  • one survivor was interview in the wonderful terrible life of Lennie Riefenstahl. She stated that she was young an nieve at the time. But it wasn'tjust Riefenstahl or Harlan that passivelly contributed to the murder. The stock market. The traditional prejudice in europe. The large percentage of germans wanting a quick answer. Hitler taking advantage of that. The cowardly passive. This is why t.c.m. wont show these films, unless it has international appeal.I critisize them about this

  • When Miss Riefenstahl completed her film after the war,She was too old for the role by that time, But she was able to hide it I guess. This movie looks more like Spain Heimat style. Too much of a Germanesc feel. It's unlikely turner classic movie's would never play it. After video copy rights ran out. cause of the concentration campers who were used in it . They are politically correct against ever showing any more films of 33 and 45. Not even Ruble or Heimat. Cause of Hitler

  • @mikemcgee Yes, the extras were largely gypsies from a concentration camp; needless to say, none of them got paid but the did get something ELSE.

After the filming, at least half of them didn't have to go back to the concentration camp; they went to DEATH CAMPS instead.

Refenstahl, of course, stated that she didn't know this.

  • great movie

  • I wonder what she would have done with the "Film Noir" camerawork taking place toward the end of WWII? She revered the artistry of black and white photography.

  • great film maker evil horrible woman , used children as extras in her film latter sent to death camps . if their is a hell she is in it

  • @bearcub410 God granted her longevity of 102 years and a talent people all over the world worshipped.

You made this idiotic statement as if you yourself had"witnessed" it. Or did you always believe 100% whatever you read? That speaks volume of your IQ level, which can never even touch base within a half or even a third of hers!

I am a huge Chinese fan of Leni, and I can easily say that you are poorly educated and it shows in your lousy English.

  • @xingsheng1 Leni riefenstahl was a great film maker i will grant you that , but as a human being she was a total zero and a swine !!!!! and as far as believing everything i read i do not , i don't believe one word of what you have said !!!!! HA HA HA

  • @xingsheng1 It is true. She did employ children who later died in the camps. The evidence is summarised in 'Leni' by Steven Bach, (Little Brown, 2007, pages 294-295.). She eventually admitted this and Bach quotes her admission. Your abuse of bearcub410 does nothing to alter the facts. You owe him/her an apology.

  • @orglancs Listen to yourself: "...she employed children who LATER died in the camps." That's the base of your accusation? I once tutored a little girl who LATER was abused by her teacher and commited suicide, so I was responsible for her death? Maybe I am too dumb to see your logic.

But waste no more saliva, we will worship this great woman no matter what you try to tarnish her reputation.

  • @xingsheng1 But these children were already in detention camps and were therefore forced labour, even if days outside filming were better than days in the camps. You can't squirm out of the fact that LR's morality was extremely dubious and she was a radiantly happy supporter of the Fuehrer. Triumph of the WIll says it all, a blatant hymn to fascism and naked authoritarianism. I am not trying to tarnish her reputation. I am trying to ascertain the facts.

  • Der arme boese Wolf...

  • AH instrument of God, and Leni instrument of AH.

  • @yoursinrock5 Woah woah woah...Stop the presses! Hold everything! Some know-nothing saw a documentary on their television and has no "comapassion" for Leni Riefenstahl! I repeat: no compassion for her! Let's just all be thankful that YouTube has given yet another genius a proper forum with which to discuss their profound revelations!

  • @TKMTrotter no no no, you´re getting it all wrong. he was mistaking riefenstahl with zack snyder :) (who, in his defense - i hear - has been officially nominated as hollywood´s leni riefenstahl.)

  • this opera TIEFLAND is a bore........but LENI was a genius .

  • i love Leni, the only real true genius

  • Based on the book "Terra baixa" of Angel Guimerà, a catalan writer in catalan language

  • with a Catalan pen and some Catalan paper on a Catalan table?

    Att.

  • Gisela Schneeberger was right.

  • From the producer:

Hardly any animals were killed during the making of this film.

  • Considering the nazi occultism surrounding her I wonder if this scene in her mind might have spawned from fenrir and tyr? you know the story of Tyr's arm in fenrirs mouth. She is a wonderful and spectacular film maker regardless of what side of the fence she is on.

  • Thank you for this video, I like its musical score, worth of appreciation.

  • She was such a great artist with the most amazing visual sense. No one has ever created such magnificent paintings on film before-or since.

  • I think it wasn´t kill; wikipedia tells:

The wrestling scene of Eichberger with the only half-tamed wolf was supervised by Bernhard Grzimek (german director of zoo)

  • As usual, Wikipedia is wrong. 2 trained wolves died, and then the scene was shot using a dog.

  • things were realistic in those days . Did they really kill a wolf for this film?

  • One often hears about what an important filmmaker Riefenstahl was. But then why are Tiefland and Underwater Impressions so hard to find? Where can one buy them?

  • The reason may very well be, that she was visually important but ideologically dubious: She invented what was to become the nazi-esthetic and for "Tiefland", she used Sinti and Roma from a nearby concentration-camp as extras. And sent them back to the concentration-camp into a sure death after the film was finished. It is hard to deal with such films and it is hard to deal with her past.

  • I know about these things. In fact, this reminds me of a really bad joke I heard years ago. A co-worker of mine said "Riefenstahl is having trouble finishing her underwater film because she can't get the fish to sieg heil." But some of her films are easy to find.

  • Why is everyone thumbs downing this message, mugwump is simply replying to someone who asked why her films aren't easily available. It's the same reason the BBC hasn't released much of Spike Milligan's work, despite him being a comic genius: a lot of his work is politically incorrect (and sometimes better for it).

It is however questionable why you can still get DW Griffiths Birth of a Nation but not any of Leni's work. I guess there's a difference between the racism in the USA & Nazi Germany!
