Is there really such a thing as race? I've heard people say they're not white, they're Latino and Mexican, which doesn't make sense since there are Latino and Mexican whites, and I've had to correct them. It makes me wonder if we really have an instinct to recognize who is and isn't white, or if we're taught by society to believe in race. I think if we driven by instinct to recognize people by race, we'd all know that hispanic and Mexican aren't races and we wouldn't have to be corrcected.

Is there really such a thing as race? I've heard people say they're not white, they're Latino and Mexican, which doesn't make sense since there are Latino and Mexican whites, and I've had to correct them. It makes me wonder if we really have an instinct to recognize who is and isn't white, or if we're taught by society to believe in race. I think if we driven by instinct to recognize people by race, we'd all know that hispanic and Mexican aren't races and we wouldn't have to be corrcected.

I like Pres. Carter's basic honesty and thoughtful-ness (good books about the idiocy and nonsense that is the middle-east, etc.), but I DO think he is over-stating the case on this Joe Wilson/ Race business. There always seems to be evidence of SOME racism, but "overwhelmingly" so... kind of a stretch, I think.

How much he paid them, how they were treated, the record of all the proper taxes taken out and paid to the govt.? Black people didn't just all of a sudden wake up and decide that half-white people are black. White America made that rule up. But, all of a sudden, nobody knows where it came. "Why doesn't he ever say he's white?" with the dumbfounded look. It's unbelievable to me how obtuse white America is about this subject. What if Wilson was calling the White side of Obama a liar? There is nothing "honest" about Carter calling Wison a "racist," when there is nothing in Wilson's background to suggest that. The term "racist" is now used for any situation where a White disagrees with a Black. It has no more impact. It's as common as saying "hey , what's up?" Carter just doesn't realize that the "racist" card trend is over. He's probably still saying "groovy."

If THE FACT that racism is behind much of the opposition to Obama and Carter was honest about it has no impact, why are you on commenting on this video? The only reason why people are so angry is because they know it's true. An ex-President saying it just validates it. EVERYTHING that Obama's opposition has a problem with is not rooted in racism, but a great deal of it is. For example, your comment about Wilson talking to Obama's white side. Like black people made up the "one-drop rule."

I'm sorry but I was looking at the news that day and when Carmona was on the news and declared interim President, there were U.S. troops standing behind him with machine guns and Chavez was reinstalled the next day. I remember thinking how strange and what was that all about? The U.S. was definitely involved. I don't know how deeply, but you could see it with your own eyes that we were involved.

Jimmy Carter is of course right. Obama has clearly been the victim of racism from some levels of the right the only question to what degree. Modern republicans like to use terms like "using the race card" and "race baiting" to deflect from any racist feelings or motivations they may still have. Its as if the issue of racism is no longer a legitimate concern, as if America is suddenly entirely free of racism. We all know it isn't.

It's amazing how white America gets convenient amnesia. Black people didn't invent the "one-drop rule." White people invented that law to keep the "race" pure. Now, all of a sudden, they don't know where it came from. Yeah, it is racist that one drop of black blood makes you black. But, when black people are proud of that one drop then it's racist. But, you're not acknowledging where the racism actually comes from. Obama is black according to white America, not the other way around.

Obama is first human & then what he wants to be. If you want to view him as black, if he wants to be black, if whites want to see him as black or white, it's all racism in one way or another.
Obama is mixed race, which means he's not black and not white.

If Obama is not black, neither am I and neither are most "black" people in this country. And America has NOT come a long way since segregation and slavery, obviously. I'm not "one race" either genetically speaking, but I'm classified as black. That didn't have anything to do with Obama. That classification existed a long time ago. Racism still exist because there are people who still think black people are inherently inferior and other races are superior.

I also have many Turkish, Albanian and Tunesia(?) friends. And they all give a fuck where they come from and what believe they have.
My Jewish friends tell me the funniest Jew Jokes by the way :p
So I'm living in a community where racism doesn't really exist. And as I don't know many black persons I assumed they wouldn't/couldn't be racist...like my other friends.

Cenk, I totally disagree with you. Carter didn't just address Joe Wilson outburst. He was also addressing the tone of attacks against Obama. Wilson is an old, white man with a misplaced sense of entitlement who grew up in the south in a time when overt racism what not only acceptable, it was patriotic. Obama was born a muslim to a muslim father, was raised a muslim, was described as devout by classmates, and yet converted to Christianity, which of course means that under Sharia law he could face the death penalty.
If that's all true then fine. If his conversion is a lie then he's potentially a very dangerous man. f he admitted to being a progresive muslim that would be fine too.
