  • Cliff Richards did this tune? He did "Devil Woman" which is one of my all time favorites. Been reading some posts in the next video and see this part has been blocked in some countries. It must be the Cliff Richard video since it's made and produced in the US.

  • okay I think Lucky Strike cigarettes paid for that Pretenders music vid LOL!

  • Christ even the 1990's version was cool, and they launched Beavis and Butthead in the 1990's.

  • I wasn't born till 84 but I can vaguely remember watching Mtv and it was a lot better than it is now :-(

  • how much better it was back then, sweet lost youth

  • im 16 iv been on this playlist for a bit now and i can honestly say that this MTV is WAY better then what we got today! why'd my generation have to be fucked up? -.-

  • @gilflip369 Only if there are far more young viewers like you around. MTV would still be MTV and no Jersey Shore and Teen Mom knowing the ratings would be so bad then.

  • Money ... fucks everything up.

  • cliff richard got some crazy dance moves

  • Holy fuck I'm gonna be late for the reospeedwagon concert.

  • in stereo yeaaaaa

  • go back to music mtv but dont be like fuse and play lady gaga takeovers every fucking day

  • What happened MTV? You used to care about the music, now your channel is pure crap. What happened to the music? The real music?

  • Lucky Strike in the Pretenders video lol wow. step in the "wayback" machine :)

  • no rap, no crap and no scrap..mtv music television in stereo.. I want my MTV!!!

  • Man...

  • the good ol days where a singing waitress was acceptable and customers would sing out special only because it was on the menu ......

  • Am I the only one to notice that Lucky Strike cigs are promoting this video???

  • @dalekenbuck is it true that m.t.v. only started out with about 30 videos and rotated them over and over until almost a year into the stations' career?

  • @306fatboy Why would bands make videos until there was a channel that played them? :-P

  • i want my, i want my, i want my MTV

  • This is why i watch the one and only mtv channel that plays videos 24/7!like good old mtv use to do

  • that black guy was the best

  • vsauce!

  • hmm, i didnt realize that Tesla covered Little Suzy.

  • @pruzman Me either... I thought Little Suzy was a Tesla original...

  • @normynoless no that was the orginal that played.

  • "SHIT! i knew i forgot something back in 81. i had tickets to that REO show."

i guarantee at least one person said that when they watched this lol

  • im seeing alot of people in the comments say that they got older and things are diffferent now them back when but im a teanager and im saying that this needs to go back to what it was

  • @THEJJISOM Me too. One student asked me if I like Jersey Shore and I said "no". I felt that MTV should've been handled by ppl who really know the spirit of music. MTV sucks Nowadays. =u =D

  • @SuperFlashDriver thank you what i think is that mtv2 was for all the reality shows but i guess not if any thing that should be what it is

  • @THEJJISOM Hm. But I don't watch that channel.

  • @SuperFlashDriver exactly thats what i mean they where going to make mtv2 for reality shows and continue with all music on the original but in stead they put all the reality shows on MTV and cast MTV2 into the shadows

  • @THEJJISOM That's horrible. = L

  • @SuperFlashDriver ya it really sucks

  • @THEJJISOM I [ *sigh* = I

  • I'm going to hook this up to my tv and when my parents walk in they'll be like O.O :O are we back in 81?

  • @alexnr951 That is a very funny and novelty idea. You should do it!.

  • @alexnr951 XD Your parents would be very surprised @ that. XD

  • MTV had to go to doing what they did.. they got replaced by music choice

  • I don't care if they have to play Friday by Rebecca Black.

I want the old MTV back...

Take all of those reality shows and move them over to MTV2. That's what it was made for.

  • FUCK JERSEY SHORE. BRING THIS BACK

  • iuse to want mtv to play music again but they'd only play the "hits" of today and honestly that music is shit

  • @JingleRants yeah but that "shit" we call music is still better then the crap they have on mtv now

  • Just wait, once they start regulating the internet, we'll be saying the same thing about 'how it used to be back then'.

  • Yay! The Pretenders!

  • There will always be something someone has to complain about or wish (back); why not accept that MTV has developed (whether backwards or forwards), and cherish the good era of it. Real World was different the first go round; they were exposing the position of AIDS, now (and for the years past) it shows the position of a growing problem with alcoholism in America. It is what it is. I grew up with MTV and greatly enjoyed watching these videos.. thanks for the good memories!

  • Dear MTV,

It's so funny that we don't watch anymore. (doooooo doo-doo dooooo)

  • not all music back then was good...

  • @hudooguru but back then it was innocent.

  • @TheEmerald92 what do you mean?

  • These videos are amazing. I'm 20 and proud that my parents taught me about what good music is! MTV should watch these videos to see where it all went wrong. At least I can watch VH1 Classic

  • remember the giant cable boxes, with their long ass cords, and the rows of big buttons? lol.

  • @hppiefrk ...and the remote control (the clicker) that would practically fall apart after the glue that held the number panel wore off. But it was ok tho, most of us had the corresponding digits memorized..

Oh, and what about the show Remote Control ? w/ Adam Sandler

  • On this day, the entire cast of Jersey Shore....hadn't even been born yet.

  • @TheLastBrainLeft It's too bad they WERE born. Yeah, I'm sure they were adorable little babies at the time, but who knew they would grow up to be in a totally SUCKASS tv show??

  • Think REO knew they were helping the very demon that would destroy their careers with that?

  • jeez I had no idea when Tesla did this it was a cover song lol

  • Cliff Richard looks like he is struggling to walk in the fog! That stuff must be like quicksand! A lot of people must have had mono tvs back in the day (we did). They keep touting how MTV is "in stereo".

  • Ha, product placement at 8.38.

  • "Little Suzi's On The Up" is one of my favorite video/songs from the first day of MTV.

  • @monsterbucket97 What's even worse...it's not called Music Television anymore...it's MTV...just initials with no meaning. :(

  • Comment removed

  • @LisaBellmore >it's MTV...just initials with no meaning

    You mean Empty V.

  • Cliff Richards!!! THE PRETENDERS! Once upon a time, MTV was ALL video. I admit that I RARELY watch MTV (I watch MTV 2 because of episodes of "Martin" and "In Living Color" that they show. Bring "Living Single" on and I'm in HEAVEN!"). God, I just ache when I think of the old days!

  • Just because we now got internet and internet has youtube to watch videos doesnt mean MTV has to completly kill off Music Videos. If MTV isnt going to show videos then they should change their name to RTV "reality tv".. MTV doesnt deserve the name they use now.

  • Thanks dude! I've got your samples on my Facebook page right now. Thanks for saving this stuff ... I'll owe you one soon!

    ;-)

  • The old MTV show and the videos they put on looked like a Public Access TV show.

  • @98bigbutt Yup, very rough production values during those first years. They got better pretty quickly though.

  • @monsterbucket97 There used to be "Music Television" underneath the logo. A few years ago, they removed it.

  • Thanks to Cliff Richard, overbites will never go out of style.

  • It is all about money today. Greed. G*R*E*E*D. It is one of the 'Seven Deadly Sins of Man'. Now look what's happening in Washington. Look what greed has done to us. They tried to get several bills through to solve the debt issue and none so far have gotten through. The aftermath of greed comes with severe consquences and that consquence is the 'fall of America'. No one listens to the common people anymore. Not corporate owners. Not the politicians. It's all about greed. Lord help us.

  • I loved how different forms of music were all treated equally. Iron Maiden, the Specials, Blondie, The Who, etc. Great stuff.

  • Can you belive Tesla covered this song "Little Suzi's on the up". WTF? How funny.

  • YOU'LL NEVER LOOK AT MUSIC THE SAME WAY AGAIN DAMN RIGHT THIS CRAP TODAY I WANNA LOOK AT MTV IN THE 80'S THANKS FOR UPLOAD TAKE ME BACK AT 17YRS OLD

  • @driffter1976

    Nostalgia overruns logic.

  • @myez - well, that explains the neonazi movement, but that's about it...

  • @HypnoToad72

People miss video tapes even though DVDs and BLDs are better. Memories are tied to certain things and we feel out of place when new versions of these things come along sometimes. Not sure how neonazism is associated with nostalgia.

  • @myez You're oversimplifying. I don't miss videotapes, or shitty cars, or tighty whities, or chicks wearing mom jeans. But I do miss good music, good by virtue of the fact that it was fresh and new, whereas nowadays pretty much everything has been done before. And aside from the Shore (which is entertaining by virtue of the personalities) the shit they put on MTV now is complete fucking shit, and it's sad that kids watch it. I mean come on, TWO shows about pregnant white trashy teenagers?

  • @mikper7

Other people do miss videotapes, "shitty" cars and stuff like that. There are better ways to listen to music and watch music videos right now. We miss MTV because of the memories, even though now we can pull up any music video we want, watch random ones and skip them if we like. Why do people still miss MTV with stuff like youtube? Nostalgia.

  • @myez Not my point. MTV is terrible now. Some things were better 25 - 30 years ago. A lot of things weren't.

  • @mikper7

I don't like MTV now, but saying it got worse isn't what we should be saying. It's what the kids and teenagers should be saying. We got older, the programming doesn't follow us, it tries to stay in the same place.

  • They even had concerts on there?! How freakin awesome!

  • @dooger94 And REO Speedwagon was running neck & neck with Styx to be the best band the kids in suburban America loved. Fancy that - I liked 'em both, too.

Yeah, I even saw the broadcast of the REO concert. Definitely remember the top Kevin wore, geometric stuff & all.

  • How can music be so damn good back then and be so damn bad today. Hip-hop and rap has ruined music forever. It will never recover.

  • @Digitalbumpin I have a theory on that. We have become lazy and have developed a disposable quick fix mentality. We want what pops, sounds good right this minute and we want it now. OK, that was good, now what's NEXT? I want what is next NOW. The internet and cable have bombarded our youth with too much instant gratification when it comes to music, video, and information. Corps have latched on and are eager to please to feed the bottom line. Talent will forever play second fiddle to $.

  • @Digitalbumpin Try to tell that to those who listen to it. To me, I think those who are white and especially who are over 30 who listen to rap/hip as their prime source of music seriously need to see a psychiatrist. I agree rap and hip hop has put music in the grave yard and alternative isn't much better, dual and terrible lyrics, lack of melody with too many remakes. Music died after the '80s when rap and alternative took over mainstream airways. And sad that it is still going after two decades

  • REO..one of my favorite concerts

  • Wow the first video, was that the orig. Jersey Shore or real pigs can't tell.

  • Thanks so much for posting these vids...these were the best times of my life. :)))

  • In This Clip, From 3:17 To 7:15, It Was The 6th Music Video Did Played On MTV, When It Was Launched On Early Saturday Morning, August 1, 1981, And It Was This Cliff Richard 1979 Music Video, "We Don't Talk Anymore."

  • In This Clip, From 0:12 To 3:17, It Was The 5th Music Video Did Played On MTV, When It Was Launched On Early Saturday Morning, August 1, 1981, And It Was This Ph.D. 1981 Music Video, "Little Susie's On The Up."

  • @radiodj1520 Later recorded by Tesla who made it an AOR hit in 1986.

  • In This Clip, From 0:00 To 0:10, It Was MTV's REO In Concert Video ID For Early Sunday Morning, August 9, 1981.

  • I'm sure there are some young watchers of these videos rolling their eyes reading the posts from us older folks when we reminisce about the good ole days but I have to add one more. Sitting in front of the tv at my best friends house, watching the long mission control countdown, watching the rocket blast off and knowing we were witnessing history. Simple, straightforward broadcasting at it's finest. Gives me chills just thinking about it. RIP MTV.

  • i wish MTV was the same as before, now is only reality shows instead of music videos!! =(

  • excellent we need the mtv retro channel that shows all the original mtv footage including the commercialslittle suzis on the up was later covered by tesla and called little suzi...

  • excellent we need the mtv retro channel that shows all the original mtv footage including the commercials.

  • Cliff Richard and that shirt make me feel so inferior as a man.

  • @toucansam3 Me too, and I'm a woman!!

  • @Suttutisquid I was thinking, it really is so funny that we don't talk anymore.

  • 80% of america sees this for the first time and the reaction is, "Oh that's what the M stands for."

  • I want my MTV... back.

  • @RikaRulez Only someone can invent a time device to go back 30 years to show what has happened to MTV in the 21st Century. That would alternate history of MTV no doubt as well as the music, showing the producers the year it was launched of what it'll be like in 2011. I could see their reaction and they'll make changes to either stop or prevent it from happening such as not producing and airing reality shows such as Jersey Shore. Only if we can invent such a device.

  • @RikaRulez I agree. Read my earlier post.

  • Cliff Richard looks here like an hybrid between Mick Jagger&Freddie Mercury, but harmless...

  • Little Suzie is my favorite song...by TESLA!

  • @TheSmithbelynda I had no idea until NOW it was a remake. Tesla did it better.

  • Some Ideas were much better before they got MAXIMIZED. I guess this is what happens to anything that starts off worthwhile. I miss the early days.

  • @TheTonechaser: what was awesome was staying up and catching New Years Eve in all the time zones

  • @RVDMISSISSAUGAKID: I grew up in Hammond, Indiana, and the nearest "big city" was Chicago, but I read somewhere once that whether you had MTV when it debuted depended solely on whether or not your local cable operator was willing to carry MTV. Fortunately for me, United Cable didn't mind having MTV, but other cable operators weren't as liberal as United Cable

  • @Rumpo60: Yeah I remember all this well. As a 9 year old, I begged to stay up late to catch MTV the night it started (thanks Joe!) & my stepfather stayed up with me. My mom always found it funny that I still can remember MTV was on channel 10 on united cable in my hometown of Hammond, Indiana, that it replaced a local farm reports channel, but have trouble remembering my baby brother's birthday

  • @oldteenagegirl Did MTV start out only being available in the major cities, NYC, LA, Chcago, etc?? This 80's New Wave music really gives 80's music a good, good name.

  • @RVDMISSISSAUGAKID I'm from Spartanburg SC, and remember that we had MTV on from the start in 1981.

  • Love the fact that 6 of the first 7 acts on MTV were British.

  • GOOD shit, man these were the days!

  • I'm familiar with the Tesla version and never knew it was a cover. This is cool.

  • Makes me feel young again... yet old at the same time lol

  • Best song in the first hour of MTV? Hands down "Brass In Pocket".

  • i remember watchin all these like it was yesterday on the dial cable box ch31 i think in so. cal !!!!!!!! i love it !!!!! i was 8yrs old ! man great time !!!!!

  • This more than History.

    This is a Nostalgic Orgasm!

  • Back then, Stereo was new and always been heard instead of saying HD today.

  • @equilibrium0994 Actually The real world and Cops were the downfall of TV...They are the reason you are watching all reality TV Now.

  • @dalekenbuck i just mean in the first few seasons of the real world, the people were controversial, and grouping ppl together had never been seen like that before. it also gave alot of insight into what alot of kids in that generation were going through. best example?

    PEDRO ZAMORA.

  • @dalekenbuck very much agreed sir

  • @dalekenbuck Remember earlier reality shows like That's Incredible & Real People?

  • @dalekenbuck,Actually you're 1000% correct my friend!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for showing this by the way.

  • @equilibrium0994 dude the real world was fucking lame.

  • @equilibrium0994 Actually when a time machine is eventually invented, I am going to go back in time and assassinate The Real World to save the planet from reality TV and the downfall of MTV.

  • Whyy thee fxxckk is it called music television if they show reality shows all the time. Shouldnt be called reality televion? Whatever >.<

  • @JayyyVee no because fox has a reality channel

  • James Honeyman Scott and Pete Farndon, a supreme waste of talents. Both dead, Scott in less than a year, Farndon in less than two, after this video. Drugs suck.

  • I'm from Mexico, and MTV Latinamerica is CRAP too these days. When the channel started (1994) they played good music and very good shows too, like Conexión with Ruth Infarinato, Chico Migraña, Vacalactica, and very well done MTV promos. Why is that MTV sucks now? What is the reason? Not only in the US, but in other countries too...

  • @krowy86 MTV Worldwide just sucks now! Not just in America.

  • @krowy86 I agree with U, mexican friend I'm from Peru and I see MTV in 1989, pero no el canal sino un programa para latinoamerica conducido por Desy Fuentes, luego con el cable lo disfrute desde el 96 y en los 2000 comenzó a cambiar y a programar pura musk d negros y la porqueria de realitys q trasmiten hoy, la vdd no se xq el cambio, era lo maximo en los 90s staban Ruth, Alejandro, recuerdo a un mexicano q tenia un show buenismo, q pena q MTV se haya ido a la mierda.

  • I had no idea until just now that someone else did "Little Suzie's On The Up" before Tesla did it. I've always thought that it was a Tesla song.

  • That first song sounds like a reworking of Van Halen's Jump.

  • @cochranexyz

acutally, Jump was on Van Halen's "1984" album - so maybe Jump was a rework of PhD's song!!! lol.

  • @TheMC1215 Gotcha.

  • BRING BACK THE VJ's! (video jockeys!) on digital tv 20-2 they have a music channel but its a bunch of rap bullshit. :P

  • Love that Cliff Richard song.

The videos crack me up, but at the same time, this is when MTV was it's best. Before it got too big, and commercialized.

I swear, the roots of any network are the bets times in it's history.

I just look at channels like, MTV, Sci-Fi (now SyFy), VH1 and GSN. I was around for all of those stations being launch, and they were all amazing at first and now they all suck balls.

  • In the intro I was sure he said "Mario Speed Wagon."

  • what the fuck happened to the good old days?????

  • I'd say MTV got really good in '83. The songs and videos needed a little polishing up during the early '81 most of '82 years. I won't complain and I won't fret though coz all this is more highly appreciated than the crap I'm forced to listen to when riding with friends!

  • Interesting to compare the first two songs on this clip. Ph.D.'s "Little Susie's On The Up" takes full advantage of what can be done with a music video, including fast-paced editing, quirky humor, and dynamic camera angles. Cliff Richard's "We Don't Talk Anymore", by contrast, does what promo videos had done for over a decade by then: A generic pretend live performance for insertion on a talk show. It's not bad, but looks stiff compared to Ph.D.

  • I can't leave this channel man. Never heard Little Suzi before Tesla...wow! Somebody get Doc Brown on the phone...I'm goin' back!

  • LMAO Cliff Richard!!! I have no idea who he is or was but this video made me laugh !!!

  • Cliff predated the Beatles as a big pop thing in the UK, but was less big Stateside. "We Don't Talk Anymore" was one of only three times he got a U.S. Top 10 hit. He has more Top 10 hits than anyone in the UK, including the Fabs.

  • @slokes1 strange

  • I'm totally dumbfounded right now! I thought "little Suzi" was a Tesla song all these years, and now I stumble upon this!! I like the original by PHD better!!!!!!!

  • Wow some one actually recorded this and posted to You Tube. Very cool!

  • I don't remember "Little Suzies on the Up"?

  • @Huskerking , they spelt it wrong. It should be "Little Suzi's On The Up". It never charted in the UK. But remember, there weren't many music videos in 1981, so MTV just played whatever they had.

  • R.E.O. SPEEDWAGON!

Is there a single band out there with a cooler name?

  • "Little Suzie's On The Up"..........very odd video and song. I saw it for the first time 25 years after this recording, when VH1 Classic did their re-enactment on MTV's first 24 hours. I still find myself coming back to this song though. I really like PHD's other song, "I Wont Let You Down".

Heh, MTV was literally playing ANYTHING they could get their hands on in those early days. Some of these artists, like PHD, never even made a blip on U.S music charts or radio.

  • @SuperAdventures MTV played it all! The sucky and the very popular, which we always know there was some more than others. I've also heard of this Cliff Richard dude but his songs fail to ring a bell to me or several of his generation. I take it the man wasn't so big. This one and yes what you said, the PHD song...both strange!

  • @imachildofthe80s8089 Cliff had a few top ten hits in America, but he was a lot bigger in the UK.

  • @lurch321 I heard he had a hit with Olivia Newton-John. And I think I heard girls kinda flocked to him like David Cassidy.

  • @SuperAdventures

I just found out that the band Tesla redid Little Susie On The Up and renamed it Little Susie.

  • Did they start "Little Susie's On The Up" on the wrong speed? Or is that just how the video was?
