Good video, cheered me up after the fiasco of the World Cup. I agree that Joe Cole's goal should be in there, but also Bobby Charlton's against Mexico. Have a look at his his supreme balance when running with the ball, the little check dummy and sidestep to move it out from his feet and then a thunderous, emphatic finish. The kind of shot that when he hit it, he probably thought, "Get fucking in there, you c***t." Or words to that effect anyway.

I think John Barnes's goal against brazil is at least one of the best, if not the best of all. He was a player of rare quality, and the current side has no one at the same level. However, I'm sure the current English team can do well, and progress in the WC games (they gave themselves hard times in the group stage, but they'll play better - there's no other choice).

His fame did get him the role model status that you're talking about, but on the other side, he does have some skills that make him stand out as a winger. There's no doubt that Shaun and Aaron (and even Theo) have incredible pace on the pitch, but they still lack that final, decisive pass that Beckham could deliver perfectly. The man could find a needle in a hay anytime, anywhere.
