I just bought some play sand at a hardware store here in Texas, I gave my 1st round of cleaning today, will rinse it nightly until thursday and place it in my experimental 10 gallon tank on Friday. I will post a before and after . But you can buy sand from the hardware store, you just have to rinse it very well!
I have the same question... And i am thinking of grabing some sand from the button of the sea and then clean it well... Do you think it would be a problem for my fishes????
i have a tank, it's fairly new and i really like the look of sand. Do you think it'd be possible to switch out my gravel for sand, or do you think i should just leave it alone.
nope, once it's all cleaned and rinsed through it doesn't require re-cleaning in the tank. To maintain it simply use a piece of hose or a gravel cleaner to pick up any much which will be sitting on the surface of the sand and occasionally use a chopstick or similar item to just run through the sand every now and again to stop air pockets from forming. :)
this was sand bought from an aquatics store - I wouldn't recommend buying it from hardware stores or scooping it off a beach.
This sand wasn't too expensive and isn't marine sand - if you want some just ask the guys in the store if they have any NON marine sand (I think marine sand is coral or silica but I'm not entirely sure so please don't quote me on that!)
Oh.. well thanks for the heads up on the marine sand content. My neighbor just bought a bunch of marine and he had some problems with cloudiness and particles because he didn't rinse it thoroughly because he did't know how or what to use.
well, with marine ideally marine sand should be used - it just requires a LOT of washing. To clean the sand for this latest aquarium (21UK gallons) took approx 2.5 hours.
Yucky it look like pee pee

@bandito974 make sure it doesnt have that chemical to keep cats from crapping in it. that will kill your fish no matter how much you clean it.

a lot of people simply dump the sand straight in - this video is basically showing how well you need to clean the sand.
The water should be running clear if the sand is clean but as you can see its rather yellow and nasty.

after cleaning the sand, do you have to clean the sand once its been in the tank?

Did you buy that sand from a fish store or just found it in the wild or something? They do make marine sand for aquariums but its quite expensive...
