its funny how so many people talk shit, yet none of you have every driven a mid engine rwd car. It is VERY different then a front engine rwd car/fwd/awd car. Stop thinking your the shit cause u did this lap in 7.30 on grand turismo and shit. Fact remains, if most of you even TIRED to drive a car like this in these corners, you will MOST likely spin out and end up in the ditch. stop talking shit when you dont even have your license.
what mods have you done at the car? it seems realy stable in the corners! I've been told they have some trouble with snapsteer. I haven't even seen any oversteer :-) For the moment I drive a Volvo S60 R '05, but I'm thinking of buying a MR Turbo '91. Only thing is I'm not so sure because of the handling probs. Don't want to crash my car on the NS :-)
driver was too careful around the circuit . there was a lot of lift off the throttle to early , it should be full power then hard brake then release the brakes and turn then full power immidietly. also on the braking there should of been alot more engine breaking as well. all this will get you at least a minuit shaved off the time
Could you post some info about your setup at the time of this in the description please if you get a chance? At the moment, I'm going through comments to learn what I can lol
How much had you been on the track before this vid?
Ive been round the ring around 60 laps,10 on my bike and the rest in a Golf gti, Bmw e36 325i and a Mitsubushi evo4 ,This is very smooth drive so with more laps the times will fall, well done.
@mtvful No attitude here, I mean exactly what I say - lower power Championship MR2's on R888's (Semi Slicks) are faster on track than my Turbo (Certainly on the Continentals I had at the time...) And I would very much like to see your car on semi's going through those corners.
If you have official paperwork, I can only assume that is in the form of a time sheet from one of the closed RMA / RSA trackdays? or from one of the racing schools operating there??
@mtvful A 200ps Beams is no slouch and happily capable of <9mins with the right driver... You were using semi-slicks??? you can't really compare that with road rubber. My daily driver tubby can't keep up with 170ps MR2 Championship NA's running R888's. Post your vid,I'd love to see you through those corners!
@paulport what bhp where you running at the time?? not a bad lap obviously it could have went faster if you where off your head on drugs and didn't want to take your car home in 1 piece lol this was a good lap none the less mate don't listen to the bullshitter's that have never been lol i ain't ever been too it but i play it on forza 3 it's a pretty realistic very demanding track you do not want to be half asleep on it lol
lol that kid seriously hasn't got a fucking clue XD as said, go buy an MR2 turbo and lets see your attempt at that lap. Hopefully i will be going next year in my n/a and upload a vid of that. superb, smooth driving paulport
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
No. Sorry... that is slow. Moose slow. That is not a good lap for a Turbocharged MR2. This guy is more than one minute slower than a Subaru STi. BMW SUVs lap faster than this guy.
OK kid, go buy yourself a MR2 turbo and do better. I bet you'd spin within a minute.
paulport didn't seem to be pushing it too hard on the turns, but he made it around reasonably quick and had things under control, which deserves credit. I doubt I'd do much faster myself, even with a bit more power.
Yes... I Did make it myself (See very early comments) - Do Omori make a Digital Gauge now??? I know someone in the USA makes a numeric readout MR2 Replacement (Would love to know where they got the Pressure Sensor as good ones are expensive!) Mine has a Numeric display, LED-Bar, and a display interface to a Innovative-Motorsport Wideband Lambda sensor
The forced induction Mk1 MR2's (1.6 Litre) were Superchargers, The Mk2 (2 Litre) were Turbocharged. This is a Revision-3 Mk2 MR2 Turbo which means it had the 241Bhp engine from factory. Forced induction MR2s were only sold in the USA and Japan, everywhere else only had the naturally-aspirated versions. I imported this one from Japan as its Right hand drive
I have upgraded by brake setup recently with Nitrack front disks and Redstuff on the front and Greenstuff back and it made a huge diference on inicial bite and overall decelaration, but in a very twisted road (Arrabida in portugal) after some runs the brake pedal almost went to the floor. My question is do you have upgraded brake hoses?
Ah Yes... I have Goodridge Braided all round (Been on there years) Although I don't think they made much difference! Not that Braided Hoses would affect your 'peddle to the floor' experience, stock ones would not swell that much. I expect that is purely the 'Stuff' pads giving up.
Honestly give the Carbotech pads a try next time on Plain Cheap Disks - flush your fluids through with any generic DOT5.1 (I use Lucas or Halfords Brands and just change it once a year)
At the time of the Video I think I was running some low-Mu (Low coefficient of friction) Kevlar pads from Japan on standard disks. Not much Bite, but consistent when hot.
More recently I have been using Panther+ from Carbotech. These pads are incredible! Very High Mu, Strong initial bite when cold, they keep working up above 1300'F with no fade even on standard disks!! Look for sparks at night ;o)
You can mailorder Carbotech from Rogue Motorsport, they started stocking on my recommendation
Good lap, paul. I like your catch (before the throw) at 2:55 and after ~7:25. Those were the only occasions I noticed your smooth style roughen up! Purely out of curiosity, how many times have you spun this car? ;)
At the Nurburgring?? three Times, Twice without much warning on a damp patch, and once at the half way point again in damp when I thought going into the turn..."Hmm, might be a bit off balance here" On the road, I've spun / drifted a few times, always On Snow (The MR2 is un-drivable on Snow). The car has been my daily driver for 8.5 years!
Those must have been heart-pounding moments, its remarkable what tiny differences can make at speed. A wonderful little car the mr2, sounds like a great challenge, I'm highly tempted to pick one up. Also, theres a great video on here of someone in the snow in an MR2, worth looking up.
Take a look back in the early comments - full rundown there. For your 93 turbo, first thing you should do is a couple of Airfield Trackdays so you can learn to enjoy Rear Wheel Drive with run-off :o). Use good tyres, correct width, use good Brakes - plain disks are just fine... and finally change the oil regularly. My car is over 150K miles now on the original turbo.
Love the MR2, wish i could take mine on the Nurburgring, have always wanted to go there. Nice driving by the way. I'm still 16 but im getting pretty decent.
nice driving! I wish I could do this in my MR2, but I'm in the US :(
I actually visited the Nurburgring last summer and had Ms. Sabine Schmitz take me around in the Ring Taxi! That was one of the most memorable times in my life!
seems like we've got some pretty good driving here! good job... but why did you start the lap at the "antoniusbuche" and not after the "hohenrain-schikane"?
On 'Tourist Drive' days, you cannot do a full flying lap all the way round. Half way down the straight along Dottinger-Hohe you have to leave the track. It is therefore common for those that want to time a lap, to do it from 'Bridge to Gantry' - the two easiest landmarks near beginning and end. Thanks for the comment
Just noticed you are from Switzerland, and are already acquainted with the Nurburgring... The 24 Hr race is Great isn't it (so long as it doesn't rain too hard!) I must go again in 2008. Paul
yeah the 24H race is really great! i also guess the rain is pretty hard for the drivers, but if it's foggy as hell, it'll be even worse for them . thanks for the informations about the tourist drive days, i didn't knew that...
That was awesome! I love the second gen Mr2 and want( dream about) a 95'. I have been without cable T.V. for over a year and have'nt seen any F1 or W.R.C. as well as no BTCC. This is gonna rattle the windows through my 5.1 surround. Cheers
From the Hollywood Hills I see, Wonderful place, I've been out to LA twice this year already!
You should try BitTorrent downloads for all the F1 TV coverage - someone is usually hosting it within minutes of the race ending - it's how I catch all the ones I miss.
Thanks man, I've asked all over for some online coverage and people think I'm crazy. I am usually told "Bernie keeps a tight leash on that....". Well, I am a sucker for screaming over a long straight, into a whipping right hairpin and over a crest. Thanks for the info.
that was awesome, clean lines with controlled steering and throttle....if u add more go-faster parts on ur MR2 and lap the Ring again, post it up! cheers :)
I've done this lap 10 seconds slower (B to G) than this in a 106 gti, N/A 1.6 16v! That was with a gearbox that didn't work and a deattached (oops) rear ARB! I think I could go back and do a sub 9 minute with a poxy french hatch, so I'd expect better from a 2.0 16v turbo mr2
Being a Japanese car, the ECU has a 180 Km/h speed limiter built in. I've never removed my limiter as I much prefer a 180Km (112MPH) Speedo for daily driving (Think UK speed traps) - and I rarely want to drive faster than that anyway. So in answer to your question, 180Km/h, in two places: 1) Between Flugplatz and Schwedenkreuz, 2) If I keep my foot in beyond the gantry at Dottinger Hohe. PS, Thanks ;o)
I am 100% convinced that 8m32 is achievable in a stock MR2 turbo. But an accident with "Damage on" in real life means you go home without a car and with $20~30,000 Barrier repair fees to pay. Look at my other videos for something I filmed from my own car at the Nurburgring. Something you don't forget
wow that's an incredible lap time for that hella long track. so is it open to public? i thought it was a race track but im here in the states and only see it in video games lol which are still XTREMELY accurate in pretty much every aspect. i could probably do it w/o loss of ctrl bc i have done it so many times in forza forza 2 and pgr3. lol not too confidently tho
I'm a little confused. Is this a high way? I think I saw you pass a station Wagon (7:52). If it is how come there are so few cars on the road. Excellent driving BTW.
Unfortunately Bilstein no longer make a shock for the Mk2 MR2. Toyota have stopped production of the spring seat, the volumes are too low for Bilstein to tool up themselves.
Your best bet for a full aftermarket system is Tein. Alternatively you can obtain Toyota shock absorber assemblies from a Rev1 Mk2 which can be re-built using adjustable Koni shock inserts for around the same price as the old Bilstien nonadjustable shocks.
You can still lower the car with Tein STech Springs.
Cool :D

Great video, u must know the track.
These cars are indeed hard to keep in line - and best kept in line by smooth driving. Any aggressive steering inputs are not welcome.
Traffic slows u down occasionally.
Sounds like tire squeel from standard road tyres - I hate them with a passion (everytime I drive my wife's road car).
Have u been back with better tires?

To all the Americans: Yep, it's a public road. Anybody can drive it and it's in Germany so there's no speed limit. Just pay the toll and you're in.
PS: It doesn't lead anywhere much and it's always full of racer-wannabes so the normal public tend to avoid it.

i did it on PS2's Grantourismo 4 in 8:32 with stock mr2 :D .. suppose its a drivin simulator, not real life..

Nice driving. Any idea how many G's the MR2 can pull in a corner?
I know it weighs over a tonne, so not quite so good as a Lotus Elise

um... paulprot, by any chance do you know anything about the Toyota JZX100-110 series?

I'm a little confused. Is this a high way? I think I saw you pass a station Wagon (7:52). If it is how come there are so few cars on the road. Excellent driving BTW.

It is essentially a one-way toll road. Some sections have no speed limit like the Autobahn, and some do - and they enforce it!
There is a fee for driving on the road, and anything can go on it (I've been past Coaches full of sightseers)

hey i need you help. bilsteins or coilovers ? thanks
namsuh 4 years ago
Unfortunately Bilstein no longer make a shock for the Mk2 MR2. Toyota have stopped production of the spring seat, the volumes are too low for Bilstein to tool up themselves.
Your best bet for a full aftermarket system is Tein. Alternatively you can obtain Toyota shock absorber assemblies from a Rev1 Mk2 which can be re-built using adjustable Koni shock inserts for around the same price as the old Bilstien nonadjustable shocks.
You can still lower the car with Tein STech Springs.

Suspension:
Bilstein yellow sports shocks (non adj) on stock springs and roll bars.
Continental Sport Contact Tyres (They do NOT work well on the MR2!)
Carbotech Panther+ brake pads on Plain Disks and Stock Calipers.
Other than that, it's a full fat, leather seats, stereo, aircon etc everyday road car.
Paul.
PS, The car is regularly trackday'd and now has 140,000 miles on original turbo and clutch. Big Thumbs up for Toyota Engineering.

Thank you for all your comments,
The Car is a Japanese 'Gen3' Turbo, that I imported to the UK in completely standard trim January 2000.
At the time of the video, the spec lists as follows:
110,000 Mile stock internals 3sGTE engine, Stock ECU ~275 Bhp.
Original CT20b turbo running 16psi on a home designed EBC.
The blue thing in the dash is a home designed LED Boost Gauge.
Greddy Intercooler, HKS BOV, Altair-Inc 3.25" pipework Exhaust (Quiet!)

To be read in the voice of little tricycle kid in "The Incredibles":
"That was totally wicked!"
I'm an MR2 turbo owner and the Nord schleife is truly at the top of my "to do before I die" list. Pls drop by the MR2OC roadrace forum and say hi.
