  • Thanks for creating and posting this! A fine tribute. And fascinating for anyone who knows the song but not the story behind it.

  • @daf827 Glad you liked it! Thanks for the comment :)

  • I've always assumed Mr. Hughes to be Howard Hughes?

  • Did you know his kids uncle is mark harmon

  • Real nice video about a great artist.I was walking out of a Grateful Dead NYE show at Winterland when we heard the sad news.

  • Fantastic vid, very worthy tribute. Thanks.

  • i've always had this song's lyrics burned into my head and i never knew the name of the song or the artist. one quick search on youtube and one lucky guess as the title of the song and i found it! :) thank you YouTube!

  • thanks for sharing! i love Ricky!!

  • Thats what you call a perfect, good looking, flawless, couple at 00:50...............I can bet Ricky or his wife had squadrons of fans who swooned over them.

  • I like this version better than the original.

  • @tommieparch I think he was saying that he'd rather stop music and drive a truck than be stuck playing the same old songs, rather than making new ones that he enjoyed playing.

  • good video, but your wrong on george harrison.. ricky was the poor mans elvis( elvis could do no wrong ) ricky could of made a great living doin his oldies 4ever, but he got in over his head with his new direction. when he stormed off the stage , that was a showing of his immaturiiy (he didnt know he wasnt elvis) . he kinda got some short term revenge with this song, but he never was known as a great singer or writer, he came from a succesful family, so the dig at elvis drivin a truck/ jealously

  • love you buddy! can't believe he was boo'd, though.

  • THIS WAS MYHUSBANDS SONG FOR THE WAY HE LIVED HIS LIFE RIP RICK AND LOUIS 12/20/42-3/27/11 THIS SONG WILL LIVE ON FOREVER.

  • @adjkber7 That's very touching...

  • They say he was freebasing coke when the plane caught fire. They also say that Mama Cass choked on a sandwich. Unsubstantiated rumors!

  • You have to watch this. It is the reason Ricky died according to his daughter Tracy. He bought the haunted house of Errol Flynn.

Go to HULU AND "Celebrity Ghost Stories". Episode three, Season Two!

  • Saw Rick in one of his last concerts, along with Frankie Ford and others.

  • i just did a cover of the song and I would be honoured to post here my tribute as a response to your nice video. Thanks for all the explanations you gave me about this beautiful song

  • @JeanChemla2 I'm always very happy to hear from fellow Ricky Nelson fans. Thanks for posting your nice comment and tribute video :)

  • This is exactly the way I have heard the story over the years. Including wiki. Well done. The story behind the song is as good as the song itself.

  • I believe Yoco bringing her walrus refers to marijuana. The line doesnt make any sense if it meant John Lennon, atleast not to me.

  • @ryanthepunk2002, John Lennon had taken to wearing long hair and a beard that had been affectionately referred to as his 'walrus look' by fans and the media...he also wrote a song called "I am the walrus".

  • This song will always remind me of being a little boy. On Saturday nights we would have fondo, and listen to a-tracks over the stereo. This was one of the tracks that stuck in my head, my Father would always explain meanings of songs to me

. You did a great job in explaining the meaning behind the words.

  • @mrJME99 Glad to have been of help, and thanks very much for your kind comment :)

  • nice mate, well done and thank you

  • Whoever thought "Mr Hughes was thought to be George Harrison" must have been

smokin mushrooms or DMT. Anyone who grew up (and lived in the) in the early 70s

knew he was refering to the one & only Howard Robarb Hughes

Back in those days Mr. Hughes whereabouts were the topic of many conversations

& speculations, everyone in the nation was wondering what disguise or ploy was going to be used to get Mr.Hughes to his next hideout.

I can't believe some idiot out there believes that crock of SH

  • @hollishoward888, you can disagree without being nasty.

  • @Suzywriter well said, thank you :)

  • I had heard this before , but without all the details. Thanks for a great video.

  • Miss you,Rick. <3

  • I just learned that Ricky Nelson was a dead beat father to his youngest child, Eric Jude Crewe. I know he didn't like the mother but he should've been a father to his own child. A paternity test taken back then said he was the father. I thought he was raised better than that. He even left his son out of his will. He never met him or anything. How sad. I think differently of him now.

  • He was a great musician, from a great musical family.

  • Thanks for the explanation. Always wondered. But Ricky was not a pioneer of rock n roll. He started out the son of a big band leader who put him on TV. He tried rock and roll copying Elvis. It was "Ozzie and Harriet" made him a "teen throb." His first records , imo were shallow.. But he broke away from being a TV teen throb and developed his own style and music which in my opinion was pretty good. I think he was at the top when the crash took him. Huge loss.

  • @thestoryplease Thank you for your very kind comment. Yes, it was his parents TV show that gave him his chance and made him an instant star. I guess that's why his early hits sounded a bit lightweight, but he did develop as he grew older and matured. When I listen to his less well known songs, I appreciate his talent more than ever.

  • Well done! What a great man. Super song, glad he penned it. I'm sure it impacted many lives. I think he and the Everly Bros. changed the course of rock and roll.

  • @lightlyone Thank you! Yes, Ricky, Don & Phil were among the pioneers of rock'n'roll and deserve all credit for their achievements :)

  • The lyrics to this song -- travelin' man Ricky.

  • GREAT TRIBUTE SONG TO RICKY !!!

Thank you for posting. All Thumbs Up !!!

  • @Banderuola66 Thank you for a very nice comment :)

  • @Banderuola66 Ditto. Thanks for the work you put into this. I just recently rediscovered Ricky Nelson. So I am trying to make up for lost time.

  • God Bless you Ricky and your entire family. I think we have all had a few days like this.

  • Well, I am 38 and I must say I just heard this song on the latest episode of "Men of a Certain Age" and it touched me. I have probably heard parts of this song a 100 times at different parts of my life and never took note until now. So, I looked it up and found this. He seemed like a great man and any man would be proud to have boys like that. God Bless the Nelson family, their fans and the way we Americans used to strive to be...

  • @Haywoodjashutup Great comment :)

  • What a thoughtful and well done video

  • @lastmango57 Thank you :)

  • today it was 25 years ago - Ricky Nelson - RIP

  • @ladyloveevenmore yes it was indeed. Thanks for remembering one of the legends of rock'n'roll.

RIP, Ricky, you will not be forgotten

  • Genius!!!! Brilliantly done! Love it! Ricky would be proud I am sure. :) I remember I loved the song a little girl but I did not learn the meaning behind Ricky's song until I was in my late teens. Peace. ☺♫♫

  • @faeryquene Thank you! I'm glad you like it, and I appreciate your comment. Peace :)

  • very nicely done!..love his music...it was very informative to those that dont know the truth..not to mention..years after his plane crash, that they said was from him smoking crack on the plane, an in-depth investigation, showed that the type of plane he was flying in was an inveritable death trap!...clearing and keeping his good name!...nice job!!!

  • @bilvis48 thank you, appreciate the positive comment...he will always be remembered as one of the greats

  • i was at the garden party.

  • Dylan pretty much wiped his kind

  • I always wondered who Mr. Hughes was. Thanks for clearing that up.

  • The tag at the end of the song was actually from a bank commercial on television at the time, First Federal Savings and Loan (just sing the words with the tag; they fit). FFS&L ended their commercial with that same tag and Ricky used/adopted it almost like an "in your face" to anyone who didn't like the song or its message bc it didn't really fit in the song. "Take that!"

  • Sound for this video is super. A treat to listen to such great music. Todays music just can not compete with this.

  • Thank you for the full story and an excellent job on the vocals!

  • @feraxks You're welcome, and thanks for the nice comment :)

  • I heard this song for the first time last week on the 70s channel on satellite radio, really liked it and purchased it on iTunes. My father-n-law told me the story behind it and I just checked it out here on youtube. Thanks for doing such a great job!

  • @mackdude0202 You're welcome, thanks for the nice comment :)

  • I am glad you shared this,, I had always wondered the story behind this song! great video and pics.

  • This is awesome, thanks for sharing.

  • @RewdAwakening you're most welcome :)

  • Thanks, this is my favourite Ricky Nelson song but I never knew the meaning behind it. Now I do and I appreciate it even more.

  • @easton1187 appreciate your comment, thanks :)

  • The story behind Graden Party is really nice. But the sound track or whoever is was singing didn't sound good. I don't think it is Rick himself. Maybe somebody trying to sing hi song. Anyway, I enjoyed the story. Thanks.

  • @Shakingsteven hmmm...i'd be more inclined to take notice of your criticism if you could sing a single note yourself, or tell the difference between A flat and an apartment. Thanks anyway ;)

  • i'm upset that he was booed. I'm only 16, but i love this guy.

  • @lordXXofXXtai uh why was he booed?

  • Wow. Thanks.

  • @LAULGIREL ...and thank you for the comment :)

  • Thanks so much ! Great job !

  • @pat976 You're welcome! Thanks for the comment :)

  • one of the all-time greatest songs

  • *Way* too much treble...

  • Thank you Pequinito for telling us the story of Ricky´s career. I didn´t know these things. It´s a beautiful song, and all of these complaints about LeBron James leaving Cleveland and Metallica doing a totally different style of music fot 10 years shows how little the public understands that celebrities are real people who have the right to do what they want. I really love YouTube, and I really love people like you who bring good entertainment to the masses. Thank you

  • @Jeremiah052179 You're most welcome, Jeremiah, and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for such a gracious comment :)

  • @Jeremiah052179 Thanks Pequinito

  • you can't please every one, You have to please your self. thats for sure. thanks for the memories

  • Wow just came across this one and still remember Ricky on the first American Bandstands.

  • Sorry folks, but I prefer Marillion's song at the same title. :)

  • Omigawd, this piece of garbage made me cringe when it came out in the 70's. Ranks among the all time worst songs I'veever heard.

  • This is for you Stash !

  • Brilliant video, brilliantly covered, faved********

  • Sadly underappreciated, Rick Nelson's records were some of the very best of the era. Ozzie played a big part in putting him with good producers/material. And then there's James Burton, a true guitar badass.....

  • @wackernie2009 That's so true...

  • This was great. Thanks for posting.!! I loved him Nelson. Rest in Peace Ricky. xx

  • I love the sleal

  • GREAT

  • Great job. I grew up with the nelson family in the 50's on tv. always thought rick got a bad break in NYC.

  • RIP Ricky Nelson ^~^ you are the best~!

  • brilliant thanks for the story

  • Very nice background. I have loved this song since it came out. I did not know the whole story, but suspected a pretty close version. I wish we had been given more time to let him know what a star he really was.

    Thank-you for putting this together.

  • One of my favorite songs...did not know the story.

  • Very nice and fitting video for Mr Nelson!

  • It's alright Rick. We'll have a garden B B Q. But only in your disguise my friend. Sleep Well. Until we meet again. Godbless.

  • What a pathetic grave marker he got, what is up with that? The Nelson Family had that hit TV show for ten years at least and the family can only come up with is a lousy a plaque in the ground?

  • Thanks for the video, from Hawaii.....

  • @ho8241682 Thank you for watching :)

  • I was 7 years old when Rick died, however, I was raised on his music...and anyone booing him makes me furious and sad. I love this man.

  • @ustigirl78 Thanks for the lovely comment :)

  • @Pequinito

anytime....I truly adore Rick Nelson....my name is Kristy....so I used to say "Kris Nelson" as though it were me....yes...I was a BIG BIG dork....and born WAAAAY tooooo late

  • Nice job Pequinito! It could be noted that "She Belongs to Me" was a minor hit for Rick in the late 60s, a song written by Bob Dylan - not a song that would endear him to his fans from the 50s, but certainly one in tune with his "country rock" persona. Thanks again for this nice tribute to Rick.

  • @RawUmbers1 Thanks for the comment. Yes, I loved his version of "She Belongs to Me", I thought he sang it sensitively.

  • Ahh Yes!.Excellent Tune!.Thank you For This Upload:>

  • You're welcome, thanks for the comment :)

  • Thank you so much for this wonderful tribute video to my favorite teen idol ever ~ Rick(y) Nelson. I absolutely love him and his music and your tribute is excellent. Thanks again for sharing. Is this version on an album? It's so good. He was superb in concert and was so friendly and loving to his audience. I saw him in concert only once in November of 85. I was 16. The next month he was gone. So sad. Lovely story and tribute.

  • Thank you for your very kind and warm words. There's something special about meeting up with like-minded people who share the same values, and I'm touched by your obvious love and admiration for Ricky which I share. I'm glad you like my humble tribute, thank you again. Best wishes

    Pequinito :)

  • A song borne out of Tragedy, Garden Party is a very tasteful song based on it. What was more interesting was reading the story behind it. Though I read about the song's origins, I've never got the full story-until now. Thank you for both a timeless classic and the story behind the song.

  • @76659gll your comment is much appreciated, thank you :)

  • This is really excellent - thank you for sharing

  • You're welcome, thank you for the compliment :)

  • I'm on a major sleeping pill I just too and this is some crazy real world stuff! Everything looks all Alice in wonderland like

  • Thanks for sharing this wonderful video tribute to Ricky Nelson. His life was cut way too short but his music still lives on through people like you! Thanks!

  • @monkeefan75 You're welcome, thanks for watching :)

  • danke, das wußte man hier nicht.

    thanks

  • thank you for your music, rick

  • Thanks. I always thought he never got the recognition he deserved.

  • You're welcome :)

  • Pequinito COULD be the young Latino who took an album for Rick to sign. I got him to sign my dollar which he playfully pretended to pocket before he signed it! GOOD GOING MAN,,,heartfelt tribute to a GREAT singer who was headed to a New Year's Eve Show when the plane crashed. I recall the radio ads for the show. I was visiting my dad when I heard the sad news. A performer until the very end.

  • Thank you! Keep that signed dollar safe, memories like that are priceless :)

  • Enjoyed it. I thought I knew all the facts regarding how, and why this song came to be... but I learned a few new facts it seems.

  • Thank you, glad to be of service :)

  • and finally, THANX to Pequinito for this informative and well made audio.

Nice cover.....cool of ya to share it.

  • @mysterytrax hey, that's very kind of you to say so, thanks :)

  • Rick Nelson stood his ground and went beyond what the record companies and fans "expected" him to be. He was not alone, as we know. Other distinguished artists; such as Bobby Darin,

Dion Dimucci and the great Marvin Gaye

had the balls to do their own thing too, at the risk of giving up their former

"Pop Idol" crowns. True MUSICIANS know wtf they are doing and BRAVO for that.

  • Pequinito, this is a very nice and heartfelt tribute to a great guy and a great entertainer. Thanks for posting it.

  • @rep2291 You're welcome, thanks for the comment :)

I grew up to his music, it's the least I can do to honour his memory.

  • aww... i think he still looks great with long hair. i love his music.

  • Peq this is realy very good, very good singing and images /info.I´ve got the record with Ricky myself and it´s very good, but i think that this backing you use is better!!!

    Cheers Bertil

  • @berrasvideo thank you, Bertil, for your kind words, glad you like it :)

    Peq

  • i really like your cover, but the info went by to fast for a old dog like me to read.any way to slow it down?if not i will have to just stop and smell the rose's,and listen to rick tell me rick!stop and smell the rose's!

  • hi rick

i'm sorry that the captions went by too fast, but there was a lot of info and i had to squeeze it in somehow. i don't know if you can slow it down, so rick, stop and smell the roses :)

    cheers!

  • Sadly, Rick had to please his ex- wife- which is why he was flying in that dangerous plane trying to make money to keep her off his back- and the plane caught fire because of a faulty kerosene heater. James Burton said that even Jerry Lee Lewis who had owned the plane realised it was dangerous and quit flying in it.

  • Is this John Fogarty or is it Ricky Nelson singing? I totally agree with what the song lyrics say "you can't please everyone, so you've got to please yourself." From teen idol to mature performer.

  • Nice cover. There is a terrific cover of this song just released by John Fogerty and The Blue Ridge Rangers. Check it out.

  • Reveals an 80 year Nelson family tradition nurturing self esteem -Carpe Diem (Sieze the Day or Fate is in your own hands) Parents Ozzie & Harriet Nelson met as singers in Ozzie's 1930's dance orchestra - later O&H radio then TV shows included kids Ricky and David - Ozzie used the sitcom to develope teen idol Rick &film director David -Still in the biz today -R's kids-Tracy Gunner & Matt continue -Ozzie died June 3rd '72of liver Cancer followed by a self determining Harriet later that day.

  • Need to check your facts.......Harriet died of congestive heart failure on October 2, 1994 after appearing in many television shows until 1989.

  • Wow I haven't heard this song in a long time.

  • Such a handsome talented man and such an unhappy life.

This song always breaks my heart.

Thank you for this tribute to Rick.

    May he rest in peace.

  • I took this song as my anthem and i always wondered why Ricky wrote it,

so now I know, thanks you.

Can't please everyone is so true, gotta please yourself is so hard.

  • Who else has done a cover of this. I heard one on Country Cousins, Picadilly Radio in Manchester in the early 80s. Anyone remember who sang it ?

  • There's a great new cover version by John Fogerty with Don Henley and Timothy B. Schmit. Pretty similar to the original, but the singing is just incredibly good. and there's a great guitar lick towards the end. :)

  • Thank You : )

  • You're welcome : )

  • Better looking than Elvis... see :22

  • what a wonderful clip...thanks so much for sharing it.

  • thank you for the nice comment :)

  • Like American Pie and You're so Vain, this is a song with a great story and you presented it perfectly. Thanks for taking the time.

  • ...and thank you for your kind words, glad you like it :)

  • Now that was an eye opener for me! It really is true that songs tell a story but sometimes we need a little help to really understand. Thanks!

  • You're welcome, thanks for the comment! Glad to have helped :)

  • Wow I didn't know half of this story !

Thanks for the post, very much appreciated

  • You're welcome, thanks for the comment :)

  • Nicely done!

  • Thank you :)

  • I actually first heard this song on Saturday Night Live whe Bill Hader and Paul Rudd were singing it. I wanted to know the name of this song and I didn't find out till the song came on the morning after I saw Snl. It was a weird coincidence.

  • That's nice to know, thanks for sharing :)

  • when was this episode? is it here on youtube?

  • The concert took place in 1971; I don't think there is a recording of it otherwise it would have been posted on youtube by now

  • Me too dude, exactly the same thing...

  • Nice job of explaining why this song was born.

  • Thank you, very kind of you :)

  • I saw Ricky, live on the Carson show explaining what happened at the MSG that night. He felt that fans booed him off of the stage, but others said that the fans were booing security guards hauling off drugged-up concert goers. Also Ricky and I are 5 months apart in age and people used to say we looked alike, some girls called my Ricky. If there is any interest, I can post my picture to show you what he may look like at age 69. We aged well

  • Thanks very much for your comment, and yes, we'd very like to see your picture please, it would certainly be interesting to have an idea how Ricky would look if he were alive today :)

  • pequinto, who are you claiming invented country rock? I suggest you listen to some Mike Nesmith and the First National Band. A full decade before when you think it happened. I like Rick Nelson but he didnt poneer country Rock. Nez did.

  • Thank you for your informative comment. There are many opinions about this, and I don't necessarily disagree with you. I have a lot of respect for Mike Nesmith who is notable for writing Different Drum for Linda Ronstadt.

  • I really appreciate this information. I play and sing this song all the time, but I had no idea of what Rick was meaning.

Also, if one watches Rick play this song on the video, it is interesting that he played it with the 6th string tuned down...

  • Glad you like it, and thanks for the info about Rick's guitar tuning :)

  • Thank you Pequinito, for this; I had forgotten.

  • Glad you like it, thanks for the comment :)

  • RE: George Harrison as Mr Hughes: Wouldn't "Mr Hughes" be Howard Hughes, because he used to go out wearing disguises?

  • This has been the subject of much debate on the internet. You could well be right. Thanks for your comment :)

  • Thank You so much for posting this, I sang this song over and over as a kid and it was a soundtrack of the innocent fun in the 70s Summer road vacations. Hope the family is well.

  • Glad to hear you sang this. Thank you for your kind comment and for sharing your memories :)

  • another great cover thanks

  • thank you for all your support...have a great day :)
