Saw her literally channel her father during a performance in Sacramento, CA years ago. I could not believe what I was hearing coming out of her voice. There was stunned silence in the audience. I literally had goosebumps and the temperature was about 103 degrees at an outdoor venue! Had to check with my sister to make sure that she heard the same thing I did. She did. She said because of her love for Luther, this song will always be in her set list.
It saddens me that the music industry has become so commercial and glossy to the point where a Diamond of an artist like Lalah Hathaway is not appreciated in the mainstream market. I am a professional musician and I absolutely love Lalah. She uses her voice in the same way an instrumentalist would...the texture...the colors...OMG! If you haven't bought every one of her CD's you are sleepin' big time! We almost don't even deserve Lalah in the US. Wake UP AMERICA!
She hardly knew her dad becuase he died so young but lets face it..she learns more about him every day she sings! She is as gifted as he was and her sound and phrasing are UNIQUE!
It is a true tragedy for this woman to lose her father and for us to miss out on all the great music he would have made. So glad she got it from her daddy.
I am sure being lalah and how lovely she is----SHE PRACTICED WITH THE DRUMMER A FEW TIMES BEFORE! He was probably doing what she told him to do. These are professionals remember...they know what they want! THE WHOLE PERFORMANCE WAS AWESOME AND EVEN THE DRUMMER...NICE MAN!
I'm a drummer and I know something about sound engineering. Did it ever cross anyone's mind that recording isn't exactly a studio recording?
Maybe whoever recorded this was close to the drummer. The drummer played pretty close to what was recorded on the album originally and Lalah doesn't seem straining to hear from the stage monitors. With a live performance it's all in the engineering, acoustics, mic placement, etc....
Lalah is amazing as usual. But the drummer is over the top. A woman with such talent deserves to be heard and the drums should compliment not over power.
Lalah Hathaway is awesome. I've been a fan since her first CD. Her voice is beautiful, and I've always wondered why people like herself isn't more popular?
Required listening for all vocal students! I don't care what kind of music you are studying. If you want to learn religion, pick up the Bible, Torah, Quo ran. You want to learn singing, better study this sister!
I play drums as well......I was thinking it was just me thinking that....but yeah he need to calm all the way down and slow it down a couple of clicks.....feels like he's rushing her
I am a die hard Lelah fan. You gotta hear what she did on the Earth Wind and Fire Interpretations joint. A killer! Im sorry but that drummer in this video is playin too damn loud and fast. I wanna slap his store front church soundin behind.
"love's holiday" she killed it. I've never heard a EWF song redone sooo perfectly. OMG, that is mah favorite song n da world! it wuz on mah myspace 4 da longest! lol
I keep coming back to this video, this performance...she is a seriously talented woman. I never in a million years thought I'd like anybody's performance more than Luther's, but she's turned it into something new. The places she takes it at the very end (c. 6:00) kill me!
Lalah's voice reminds me of hot chocolate and caramel drizzled over a warm decadent brownie after a delicious soulfood meal. In other words....This woman ain't no joke!!!
It's like the music industry allows only one contralto at at time. Their was Anita in the 80's and than Toni in the 90's. Lalah should have blew up big just like those ladies (who I love too.) Oh well, we her dedicated following will continue to support her.
I was a huge fan of her daddy Donnie, she has embodied the sprit of her dad truly the world is blessed with her pressance. We luv Lalah, don't stop gracing the world with this awsome gift from God!Truly, Ms. Bertha.
I love Lalah's voice. It is so rich and smooth. Alot of artists got together and did a tribute to Luther, including this song by Lalah. It is titled "Forever For Always For Luther". It is a great album if you are a jazz lover or just a lover of good music.
Starrfly,I know what you mean, her soultry voice is one of a kind....she is much too underrated...but aren't most of the great singers nowadays:-)????
You took the words right out of my mouth. Shouting doesn't equate beauty. I got tired of being shouted at when I listened to the radio. Needless to say, I don't listen to the radio anymore.
yo i was at this concert she blew it away if you have never saw her perform in person plese go see her...Donny is smiling from the heavens..how hott would it have been had he still be with us for them to du a song together!!!
WOW! Luther said that?! Now that's respect! And to whoever said contraltos are underrated, you are absolutely correct! This is coming from a contralto singer who was highly in fluenced by Lalah...
That's NOT E. Seats on drums!!! lololololol
