I was at this concert and I can tell you absolutely for sure that the entire 100,000 crowd in the Great Lawn and everyone else hearing it throughout all of Central Park had goosebumps to this song. SO POWERFUL!!!
look at butchs and carters face at the end, that is just pricless, they are like fuck i cant believe that was so bad ass. i cant even imagine what itd be like to be part of something like that. chills down my spine. DMB forever
When the song finishes, Dave does say, "You all take care of yourselves and look after each other". To me, this song says just that! It's a brilliant expression of mixed emotions (often dark) that arise in all of us when we seek to balance our own needs with those of others! And Jo, Thank you! <3
I like this song, but I think Dave was depressed when he wrote this song. It's a dark song, but a good one nevertheless. The most jarring lyric in this song for me is the line:
a lot of his songs seem to stem from battles within onesself...maybe its dark in that he's become somebody he doesn't like, somebody who trusts others more than himself, and to get out he's gotta do it himself and not expect any help from "god on high".
I reckon it's dark as well. it's about relying on yourself. about not trusting others. and from a mucial perspective, you've gotta admit it sounds heated and angry. "hoping to god on high is like clinging to straws whilst drowning"
You really think the song is dark? I see it differently. The message I get is about self reliance, not looking elsewhere (up, down, all around) for approval, life, joy, etc. When you realize what you are you'll find all those things inside your own self. Just an opinion/perception.
Man, he explodes with expressed passion and feelings in this somewhat dark song. I love it. It seems that DMB loves it, too. Thanks for posting. Gawd!! I am still reeling from it.
