I have a bearded dragon that is 10 years old and still going strong! They are great! I had a friend bring me a severely neglected beardie yesterday that has an abscess like in the video... except his is larger and a fistula was already open and wanting to drain. I removed a lot of semi liquid/solid infection and cleaned it up with betadine and put neosporine over the hole to keep it clean. Next step... probiotics.
@hcs626 - He was looked at by a professional... however something like this isnt cured by a ONE TIME vet visit. I had to take care of him after getting instructions by the person who seen him.
That poor little guy but he looks like he felt SO much better when you popped out the Abscess, than the one he looked like he was going to shed soon looks like a little Beardie Burrito
@thenumber1bleachfan - In this case, it started with a little infection that started from getting pricked by the spikes on a cockroach leg. After time it just kept getting worse and worse until it was noticeable (with the bump forming), and at that time, needed to be lanced and drained.
@IamMeUareYou - He passed away a couple months later from what I believe was old age as he was a few years old when I got him, and I had him for over a year. I have a video dedicated to him, he died on Memorial Day 2010.
It's great that you went through so much just to get him well again. Some horrible pet owners would just leave it until it got so serious there would be nothing to do about it. The world needs more people who take good care of their pets. ^^
wow thats a big blessing for him to recover! and what a beautiful beardie! i have one as well his name is Steve ^_^ good luck with your dragon! and im very happy the Abscess didnt come back
you did an awesome job. poor little beardie. we have two and i couldn't imagine that happening to one of them. they are like our adoptive kids. i have made many rushes to the vet. lol
hey i know this was a long time ago for you but i just wanted to say thaat, that beardie is toufge and has an owner that CARES! and i would love to know what the vet said?
@griffan456 - You want to know what the vet said as to what? How the procedure went? Why he died? Why he got the abscess? And thank you... I do care about my reptiles :)
@UpstateNYPets I realize this was over a year ago for you but I was curious about why the vet didn't recommend stitches after you were able to successfully evacuate the abscess. Did you have to keep him a vegetarian while he was healing to keep crickets or worms from bothering the wound? Granted, I figure you would have kept the quarters pristine now matter what but I'd be paranoid if a wound was left open on one of my dragons. I'm curious, not critical.
@RebelMuse - We didnt give him stitches because the wound wasnt bleeding or pussing. Without stitches we were able to use a Q-tip to clean the wound with betadine and antibiotics. With stitches, the cleaning inside the wound would not have been possible. His diet remained the same all throughout his ordeal. Worms, crickets, veggies, etc never bothered him. As you said, I kept his space very clean, and did not allow crickets to hang out and crawl all over him inside his tank. Thanks for viewing.
@redheaddavey - Fuck people like you who leave stupid ass comments on videos that mean a lot to people. If you don't like the damn song MUTE YOUR SPEAKERS or MOVE ON, you twit.
@UpstateNYPets Congrats on acting like a Captain-Save-A-Ho online. You've clearly impressed all these other Internet weirdos that are probably only here to watch the abscess get popped with your Online Heroism and snapwhit defenses of this poor reptile and this unbelievably annoying song. Bravo. I bow to your superior sense of Internet brotherhood.
You are such an awsome pet owner. Many people would have given the animal away and given up on the trouble of caring for them. My poor kittie escaped one time and gotten an abcess around his eye, im not sure what caused it. Anyways that kittie's abcessed was very bad. His eye was nearly swollen shut. I got him all cleaned up, and he is now a fat and happy kitty who loves sitting on my keyboard.
This reminds me more of an infected cyst (formed over an ingrown scale/other foreign object that got wedged into his skin, possibly when he was younger) than an abscess. The difference is subtle - but in the case of a cyst the infection will return over and over until the effected area of flesh is removed. You're just lucky that the lancing site was large enough that trying to "empty" it happened to pop the cyst right out! My hubby had one on his rear end, and it took surgery to get rid of it!
@UpstateNYPets aaaaa so sorry to hear that...did you get a new one..becose i see you are a true lover od reptiles and deserwe them...not lika so many people here on youtube...who only see them as toys especialy beardies, becose they are calm and not showing agreesinon even if you do something to them they dont like....so pople think they can do anything to them...so sad...if they try to do some of those things they film and put here to like cameleon he would byte their had of :) wish all luck
@issane288 - I do have a new one, actually I have 2 beardies now (yes I've been slacking on videos lately) and they are just as spoiled as the one before them :) I agree that many people don't deserve to keep reptiles, they think of them as toys and only like them because of the "coolness factor". Many are not cared for properly because of that.
I have a vet appointment in the morning to take care of an abscess on the face of one of my chinese water dragons. hopefully with some love and care he'll heal just as nicely. :]
Love this video !! Great job caring for the beardie! Sorry he is gone but he seemed like a happy little guy and that's all that matters! My beardie i have was rescued and he almost lost his eye I really wish I took videos and pictures because it is quite amazing! My guys eye works perfectly only has minor scaring now 2 years later!
@TheBDArizona - It popped out so easy that I dont think it bothered him too much. He didn't flinch and sat their very patiently for me. As you can see, he even sat through it allowing me to take the pictures.
@bob474100 - He may have felt some pain, but he sat there very still without flinching, and even sat there patiently while I took photos of the process.
ps sorry he passed...must have been hard for u ....where r u in upstate ny? we are just outside albany ny...would be great to know a caring and experienced beardie owner such as urself, btw the music was fine and was a godd distraction in a way to keep me focused on what was important and needed to be done, best of luck always...
@payitforwardmomma - I recently moved out of NY, but I was east of Syracuse, about 2 hours away from Albany. Thank you for the kind words, they are appreciated.
Thanks for sharing. Sometimes it seems scary but it is obvious how much you care and love him, btw so adorable he is...., and you did a great job and he was a trooper I am sure! When we had trouble we were able to find a Herp vet and got good advice from bd.org,so our beardie girl did well, tlc and cleanliness is a big part of their care, they are trlly awesome creatures ...u r an great and caring beardie owner! Thanks again... :0)
@thetweenteam - Find a local reptile rescue or locally owned exotic pet store (not stores like petsmart, petco, etc)... and ask them to refer you to someone. You can also call around to your local vets and ask questions to find out if they are experienced with reptiles and ask how many come in there regularly.

Using the same song as 99% of the rest of uploaders ruins this video. Because of that alone, I can't bear to watch the entire clip even though it looks good!
@vtgamehendge - It went unnoticed for a little while... But when it started rapidly growing and getting bigger and bigger is when I noticed it and actually DID something about it. Can't say that for half of pet (reptile) owners out there.
@UpstateNYPets HA! I don't even know how my comment ended up on this vid. I was trying to post that comment on a video of some dude who had a huge abscess in his arm and they drained about a half gallon of fluid and puss. But I love bearded dragons. One of my friends had one when we were in college. His name was Cheeba.
I am so sorry this little guy passed away. I love to watch dermatology videos and figured that the reason for the fast re-growth was because there was a sac or something else. How old was he? He looked very happy, healthy and well taken care of. I do love it when they get mad and puff out like that. Too funny. Nature at it's best! Once again, I'm sorry for your loss.
Poor guy, he was very good about it. Is his coloring usual? they have one in my local pet store, the mascot she is more beige. Not the pretty white like yours.
Wow he is a cutie!! I enjoyed your video. Great work on your video diary, including the correct spelling of words. These days too many people can't spell. Congrats!! It's even a shame that I'm congratulating you on spelling our language.
@PvtRager - This wasn't something that my other reptiles could get. What we believe happened was when I fed him a hissing roach, one of the spikes from the leg penetrated his gums, and eventually led to this abscess. The infection slowly built up into that giant mass. The hole in the gum from the leg spike just kept collecting bacteria and infection was building while we knew nothing about it until the mass was formed. So you should be okay, no need to worry about this happening to your reptiles
@iluvcynder - It wasn't something that just could have been "removed" It was like having a big pimple or boil. It had to be LANCED and drained, which they did... it was up to me to keep it all clean and what not, under their supervision (which I had the whole time thank you very much). Hey, at least I'm not like half you scum bags out there who don't get ANY kind of vet or other expert care for their pets. If I did such a bad job, tell me... Why did it heal up and go away completely? Hmm?
Wow. This is one heck of a story. Thank God he is doing well now. You did a great job with him. He is very lucky to have you. He looks so happy now :) .
@gorp114 - The person I went to DID see the cyst... That's why it was taken care of. I went to a reptile rescue because a friend of mine runs it, I didnt see a vet.
What did he do when you popped that thing out? Did it hurt him or was he cool with it? I bet that had to have felt better. You did a great job. Totally AWESOME. The only thing better would have been a video of the popping!
@valleyjulie - He didn't do anything but sit there for me... He was very calm about the whole process. Even while squeezing it he didnt try to squirm or anything. Personally, I think animals can feel when you're trying to help them.

@MrBrandon12233 - Yes he did die, but it was well after this was healed. Not sure what made him die, but I am thinking it was his age.

That's nasty, but wait was that just something wrong with your beardie or can all get it,
If so how can I prevent this from occurring??
PvtRager 1 year ago
@PvtRager - This wasn't something that my other reptiles could get. What we believe happened was when I fed him a hissing roach, one of the spikes from the leg penetrated his gums, and eventually led to this abscess. The infection slowly built up into that giant mass. The hole in the gum from the leg spike just kept collecting bacteria and infection was building while we knew nothing about it until the mass was formed. So you should be okay, no need to worry about this happening to your reptiles

why didnt u just get the vet to remove it? there the ones that should be doing stuff like that not you
iluvcynder 1 year ago
@iluvcynder - It wasn't something that just could have been "removed" It was like having a big pimple or boil. It had to be LANCED and drained, which they did... it was up to me to keep it all clean and what not, under their supervision (which I had the whole time thank you very much). Hey, at least I'm not like half you scum bags out there who don't get ANY kind of vet or other expert care for their pets. If I did such a bad job, tell me... Why did it heal up and go away completely? Hmm?
UpstateNYPets 1 year ago 12

why didnt the vet remove it?
gorp114 1 year ago
How did they vet not see the cyst????
gorp114 1 year ago
@gorp114 - The person I went to DID see the cyst... That's why it was taken care of. I went to a reptile rescue because a friend of mine runs it, I didnt see a vet.
UpstateNYPets 1 year ago
What did he do when you popped that thing out? Did it hurt him or was he cool with it? I bet that had to have felt better. You did a great job. Totally AWESOME. The only thing better would have been a video of the popping!
valleyjulie 1 year ago
@valleyjulie - He didn't do anything but sit there for me... He was very calm about the whole process. Even while squeezing it he didnt try to squirm or anything. Personally, I think animals can feel when you're trying to help them.

lol the abscess removed looks like an fly/cricket in a rock xD
