The crazy thing about that season is Notre Dame was ranked #1 TWICE that season and lost both to Stanford AND Penn State while top-ranked. If I'm not mistaken, that wasn't accomplished again until 2007 (THE craziest season in CFB season that ended with LSU winning the national title besides having TWO LOSSES, Only the second time in the poll era that that had ever happened, the other team being Minnesota in 1960).

This was a really good Penn State team (and the first one I remember)...they went 9-3, but that year they played @ ND, @ USC, @ Alabama, Texas, Florida State in the Citrus Bowl (a virtual home game for the Noles), and Syracuse when they were still pretty good

I totally disagree, Rocket even though he was a great athlete, would not have had a major impact on us winning this game because of his absence. We won due to the fact that we played with 110% intensity, and by having an opportunistic defense that took advantage of Rick Mirer's two interceptions, Darren Perry was a beast in the secondary and had a stellar NFL career. Wish we could keep this rivalry going though. Always a good game between these two storied programs, WE ARE PENN STATE!!
