Israel however by the end of the war, was a 100km from Cairo. Egypt got the Sinai back because of the peace treaty Sadat has signed with Israel, not because of their war effort. Sadat could have offered the peace treaty, while avoiding a war altogether and still get Sinai back.

The problem with the Egyptian army was they could not find the way to Tel Aviv, so they showed the Israeli army the way to Cairo.
I just wonder why Egypt begged for cease fire and why Egypt could not win the war or find the Israeli border.
The best video is still as Sadat went to Jerusalem in 1977 and begged the Sinai back from Golda, I feel sorry for this poor man, but great video.

Egypts weak army had 5 times more dead than Israel. Israel had 28 times more prisoners from Egypt. They Arabs attacked with 5 times more soldiers. Sadat asked for a cease-fire, not Israel. Sadat had to come to the winner Israel, not Israel to Egypt and he had to ask for peace. Golda told him off and asked him to sign a paper to be never a naughty boy again. Golda told him you can get your sand tray back after 10 years if you are a good boy and he was, so he got his sand tray back.

Egypt didn't receive the Sinai back as part of their war effort, at the top of their offensive they were only a few km from the canal, not even close to retaking the Sinai and it wasn't even part of their plan. Israel however by the end of the war, was a 100km from Cairo. Egypt got the Sinai back because of the peace treaty Sadat has signed with Israel, not because of their war effort. Sadat could have offered the peace treaty, while avoiding a war altogether and still get Sinai back.

The 3rd Army was completely encircled, running out of supplies and ammunition. The only reason Israel didn't crush the army was because of US intervention as a result of Soviet Union's threat to attack Israel if they moves forward. Perhaps you remember the images of Egyptian soldiers running towards UN convoys to get food and water.

My uncle was an Egyptian officer; he was heading a mobile missile unit for the Egyptian Army. As a child I remember he telling me how surprised he was, even then, that Israel recovered so quickly from the first Egyptian attack. He felt that if the Egyptians had accepted an early cease fire, or at least had not continued to lie to the troops in the field who felt they would soon pick out houses in the Tel Aviv area, the outcome would have been different. Anyway, a great guy, an officer.

How exactly Egypt did won the war? Egypt got thrashed and begged for mercy. How did Egypt show the world it can take on Israel, when it simply lost badly? Israel had taken 1000's of prisoners and where marching on Cairo how Egypt could have won? The peace deal came many years after the war and had virtually nothing to do with it. Israelis nice and gives back your land and you use that as an opportunity to say you won the war?

Egypt WON , israeli needed always help from other west nation and had always enter into a war with 50:1 soldiers. israeli always had to ask other usa for help and come least from 2 or sometime 4 sides. Now, Egypt realized that once there were Israeli tanks on the West bank of the canal they were in a big mess. Their armies were cut off and nothing stood between Israeli tanks and Cairo. Sure, Egypt could have opted to engage in a bloody war, throwing its millions of badly trained people against the Israeli tanks, Israel in this scenario probably would not have had the resources to win and occupy Egypt, and Syria in the North, but Egypt realized that it was better off asking for a ceasefire.

America would have gone to war for Israel; they could not have afforded to watch the Jews being wiped off the earth a second time. And the Soviets knew that. On the other hand, both, the Soviets and the Americans had no intention to go to an all-out war with each other over a tiny worthless piece of land in the Middle East. Especially not the Soviets, so both of them actually preferred a ceasefire. And nobody cared anymore what the Arabs wanted.

I'm sorry to burst your bubble. Yes on October 22 1973 a cease fire was call for but it wasn't in force until October 24 1973. Egypt was losing badly when the smoke cleared the Third army had no connection with the rest of the Egyptian forces. On the other hand Israeli forces were on the east bank of the Suez Canal as far south as Suez city. Israel built road across the Suez Canal asphalted it and was constantly supplying its troops on the south east side of the canal.
