You know, there seems to be a lack of creativity in the comments here. So many people just saying the same thing. It seems like not much thought went into them. Blah blah blah. And that David guy in the Psalms, zero talent. It's just "praise the Lord, praise the Lord." Really overrated.
I find it interesting he said he wanted the song as "corporate" as possible. ??? I don't get this christian formula that all these christian artists conform to... Jesus would never conform to anything corporate. Write a song that is original and stands on its own... that is organic and real. Geez
@guitarblowfish, Rootedst hit it rite on da head...as a worship leader we have to right/sing music in our churches that everyone can join n and sing for a time of corporate worship through music...to do this the lyrics and music have to be what i like to call the 3 S's...Simple, Singable and Scriptural. Hope this helps
@zachattack5150 the 2nd guitarist does kinda have the expression of Why am I here? LOL:-) @ one point he threw in sum harmonies and then he just gave up
so are we making worship songs to please God simply, or is the song made for everyone to understand and come with a praise to God? its something we should ask ourselves about the purpose or situation for our songs are made for
but i wouldn't called these lyrics shallow lol if so we would call half of psalms in the bible shallow. im just glad we are doing an effort to make "new" songs and i quote new because its very hard for us to be original.
good thought, yet i dont know how many artists create their music to be simple purposefully... and how many artists create their lyrics simply because they have a catchy tune....
new song unto the Lord, joyful noise to the Lord..... its as the Lord sees i guess
yeah agree, we can only observe their songs from the outside because we cant assume that they didnt think deeply about it. we cant really judge, because our judgment is not perfect. do your best to offer what you have both mind and spirit. Paul ask us to be conscious of our praise that we do things with careful thought as well as the spirit
trust me this issue is something that concerns me too. and it sparks an interest for me to make songs to have deep meaning both lyric and music. its a constant question we must ask ourselves. for example, does this song need a solo? does it need me to sing at a certain key for a different feeling, should i play a song with complex chords? why am i doing what doing?
everything is very important, especially that you are offering something to the King of Kings XD lol but im sure you know that!
The lyrics aren't shallow.... but rather the lyrics aren't original. I can think of 20 other christian songs that sound the same or similar. It's the cookie cutter approach that must christian artists conform to that I have a problem with.
yeah its interesting that you mention about simplicity, and its something my group is trying to get away from. but David Crowder once said that people like simplicity unfortunately.

why are so many contemporary worship songs so shallow in their lyrics?

I agree, Where are the great artists like Steve Camp and Rich Mullins? Seems like it is more about the look and sound than the words.

@trekkerjc Listen to Shane and Shane or Phil Wickham.
Shane and Shane have deeper lyrics.
