I remember the night this was telecast back in the 1970's when they were unveiling the restored Hollywood Sign. It is wonderful to see it today and forever. Miss De Carlo's version is heads above the rest.....so sincere. What a beautiful lady. What a talented lady.
I had the great privilege of seeing and hearing your mother do this song on stage in Boston during the pre-Broadway tryouts. She was magnificent, as always! A very beautiful lady, the only one who could give Ava Gardner a run for her money! I also read her autobio, which I enjoyed very much. A fine lady! God bless her!
I am Yvonne's son Bruce and it is very nice to hear such compliments .!There was another number which Prince and Sondheim had fashioned called "Oh boy can that Boy Foxtrot" I wish there was some video on that one !!My moms memorial site is at officialyvonnedecarlo
@bucknevada711 Bruce, your Mom did so much - movies, TV, stage, she always made a huge impression. None more so than Follies. This song is truly a salute to your mother and it has to be gratifying that so many great performers have tried to make it their own. But your Mom will forever be its true inspiration. And yes, she's still here!
here's to lily munster! who knew when we were kids watching "the munsters" that this lady had such a great and varied career. yvonne de carlo certainly owns this song, as has been pointed out by others, sondheim wrote it especially for her after she auditioned for a different part in follies.
I've heard many other Broadway "royalty" perform this song, but Ms. Yvonne is perfect because it's HER song. The tremolo in her voice and her low register instantly puts her own inimicable stamp on it. Tugs my heart, breaks it and then makes it soar with hope!
I have heard many versions of this and none matches Yvonne's. This was written especially for her, and knowing her history from glamour girl to Lily Munster makes the lines "First you're another sloe eyed vamp / Then someone's mother, then you're camp" so much more poignant.
This is from "Hollywood's 75th Anniversary". It was broadcast live 11/14/78 --- I remember watching it and being too young to appreciate this performance. She was standing under the famous "HOLLYWOOD" sign because this was the unveiling of it's restoration after years of deterioration. Incidentally the sign AND Yvonne were almost the same age here 55 and 56 respectively and both "still heeeeeeeeere".
Yvonne DeCarlo CREATED the role on Broadway. She IS the original EVERYONE else is just an IMITATION . SHE WAS HIRED BY SONDHIEM AND HAROLD PRINCE. BRAVO...SHE HAD A GREAT TALENT THAT WAS NEVER REALLY TAPPED
Always at the top of her game! Her beauty carried on her entire life - the eternal looker. That voice stayed with her too. Yvonne DeCarlo quantifies the definition of the word, "AMAZING"!!

There are so many great versions of this song but the best I have ever seen or heard was Georgia Brown. SHe blew me out of my chair at the Music Box.

Even more....Sondheim actually wrote the song especially for Yvonne AFTER she had already been cast for the show "Follies". So it really was her's.

It's because we grew up on TV. She was one hell of a talented fox in the movies in the 40's and 50's.
