybe Jump was a rework of PhD's song!!! lol.

Love that Cliff Richard song.

I won't complain and I won't fret though coz all this is more highly appreciated than the crap I'm forced to listen to when riding with friends!
imachildofthe80s8089 1 year ago
Interesting to compare the first two songs on this clip. Ph.D.'s "Little Susie's On The Up" takes full advantage of what can be done with a music video, including fast-paced editing, quirky humor, and dynamic camera angles. Cliff Richard's "We Don't Talk Anymore", by contrast, does what promo videos had done for over a decade by then: A generic pretend live performance for insertion on a talk show. It's not bad, but looks stiff compared to Ph.D.

I can't leave this channel man. Never heard Little Suzi before Tesla...wow! Somebody get Doc Brown on the phone...I'm goin' back!
catdaddy2006 1 year ago
LMAO Cliff Richard!!! I have no idea who he is or was but this video made me laugh !!!
callmeshort09 1 year ago
Cliff predated the Beatles as a big pop thing in the UK, but was less big Stateside. "We Don't Talk Anymore" was one of only three times he got a U.S. Top 10 hit. He has more Top 10 hits than anyone in the UK, including the Fabs.

I don't remember "Little Suzies on the Up"?
Huskerking 2 years ago
@Huskerking , they spelt it wrong. It should be "Little Suzi's On The Up". It never charted in the UK. But remember, there weren't many music videos in 1981, so MTV just played whatever they had.

R.E.O. SPEEDWAGON!
Is there a single band out there with a cooler name?
richardmaudsley77 2 years ago
"Little Suzie's On The Up"..........very odd video and song. I saw it for the first time 25 years after this recording, when VH1 Classic did their re-enactment on MTV's first 24 hours. I still find myself coming back to this song though. I really like PHD's other song, "I Wont Let You Down".
Heh, MTV was literally playing ANYTHING they could get their hands on in those early days. Some of these artists, like PHD, never even made a blip on U.S music charts or radio.
SuperAdventures 2 years ago 7
@SuperAdventures MTV played it all! The sucky and the very popular, which we always know there was some more than others. I've also heard of this Cliff Richard dude but his songs fail to ring a bell to me or several of his generation. I take it the man wasn't so big. This one and yes what you said, the PHD song...both strange!
imachildofthe80s8089 1 year ago
@imachildofthe80s8089 Cliff had a few top ten hits in America, but he was a lot bigger in the UK.

@lurch321 I heard he had a hit with Olivia Newton-John. And I think I heard girls kinda flocked to him like David Cassidy.
