im 22... i just installed the game today... and believe me i jumped when the first enemy showed up... and this is from a guy who played dead space and got scared too... this game is surely the inspiration behind a lotta games out today... good job dev team... :D
I am having a minor problem with this game, the enemies are not making ANY sound, and the ghosts arent either :I i really want to hear what the ghosts are saying, and the little background talk(what is a drop of rain compared to the storm, etc) and the enemies in their pain telling me to kill them and all that :/
@BobMcCob Mess? The atmosphere, sound design, graphics, upgrading system and gameplay were great. It may have bad textures there and there but the heart of the game is gameplay and you can play through this game in 3 different ways, plus you can start differently and end up playing differently.
I don't get what there's to complain about.
Bioshock isn't much different from System Shock 2, since both were made by Irrational. Well, part of Irrational.
@antisocialfatman yes, at the expense of being way more cryptic and tedious
now don't get me wrong, I 'm not hating on System Shock 2 or defending dumbing down, since I'm a very big fan of both the system shock series and bioshock series
but still, as far as gameplay goes, system shock 2 is really unnecessarily complex and rather unbalanced (compared to, say, Deus Ex)
About the weapon degradation... Looking Glass said they simply forgot to implement a single audio log that explained that The Many released a corrosive gas that makes weapons disintegrate. It was planned and they thought it was actually in the game. I dunno why they didn't fix that with the patch. Ah well, I turned it off anyway.
@AnonRanGER01 Yeah, I've read the transcript of the missing log online (unless it's a fake, but it is a fair explanation regardless of its canonicity), but it's very odd that they missed an explanation of so large a part of the game.
I do actually like the mechanic though and would never disable it, I just wish it was explained.
That was great. No cutscenes just scripted sequences. This game looks old but it looks very clean. I think I will buy it. Too bad bioshock had too rip it off.
@darkentity1000 - Not every zombie is a freakin' rip off of the Many. You might as well be saying the little zombie things in Minecraft are a rip off of the Many. You're an idiot.

@antisocialfatman Yes! And I thought I was the only one who believed that Bioshock is a game for kids. From the completely stupid RPG mechanics to the completely superficial "political and religious concerns" the game is supposed to make. Did I mention the ridiculously easy difficulty, the repetitious environments and basically the fact that tha developer's creativity ends after the first 2 levels? Whoever thinks that BS is art, is so so SO wrong!!! Great review by the way!!!
@antisocialfatman Awww come on now... Bioshock is absolutely stunning in every aspect... I haven't played system shock 2, and after your review I'm ashamed I overlooked such an influential installment...Although System Shock laid the foundations for Bioshock, Bioshock remains an interactive masterpiece. It's engrosing, art-deco aesthetic, foreboding atmosphere, dynamic gameplay and it's exploration of objectivism come together to make a pretty revolutionary game...
@mikeyh32 Lets see, they both have audio logs, hacking of vending machines, ghostly flashbacks, psi / plasmid abilities, and a story that takes place in a creepy inclosed & desolate location with a twist at the end, other than that, not much : )
@mees462 It *can*, but that doesn't men it will. It's a temperamental game. A common problem is not setting afinity with multiple core cpus. You want it running on 1 core only (google 'set affinity windows 7' for info). May not help, but it is a common problem.

Get good maintenance skill and enough modify for the first weapon mods (you'll find upgrade items for the level 2 weapon mods) and you're golden. The AR can kill the most powerful enemies in the game with a couple shots assuming you use the correct ammo. Doesn't stop it from being the scariest game ever made, though. :)

Scarier was a log from a lady finding a schematic for the cyber maidens and realizing that the diagram was of her body. She was next! I feared the protocol droids that talk to you soothingly so they can get close enough to explode in your face. There was a faint whirring as the cyborg assassins got close. You don't stand a chance of playing more games than I have, don't call me ignorant. You haven't even played a single japenese RPG. Bloodlines has essentially the same system as SS2 so your contradicting yourself.
@SaucisseMerguez Bloodlines has multiple ways of completing quests based on your unique skills such as language and stealth. System Shock 2 doesn't even HAVE quests, let alone multiple ways of completing them. You continue to exhibit your ignorance. You may have started when you were 4, but you act like you're 12. You have no idea who I am or what I play, but that kind of ignorance clearly defines your character.
@MisterAAnderson, never be ashamed of not knowing something, only of not wanting to know! Or something! I was only a dick to that guy because he was being an even bigger dick to me across several videos.
The 'J' stands for Japan. The J style of RPGs is like playing a novel. All you really do in those games is run between dialogue or combat instances. The player has very little impact on the characters or story and there is virtually no player-choice in terms of gameplay style. Mostly, anyway.
@antisocialfatman Ah, i guess you mean games like Devil May Cry? I know it has been made by a japanese group of people from Capcom. I think Resident Evil and Silent Hill are from Japan too.
@MisterAAnderson I haven't played it so I can't comment authoratatively, but Bioware is a Canadian developer, so despite the oriental setting I suppose no, it isn't.
That said, Jade Empire is much more action oriented than a traditional RPG.
Exactly what an RPG is is a point of some contention. I don't consider Bioware's games to be RPGs, and I don't consider 'RPG' to be an appropriate description of the gameplay in so-called JRPGs, but I am in the minority on that.
@antisocialfatman Very well then, thanks for the explanation, and thanks for keeping up these reviews, just the fact that you argument every statement allready gives me a reason to like them. :)
I really like Bioshock, but I found it more disturbing than frightening. It didn't have the sense of dread that SS2 had. SS2 definitely deserves a remake, providing they keep the original elements intact.
This game was scary as shit .. It had that great survival element whean I was low on Ammo and i didn't knew how long it will take too the next deposit.
this is one game that should be re made keep the gameplay the same maybe add some new features here and there (new weapons new abilities better artificial intelligence) but give it a HUGE graphics upgrade. That would be awesome
@MrJLaza It's not really better than Deus Ex. Deus Ex has everything SS 2 does minus the horror and a whole lot more besides, including better storytelling.
@MrJLaza Probubly because after Looking Glass studios disolved (one of the studios that developed this game) Many of the employees went to work for Ion Storm, the developer of Deus Ex.
Ive actually been planning on getting this game for quite sometime, I only really heard of it from the escapists bioshock review. Though finding the game now it costs almost as much as it did when it was new.
Hi, congrats on an awesome review. This game passed me by back in the day but I've managed to get a copy. I'm starting a blind lets play on monday. Wish me luck :D
One thing I never understood about both system shock 2 and bioshock is why the hell the main character is able to see ghosts. It's a very good way of telling the story but there doesn't seem to be much of an explanation as to why he's able to do it.
@gilgamesh310 It's actually explained in both games. In SS2 they are 'psychic echoes' to which your cyber rig is sensitive. In BioShock it's something to do with possessing the memories of others by using their adam or something.
I buy into the SS2 explanation for sure. Not so sure about the BS explanation.
@antisocialfatman Yeah I remember hearing the half arsed explanation for it in bioshock from one of the audio logs but that's exactly what it was - half arsed. I can't remember any explanation about it in SS2 but I suppose Ive only played through it once a good while ago and can't remember some things about it.
@imbadatnames390 Maybe, but consider that in SS2, there is telekinesis and telepathy. In that word, I find the idea of a 'psychic echo' quite credible.
It is sort of like how the smell of a perfume can linger in a room long after the woman has left, except it is for emotion, and only people attuned to psyonics can see them.
I get why you don't like it, but I think it's good.
Thank you for admitting that the game has a steep learning curve,a lot of people will not admit this for fear of their gaming dignity of something like that
I think I should install this onto my computer again. It has been a long time since I played this game. Its a pretty awesome game. The only part I hate about this game is that sometimes you can't find a key or where to go. Its not like Deus Ex, where you can have multiple ways to complete your objective. Other than that, I think its a good game.
Basically I've never had a horror game make me feel so uneasy IN THE DAYLIGHT because it has a level of stress which is vital to horror games. Sadly thanks to EA (the Knights of the Round Asshole) Bioshock now prevents us from having System shock 3 (this is actually really true and LGS is pissed) Bioshock takes all of the SS series's glory as a "spiritual sequel" (I call it rip-off). Bullshit.
My unlikely theory for the weapons breakage is that Xerxis, "knowing that weapons are present on the Von Braun and that you will likely be using them". Creates some sort of chemical agent that slowly “degrades” all firing weapons, in order to slow your progression.
everyone who reviews systemshock2 uses that intro

@antisocialfatman I am shy to ask, but i don't really know what the term JRPG mean. I mean what does the J signify?
MisterAAnderson 9 months ago
@MisterAAnderson, never be ashamed of not knowing something, only of not wanting to know! Or something! I was only a dick to that guy because he was being an even bigger dick to me across several videos.
The 'J' stands for Japan. The J style of RPGs is like playing a novel. All you really do in those games is run between dialogue or combat instances. The player has very little impact on the characters or story and there is virtually no player-choice in terms of gameplay style. Mostly, anyway.
antisocialfatman 9 months ago
@antisocialfatman Ah, i guess you mean games like Devil May Cry? I know it has been made by a japanese group of people from Capcom. I think Resident Evil and Silent Hill are from Japan too.
MisterAAnderson 9 months ago
@MisterAAnderson those games are all Japanese, but they aren't RPGs. DMC is a beat em up and Resident Evil and Silent Hill are survival horror games.
RPGs are considered to be games with stats, items, inventories, skills, classes and traditionally turn based combat.
A distinction is made between Japanese and Western RPGs, but there aren't really recognised distinctions in other genres.
JPRGs are games like Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger.

@antisocialfatman Is Jade Empire by Bioware a JRPG ?
MisterAAnderson 9 months ago
@MisterAAnderson I haven't played it so I can't comment authoratatively, but Bioware is a Canadian developer, so despite the oriental setting I suppose no, it isn't.
That said, Jade Empire is much more action oriented than a traditional RPG.
Exactly what an RPG is is a point of some contention. I don't consider Bioware's games to be RPGs, and I don't consider 'RPG' to be an appropriate description of the gameplay in so-called JRPGs, but I am in the minority on that.
antisocialfatman 9 months ago
@antisocialfatman Very well then, thanks for the explanation, and thanks for keeping up these reviews, just the fact that you argument every statement allready gives me a reason to like them. :)
MisterAAnderson 9 months ago
@antisocialfatman thats right. There more like action adventure that are turn based games. But, they are still cool games.

I really like Bioshock, but I found it more disturbing than frightening. It didn't have the sense of dread that SS2 had. SS2 definitely deserves a remake, providing they keep the original elements intact.

I would prefer Bioshock, if my computer could handle it...

@antisocialfatman but i looooooooooooooove deus ex
MrJLaza 1 year ago
@MrJLaza It's not really better than Deus Ex. Deus Ex has everything SS 2 does minus the horror and a whole lot more besides, including better storytelling.
gilgamesh310 1 year ago
@MrJLaza Probubly because after Looking Glass studios disolved (one of the studios that developed this game) Many of the employees went to work for Ion Storm, the developer of Deus Ex.
sacul125 1 year ago
@MrJLaza
it has a deeper action rpg component, and is faster paced... but I would argue that the Deus Ex world and story are better.

Ive actually been planning on getting this game for quite sometime, I only really heard of it from the escapists bioshock review. Though finding the game now it costs almost as much as it did when it was new.

One thing I never understood about both system shock 2 and bioshock is why the hell the main character is able to see ghosts. It's a very good way of telling the story but there doesn't seem to be much of an explanation as to why he's able to do it.
gilgamesh310 1 year ago
@gilgamesh310 It's actually explained in both games. In SS2 they are 'psychic echoes' to which your cyber rig is sensitive. In BioShock it's something to do with possessing the memories of others by using their adam or something.
I buy into the SS2 explanation for sure. Not so sure about the BS explanation.
antisocialfatman 1 year ago
@antisocialfatman Yeah I remember hearing the half arsed explanation for it in bioshock from one of the audio logs but that's exactly what it was - half arsed. I can't remember any explanation about it in SS2 but I suppose Ive only played through it once a good while ago and can't remember some things about it.
gilgamesh310 1 year ago
@antisocialfatman
I agree that the SS2 explanation is better but there both stupid and illogical explanations in my opinion
imbadatnames390 1 year ago
@imbadatnames390 Maybe, but consider that in SS2, there is telekinesis and telepathy. In that word, I find the idea of a 'psychic echo' quite credible.
It is sort of like how the smell of a perfume can linger in a room long after the woman has left, except it is for emotion, and only people attuned to psyonics can see them.
I get why you don't like it, but I think it's good.

imbadatnames390 1 year ago
