This is not the original intro as I saw it in many epsiodes. Either this one is a shortened version or it is taken from later seasons.
In the original intro, the saxophone was also better used (remember, less is more). In the original, it would start somewhere in a forest with trees being felled, transported to the paperfactory and then you would see how the paper became a newspaper through various phases.
And yes, the fresh newspaper ended at the bottom of someone's bird cage.
@AudieHolland This intro sequence is from season 2, and was only used for that particular season (1978-79). Seasons 3 through 5 used the same intro, but with a different arrangement of the theme, which was updated each year.
The original intro you are thinking of was used for just season 1 (1977-78), which consisted of 22 episodes. That is also the intro I prefer the most.
I was lucky enough to meet Mr.Mason Adams(Who played "Mr.Charlie Hume"on the show)in NYC years ago..a sweet, kindly and caring gentleman. It's sad that we lost him years ago.
One of my favorite shows growing up...I loved Lou Grant...And I had someone tell me a few years ago that I sounded just like Mason Adams, the man who played Lou's boss. He was the voice of Smuckers for so many years, rest his soul.
Newspapers don't work with cublicles even today I'd think. Otherwise, how can the chief editor shout across the room to another editor or journalist to change the front page again?
I just recently saw a Curb Your Enthusiasm episode with a grumpy Ed Asner, answering Larry David after he asked about a custom in Japan "how the hell should I know, they could take it up the ass for all I know in Japan"

We need to get rid of cubicles and go back to giant offices like the one on this show.

@sageofsuccess Open offices with no cubicles. Back when employees were treated like adults.

i liked the opening where you follow the life of the paper, and it ended up on the bottom of the bird cage better.
