@jchoo34 Not really. It's pretty easy to hand hold. But when I run it with my Alien Bees ABR800 ring flash, it does start to get heavy when hand holding.
@FotografIasi It's only a big deal if you're shooting slower shutter speeds without support. Without support (e.g. tripod), as long as you can keep the shutter speed at or above 1/200sec on FF or 1/320sec on APS-C, you should be fine.
@ocabj unfortunately in wedding environment where I shoot I do not afford the luxury of using a tripod or shooting above 1/200 even if I pump up the ISO (on my canon 50D I use it only up to 3200). So I ordered a canon 70-200 2.8 is II. Now I wait for the lens to arrive at my front steps.
@Goodbadbritish I really like it. I shoot 2 weddindgs with it the last 2 weekends. I have to start editing the photos to see how the photos came up thanks' to the new lens.
Thank you so much for this great review. I own a 7d as well and I am looking forward in purchasing the same lens you did. I would like to know if you noticed a difference in quality, sharpness, etc with this lens on the 7d compared with the 5d mark ii. I am frustrated that the 7d is not a full frame camera, so I wanna know if that will bring down image quality even with a superb lens like the Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM. Thank you very much!
@gadernal617 The lens is going to be great on the 7D or any other crop body. An APS-C sensor isn't going to "bring down image quality" negating the lens quality. The quality of the glass is the most important part of the camera with regards to image quality.
@Recon9143 I actually don't have any real good, controlled test shots with this lens on the 40D. My 7D was my primary body at the time I bought the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II so pretty much all the photos with this lens was taken with the 7D. I recently sold the 40D to acquire the 5D Mark II, so I don't have the 40D to play with anymore.
@coddot I actually compared this against the 200 f/2.8L II and the 70-200 f/2.8L IS (original). Click on the link in this video's description which goes to my blog review. But yes, the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II is just as sharp as the 200 f/2.8L II wide-open.
@TotalBizcut Adorama and B&H started shipping them out last week. Canon appears to have been ahead of schedule on their estimated release of April. Note that Canon has released a press statement (at least on the Canon Japan website) that they have a shortage of the lens already due to higher than expected demand. Pretty crazy that so many people are shelling out the $2500 USD (or higher) for this lens.
@ocabj Oh wow thats cool. That must have been exciting to get that. i would love to get a 70-200 its next on my list after my 24-105. Thanks for the video
I saw the latest buzz on canonrumors about it being in testing. I want to get a 24-70 next, but I don't really value the IS on it. What will impress me with a new 24-70 revision is if they redesign it so it's internal zoom as opposed to an external extend/retract zoom design.
Does the weight of the lens bother you?

how is the 200 2.8 ii prime without the IS? Is it that a big downside compared to the 70-200 2.8 is II ?

I plan on buying this lens. I just collect my savings to do so..
As for I know the IQ is excellent BUT I plan on using this lens also sometimes with Canon TC's:
have you got any idea how is the AF speed and IQ when we compare the 4 setups:
1. C50D + C 70-200 f/2.8 IS II USM + C 1.4 TC II,
2. C50D + C 70-200 f/2.8 IS II USM + C 1.4 TC III,
3. C50D + C 70-200 f/2.8 IS II USM + C2.0 TC II,
4. C50D + C 70-200 f/2.8 IS II USM + C 2.0 TC III.

@jameslcr The 70-200 f/2.8L IS II is my go to lens for portraits. If I had to pick only one lens for what I shoot, it would be the 70-200.
