The shot was not thin. It took off on a VERY high trajectory. Considering the leanth of the hole and the fact hes hitting a 5-6 iron.
I will say Davis has a great swing thats got much tighter over the years. I think he would have won more majors if his hand werent set so high at the top. But he seems to have fixed that over the years.
Don't really understand the "over-the-top" comments; Davis has always been one of the best out there at letting his shoulders follow the swinging of his arms. Put another way, he's very good at letting his shoulders stay turned and his right side stay soft and back at the outset of the downswing, while his arms and the club swing down on the right path. Not that he's not capable of OTT in a bad swing, but I don't see it here.
Freeze late in the downswing and you'll see his shoulders square to or slightly closed to the initial line of flight, while the lower body is slightly open; this is as close to universal among great ballstrikers as it gets. Go look at slo-mo of Hogan and you'll see his shoulders still closed immediately before impact too, despite all the modern-day gurus who insist on the shoulders being well open at impact.
How are you determining that it's "thin"? With many of the modern balls, a solid hit sounds about like that--too hard and harsh for my ear, but still solid.
basically he windes his body up enough to produce a nice bit of shoulder turn and when he starts his downswing he starts it from the hips, which means his hands are behind him (lag) which produces a good club head speed and it's whipping through the ball not sweeping, even with an 80% backswing it doesnt matter, the last 30% of the downswing is where you get the club headspeed and distance from... great swing
thanks alot.. been playing for about 4 years... it's easier said than done though :P, this swing, you can learn alot from :) theres minimal amounts of things that can go wrong with shorter back swings and good tempo, you can stay on line easier and you can get a better feel for your swing coming through
Nice fantasy analysis, but a skewed and incomplete view of what Love and his father were always trying to do with his swing as he learned it. Once can always superimpose a personal theory onto a swing where it doesn't belong. No offense.
Watch closely his lower body rotation before impact. Davis has also the longest arms on the PGA TOUR (or close to it) so even if his swing looks short...his hands are actually very far from him at the top of his backswing.
Should clarify--I really love it with the irons particularly. Sometimes he's a little loose in the legs with the longer clubs, esp. driver, and esp. with the left knee. But that's just comparing with a model of perfection. Functionally, this guy was one of the best two or three players in the world for a brief time. And listen to the sound of that contact on this shot...
I think that announcer is jacking off to dl3. click 4 repeatedly and let video finish

@emncaity
Also, right up until impact, notice the right forearm under the left, not dominating and over--also a universal position among great strikers.

@18imnot are you fucking kidding me, how the fuck can you tell if that was thin, have you actually ever seen the pros in real life?
