Eating Cobra Heart in Hanoi, Vietnam

Yup, I've eaten the live, beating snake heart. Much to the surprise of my family. I would say the Vietnamese prize taste over texture. They don't seem to mind gristle and bones as much as Westerners do.. Your comments about Vietnamese politics are right on. However, I don't think real change will happen in our lifetimes. Perhaps in our children's lifetimes.

Hello, thanks for the comment. I had a list of things I wanted to eat while I was traveling. I had seen this on shows like Bizarre Food and No Reservations. I knew it would be a memorable experience and Vietnam would be the only place to do it. Did I appreciate it more that the snake was "scarified" in front of me? Not really, but that wasnt the point. Yes, its very safe in Vietnam, I traveled there 3 weeks by myself. However, you must be mindful of scams. They will constantly try to take you for money no matter what the situation. Might be a good idea to travel to Thailand and Cambodia before making your way to Vietnam, but at any rate you will quickly learn how to avoid scams once you get there. Also, everything must be bargained for, as nothing has a set price, even in the pharmacies LOL.

I really don't know if it was farm raised or not, but believe me your average person is not sitting around eating snake everyday. This meal costs $70 USD, which is probably about 3 months salary for the average Vietnamese person. This country is so poor they eat whatever they can find; therefore frogs, snakes, insect, etc have become part of the traditional diet.
