A car should be driven by it's driver, not by a computer. I suggest you really consider getting the car, don't reject it just because it want's to be driven like how a car should be driven.

While theres a lot of pride for American cars, short circuit race is focused on acceleration and cornering, so mustang had the environment issue. If you bring exige to america and fought on high speed race, mustang can beat it easily.
so, jeremy clarkson is comparing a little lotus to a 4 seater, ford mustang that even has a boot(trunk). forget if they are in the same price range, this is not a good matchup. its like comparing an arm wrestling match between prince william and chuck norris.
of course you basic mustang just won't do. I'd go with a Boss block with the 800+ hp upgrade from the Ford factory, with all your normal additions (cold air intake, strut braces, sway bar, lowering springs, etc).
stupid video...the lotus is an exotic tuner...perfect for a circuit race. A mustang is a muscle car, perfect for dragging or drifting. Anything will beat a mustang off the line but give it a 1/4 mile straightaway and a mustang can overtake or get close to overtaking anything...

im a fan of both the lotus and the mustang. this was a while ago and speaking from whitnessing a race the more recent mustangs like the boss and even just the normal v8 all have much improved suspension and the boss was actually featured in top gears ultimate supercar challenge becaus ethey loved it so much. the shelby gt and boss are the mustangs ford made for lovers of performance, not whatever car they just used. BOTH are great cars.

The Lotus is an outstanding car as well as the Mustang. However they are in two completely different classes. A Lotus is made for the track, the Mustang is made for driving around town and straight line races. Not to mention the price for a Mustang is much more reasonable for the everyman! Both are excellent cars in their own right.

I love top gear... but as I always say they either pretend not to understand what a muscle car is for or they really don't get it. A nice stang vs. an engineered track race car. The mustang is for people who work every day at a real job and don't often get to an alpine road or a race track. Muscle cars are affordable, fast off the line, look great, and are a bunch of fun. Maybe not brilliant engineering, but fun. Horses for courses... Mustang is a street legend, Lotus is a costly track car
The Exige S is approximately $75,000. The Mustang is about 1/3rd the price. Me thinks there is some bias there somewhere.
One has to wonder how a $55,000 Mustang Shelby GT500 with $20,000 of tire and suspension mods would compare or even the $41,000 Boss 302 with $34,000 of modifications.

Liters aren't everything. Even tho the 5.0 is bigger, it weighs less than the M3's 4.0, burns 25% less fuel, 22% less CO2 emissions and the extra power/torque available right off of idle makes it worth the while. Plus its lower compression and octane requirements means it can be tuned for much more. What's the point of smaller engines again? watch?v=uOwSPccbzl4 watch for a real comparison
It's like every year Mustangs get more HP which means a bigger engine so more weight and they also get a different paint job, however all this power a weight added on means they need better suspension and brakes which is never improved on in Mustangs. Americans are obsessed with bigger more powerful machines but fail to understand that you need to something to control it all a good example of this is the Mustang and thats really all there is to it.

And probably never driven a Lotus let alone a Ferrari. I am a Mustang fan (Ive owned a few) because I'm not rich, I drive on roads, not race tracks, and when I look under the hood I find something I can actually work on. It's a cool car, but the only problem I have, is that Lotus has to use a Toyota engine... why don't they develop their own? To me, their no more than a chassis company – no different than Lola. So that whole "Great British Engineering" Jeremy praises is a bit of a stretch. British engineering, with help of major Japanese grunt is more like it.

@mtalley1 The Zonda is powered by a Mercedes engine, the Spyker C8 is powered by the same engine they put in the RS4, the Ascari A10 is powered by an old BMW engine and the list could go on. Now, would you call Pagani, Spyker and Ascari "chassis companies" ?
That exact point is proven by Clarkson here, check out the Mustang: big, shouty, powerful V8, but it handles like a shopping trolley full of logs.
Conclusion: handling is much more important than power.

The Lotus is an outstanding car as well as the Mustang. However they are in two completely different classes. A Lotus is made for the track, the Mustang is made for driving around town and straight line races. Not to mention the price for a Mustang is much more reasonable for the everyman! Both are excellent cars in their own right.

Almost 20 years ago, you could get a lotus esprit four cylinder that would do 170 mph easily, and with leather interior and a.c.!!!!!!! look at "lotus fast and furious" on youtube for the S4 that does almost 170-----that car is a 1994 four cylinder with a factory chargecooler and turbo!

Unfortunately you will likely never see the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 LS on Top Gear. Well, ... maybe if the track is wet.
It is an amazingly fast track car that will dog cars costing 3 to 5 times as much.
It is not politically correct in Europe to have an American Car perform that well so they will just sweep it under the rug and pretend it doesn't exist.
It's kinda like the 2012 Z06 or ZR1 with the new Pilot Sport Cup tires. Don't expect Top Gear to test them. NOT PC!

I love top gear... but as I always say they either pretend not to understand what a muscle car is for or they really don't get it. A nice stang vs. an engineered track race car. The mustang is for people who work every day at a real job and don't often get to an alpine road or a race track. Muscle cars are affordable, fast off the line, look great, and are a bunch of fun. Maybe not brilliant engineering, but fun. Horses for courses... Mustang is a street legend, Lotus is a costly track car

The Exige S is approximately $75,000. The Mustang is about 1/3rd the price. Me thinks there is some bias there somewhere.
One has to wonder how a $55,000 Mustang Shelby GT500 with $20,000 of tire and suspension mods would compare or even the $41,000 Boss 302 with $34,000 of modifications.

Liters aren't everything. Even tho the 5.0 is bigger, it weighs less than the M3's 4.0, burns 25% less fuel, 22% less CO2 emissions and the extra power/torque available right off of idle makes it worth the while. It's like every year Mustangs get more HP which means a bigger engine so more weight and they also get a different paint job, however all this power a weight added on means they need better suspension and brakes which is never improved on in Mustangs. Americans are obsessed with bigger more powerful machines but fail to understand that you need to something to control it all a good example of this is the Mustang and thats really all there is to it.

you know what that lotus isnt even in the same class same class as the mustang. there is a big diff in weight. Ok the mustang weighs almost 2 1/2 times the weight of the lotus. And all lotus I have seen are slower then dirt. do a rematch with the new mustang 5.0 with a supercharger one it make them have the same upgrades and we'll then. Peace posers.
