It takes my 2.0 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo laptop 43:00 minutes to export a 1080p 3 minute long movie! But my desktop it takes 30 seconds to export the same movie.
@beepsbobby1 By "full feature" do you mean a 2 hour HD movie? I wouldn't recommend using the Air for something like that. The RAM and SSD storage limitations would really hurt you. It probably could be done, but it would be a frustrating editing process.
@beepsbobby1 Matt is correct... There is more data in raw files than the final version... All digital movies have raw files in the 10 to 20GB per second. Compared to fraps average of 4GB per minute. And we are not talking 4k either.
To everyone wondering. The most recent music video on my youtube was created solely using the macbook air. Not just the normal cutting and placing. But everything from organizing to coloring.
This machine is incredibly strong and surpasses what a lot of people are thinking that it can do.
I know a lot of people would love if you do this: take a 1 minutes 1080p clip export it with the air, and have a download link in the description so we can test it on final cut on our computers to know if it's worth picking up. Please please do that! They didn't have an i7 at my apple store so I couldnt test . Please!
@MattsMacintosh Hey Matt, I've got to ask are you using a special lens or something different? Because everything just looks 'different' when you are panning ... almost seems like you're using something like a fisheye lens .. or maybe it's just the angle you are shooting at ... or I'm mental lol
@MattsMacintosh I think the new MB Air was fast due to the HD3000. Obviously the HD3000 doesn't have enough horse power to play latest games, but for encoding/decoding video it performs relatively better, even when compared to $500.00 cards.
dude. haha my 2010 MBP 8gb Ram is slower. and every time i try to export / upload Quicktime H.264 to youtube from fcpx. it has crappy audio. please help?
@enzyme20056 Its 1080p ProRes video being converted to H.264. The project file was 3GB and the final was 150MB. Trust me, these times are really fast. I remember a similar export/render taking 20 minutes on a Core Duo machine.
@MattsMacintosh I think the new gen macbook air have finally arrived, do you have the old mb air to compare , people have been saying they are slow and the hard drives are hopeless.
@MattsMacintosh oh right, but you moved your computer and everything, please feel free to check out my channel, i see you as a videographer to aspire to! Maybe another setup video?
@MattsMacintosh why are you packing it up? btw, im a big fan of your videos, man, you got talent... incredible sense for the camera... keep up the awesome work! : ))
@bobslim it is true that the imac uses the i3 i5 and i7 processors in their desktops but this doesnt really matter due to the fact that these processors are powerful enough for the average user and the user who does things like photoshop final cut and other processor munching tasks. What would be nice would be if apple made a mini mac pro, but this is just me dreaming!
@imbored200 The iMac is an all-in-one computer (meaning the monitor is built into the computer itself) and is meant for general home use like surfing the web, playing music/videos and viewing photos.
The Mac Pro on the other hand, is a full desktop where the computer is separate from the monitor. The Mac Pro is not for every day home use but is meant for people who need a lot more power for things like video editing, high graphic gaming, etc.
The iMac is sold for $999 and the Mac Pro for $2200+
@imbored200 4, 8, 12 Cores, 4 HDD slots, awesome GPU (you can change it), no display (obviously).
Its a computer for the professional market (Pro) its much expensive then the iMac but it runs super fast.
But the mac pros are getting older, apple is suposed to update them in a VERY near future (once imacs and macbook pros already have quadcores), they are WAY too expensive for what they offer, for nowadays standards.
Really cool video Matt! The fact that Apple packed so much power into such a portable device. The export time wasn't comparable to the Mac Pro, but it's much better than what I experience on my Dad's iMac! Also, what lens did you use for this video? Was it a wide-angle lens?
@sc0pl355 still, an i7 2600k overclocked to 4.5ghz will also reach the same speed of that mac pro, build a pc with similar spes or higher and it will only be 1500$ instead of 3000$+
@rubix63 Once again, you're comparing a new processor to a workstation that was last updated a year ago. Also, Xeons (!) aren't necessarily supposed to be the fastest processors in the world. They are supposed to run at capacity over long periods of time. If you built a computer with a i7 2600 or i7 990x rig and ran it at max load for 6-12 months non-stop, WITHOUT overclocking them, your rig would go tits up while the Mac Pro can go up to three years under that same stress.
Also whether you use water cooling or not, your computer will not be able to handle being at full load 24/7 for a year. Your parts are not built for that. That's why Xeons typically cost more than consumer processors. the same for server-grade hard drives that cost twice as much as consumer-lever hard drives.
@jaggedspikerespawn It does to me too. My point is that the Mac Pro price isn't as irregular as some people seem to think and workstations are not the same as consumer computers.
It takes my 2.0 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo laptop 43:00 minutes to export a 1080p 3 minute long movie! But my desktop it takes 30 seconds to export the same movie.

"build a pc with similar spes or higher and it will only be 1500$ instead of 3000$+"
The Mac Pro is an OEM workstation. The price it has is quite common for machines of that type.
HP Z600:
2X Xeon X5650, firepro 2270 512mb, 6 gigs of 1333 ram, 1 tb hard drive, Linux
$5,312
Mac Pro:
Same processors, Radeon HD 5770 1GB, same amount and speed of ram, same size and speed of hard drive, OSX
$4,999
