  • wow i just cried... love this guy.

  • I prefer David's , a little more his own and less *try hard* Matt's was wonderful but this one flows better, for me. Well done !!! This is my favorite song of all time.

  • Roberta Flack sung this song but it wasn't by her. Look it up. It was an old folk song.

  • Beautiful Man Beautiful voice Beautiful song KLM

  • Very nice.

  • def one of my favorite idols. go david

  • David's voice blows me away....that last note especially is incredible! "The first time ever I saw your face", David, I fell in love - along with the first time ever I heard your voice!! One of the few singers who can bring me to tears with his beautiful voice, either singing or talking for that matter...

  • 3 years later and i still listen to this song like he performed it yesterday! he's my #1 idol, in my opinion!

  • i love david 's version it has full of emotions, he felt it, he's singing this song to a very special person,he sang it as if it was his own

matt's version his voice is kinda thin, he is singing this to the judges that's why he's nervous. ^_^

  • this is the most unique and beautiful revival i have ever heard....hes really my idol...

  • My favorite David Cook performance. Hands Down!

  • comparing this performence to Matt's !

Matt will absolutely smash David's no doubt

  • oboy oversang it

  • Who are the 20 retards that hit dislike......

  • it's RobertA Flack. thought you should know.

  • David always sounds confident and looks professional. His version is beautiful and he definately has a great voice. I went to listen to this Matt and all I could think of was....you got to be kidding me...

  • While both versions are great, David's is pretty much note perfect where Matt sounds like he's not quite hitting the right notes a lot of the time.

  • Matt who? LOL!

But seriously, I know who he is. Now it's time for him to get on with his career, as Mr. Cook has done. Best of luck to him, he will need it with the current music climate.

  • Prefer Matt Cardles.

  • @artistrichardanthony

The singer is Roberta Flack... Not Roberto...

  • Doesn't Matt have his own video to comment on? He did fine for his range and interpretation - maybe Matt Cardle fans could go find 'his' video and say that you like it?

There seems to be a pattern of other people's fans coming to David Cook's videos and 'trying' to downgrade his performance to make their people look better. It's been going on for two years, and it still can't be done.

Silly people, the only thing being proved, over and over, is that David is the standard of excellence.

  • If you want to see David Cook in action in his chosen genre, put - david cook man in the box shawnee - in search box of youtube and watch the first video that comes up. It's a great cover that he did on his Declaration Tour. You won't be disappointed.

  • Cardle & Cook versions - Both very well done. Lets leave it at that :o)

  • Thank you, Mr. Cook, for doing this song in such a touching & emotional way. I'll be looking forward to the release of your next album. (By the way, your first was fantastic. Congratulations on selling over 1.3 million albums.)

  • David held the audience at the palm of his hand while he sang this. No one was breathing, LOL. Seriously though, he sounded fantastic. Even Hilary Clinton loved it. :)

  • Who is Matt Cardle and why aren't his fans watching his own vids instead of dissing someone else's?

  • Beautiful performance by David Cook. I could listen to this over and over.

  • I'm sorry but David Cook could sing round circles Matt Cardle.

This is more of a powerful performance than his.

  • @ChemicalCorruption I am not agree. Yes, I love Matt's version of song, but David sung this song more powerfull and more emotional thatn Matt.

  • @IInneetta That's what I said. I said David Cook sang this more powerfully than Matt -.-

  • @ChemicalCorruption Oh yeah, I'm sorry.

  • woah. all of these comments are comparing him to matt cardle. They're completely different artists. plus David did it first and Matt did a longer version.

  • He sings this song so BEAUTIFULLY !

  • I miss you David, this afternoon I spend my watching your performances again and thanks to you tube for this, one of my best moment is when I'm watching you singing and when you won this AI..

  • if i was sitting behind the woman id be freaked

  • Matt cardle shown david up, BIG TIME

  • wow!!!!

  • i love david and his voice is just so gorgeous to listen to, but being unbiased, matt's version of this song was in a different league. absolutely unbelievable.

  • I think Matt's version is completely different and you honestly can't compare both singers. Both Great! But I am a cookie fan until the end of times :)

Hope Matt wins though! He is the best one on that show!!!

  • @mandybmth concurred

  • Matt Cardle knocked this out the park and is in a different league to David Cook, no disrespect.

  • hey guyz check out Matt Cardle's version!! u'll be loving it

  • @lediep89 Matts version is one million times better....! Matt is one of the finalist on x factor UK...! JUST LETTING YOU ALL KNOW BECAUSE YALL ARE AMERICAN THAT WATCH THIS VIDEO...!!!!

  • @jonniebio2009 umm i like matts version too but Cook will always be my choice... and no im not American

  • @Shereeda2202 You need either A: Ear training or B: An ear transplant :o) lol

  • @WeezabuzZ lol nah ..is just that cook will always be my favourite contestant for any kind of talent show... so im heavily biased..

but just so u knw.. i dl matt's version too and listen to it almost everyday since the day he sang on show :)

  • @WeezabuzZ well his version was one of the best... but u knw Cook's not generic ..he does have amazin vocals :)

  • @WeezabuzZ Hahaha. Sure. There are very few rock vocalists of Cook's caliber, period, much less loitering around karaoke bars. Please, it's one thing to prefer some obscure singer's version of a song to David's (and this song wasn't even his choice), but now you look ridiculous.

  • @shpei88 How on earth do i look ridiculous?!? lol.. Oh just leave it, i can't be arsed

  • @lediep89 1) this is better 2) that version sucks

  • @mangp woooo...i defnitely respect your opinion yet seeems like you belong to the 1% quantile here

    sorry mate

  • The song is originally by Roberta Flack not Roberto.... And she sings it the best!

  • I really liked David Cook on American Idol but I'm sorry - this version just doesn't come close to Matt Cardle's - I was blown away by Matt's version of this song and no other version is as good.

  • i think matt cradles was better, on xfactor

  • Better than the original.

  • This is the best cover version of this song.....that I have heard in a long time. Not even Leona Lewis or Celine Dion did as good a job as David. And he's singing live and not in a studio. I remember watching this on tv and being totally blown away by his performance.

  • @Chuckles123thefish He has an amazing voice but I prefer him in rock songs. In this particular one I believe celine dion is way better and even better than him is Matt Cardle from british Xfactor this year. Check him out!!! Amazing high pitch voice!!!

  • I would agree that Ms. Flack did indeed "make this song her own"! However you are incorrect in attributing the song to her! The song was written by the Scottish Folk Singer Mr. Ewan MacColl for his Wife to be Ms. Peggy Seeger! You might consider correcting your mis-information! 'Though I compliment you on the upload! Mr. George Michael also sings the song quite beautifully on his album

    "Songs From The Last Century"

  • I've just watched all of the versions of this song that I could find and Matt McCardle has something very raw and beautiful in his voice. It's a stunning song but Matt was the only artist that actually sounded like he meant every word of it. I'm hoping Danni puts him through tonight!

  • Brilliant rendition of the song....However I do think that Matt Cardle's (X Factor) is better.

  • @MasterBlasterMufc i just could agree more!!!

  • matt cardle's version from xfactor boot camp is soooo...much better than this...

  • Excellent rendition--though I wish he could have sung then entire song....

  • i love that high note in the end..... i try it... but i cant (T_T)

  • This is beautiful.

Where is David Cook I want to know, seriously I haven't followed musicians in a long time and I feel he has a special gift, yes a gift from God.

May God bless you David Cook wherever you are. :) Suzanne ~

  • wow,i missed this perfomance when it aired...glad i just caught it now..:)

  • Awesome!!!!

  • did he win?

    He needed to!

this was a beautiful rendetion to a beautiful song!

Simon always knows how to pick the best song for each of the best candidates

  • @1agaston yes he did he sang the song time of my life after he won.

  • The late Ewan Mc Coll, father of the late KIrsty McColl wtrote this song

  • Now that took my breath away!

  • He is really Amazing.A wonderfull voice!!!

  • This performance made me weep.

  • It's awesome how sweet and powerful his voice sounds at the same performance !

  • this is one of david cook's best performance imo.

  • This song was written by Ewan MacColl in 1957. Roberta Flack's performance is perhaps has the the most famous to date but she did not write it. I have to say that while I do do not doubt the virtuosity of this performance, it is not my favourite arrangement.

  • goosebumps, on top of goosebumps. love him

  • he says like "first time i ever thaw ur face" lmao love him!!! <3

  • Simon was smart choosing this song for him. He must have know what we did - David would kill it!

  • David's working on another CD to come out soon it would be great if he include first time ever4 I saw your face on it still love hearing his voice

  • did he win?

he is great this is the second song that i have heard from him and he is good!

  • Ok, This is almost perfect. Now where is the rest of it? Want to hear.

  • Ok, I came here to watch this dude completely demolish this classic, gorgeous tune, but holy hell did he take this to a new level for a male vocalist.

Straight up brohem, you have one of the best voices I've ever heard.

    WOW!!!

  • This is a gift, it just is...

  • There's so many conclusion, but, i'd read that Roberta Flack was the 1st singer of this song that written by a guy in 1957... so the original song waas sung by Roberta Flack...whateva....I love this song....

  • Yes the song was written by Ewan MacColl a folk political singer. He wrote the song as challenge by someone to see if he could write a love song without any politics in it.

  • damn, David, you moved me back then, I have not heard this in a long time, its so Great.

  • wow this man can sing. what a beautiful voice. its given me tingles down my spine.

  • the ending's soooo powerful!!!

  • He seriously gives me chills! So amazing

  • hahaha what can i say? hahaha 10 star not 5 star

  • This performance was/is such an amazing gift. I dont usually care for Simon but I have to thank him a million times over for giving this part of David to us that we may never have gotten otherwise. Truly touching and powerfully tender! LOVE IT!!

  • Good to hear a male singer do this song so well.

Sarah billington is amazing for a 15 yr old and she sings this song beautifully.

  • So heartbreaking! I'll Love David Forever!

  • gosh, i really like the way he glided his hand down the mic stand..,it melts me. ;-)

  • I love David Cook!!!!!!!

  • RobertA Flack. Not RobertO. Thanks for the vid though.

  • sem: your right. It also is not a Roberta Flack original. She was covering it too. This is one of the few men that cover it, when actually it was written by a man. Good job David

  • sang today!!!!!!!

  • This is so beautiful David. Thank You!

    And I will Love You,

    Always and Ever,

    Now and Forever.

    viewpoints3

  • that was nice...pity they always shorten the song!!! bulshit!!!

  • Jeffrey Gaines does a great cover of this song from his album "Always Be", very soulful.

  • Wow. He was so fucking original. Like the best idol.

  • @lovetakescourage1127

    thats attractive

  • @tascat67 Are you referring to my language? Ha sorry i had a potty mouth for a minute. My bad. But he is very original. I love him.

    :o)

  • @lovetakescourage1127 original? totally derivative

  • this is one of the most beautiful version of this song....david cook is awesome.

  • respect please

  • He is sublime vocalist! This is one of the glorious song ever. For me he is the best winner of all A.I.

Hope he will win grammy for BEST NEW ARTIST, coz he really deserve it! He is brand new shining star!

  • Oh wow! chills........how did I miss that episode???

  • Great teeth. And he can sing.

  • MAN,,,,HE ROCKS!!!!!

  • I just love the haunting sound he sings this was his best song ever but I like his other songs too

  • my favorite David Cook performance

check out his own performance of CREEP

    It will create goosebumps.

  • Wouldn't it be nice if Simon Cowell would invite the actual songwriter, who's lived in obscurity, to play his very own song? The songwriter is Lance "Sandy" Sandberg, PhD, who wrote this song for the lead singer in his band---she would fall for another. MCA bought his song, along with songwriter credits and all royalties from him for $25. Dr. Lance "Sandy" Sandberg, PhD, teaches at St. Phillips College in San Antonio, Texas. Please help the song's writer perform it on TV, before he dies.

  • What on earth are you talking about?

"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is a 1957 folk song written by Ewan MacColl for Peggy Seeger.

  • This is why he won!!!!!!!!

  • I'm sweating. He's hott

  • 0:55 Simon is like "Yeah, he wins" D: lol

  • Great job. Dave's a talented dude.

  • powerful and inspired!

  • his definitely awesome, the best.

  • is that american idol or something like that??

  • He's ever so sexy!

  • WOW!

  • His eyes are sparkling wonderfully at around 0:49 to 0:54 ...... truly a genuine, powerful moment......

  • by roberta flack. not roberto.

  • Holy goosebumps Batman!

This is my favorite performance from DC on AI.

That last note... holy hell it's perfect!

  • I love this! I wouldn't give 2 cents to hear Celine sing ANYthing!

  • Goose pimples!!!

  • Kind of weird hearing a GUY sing this song, but he did great. I actually think Simon just picked this song for Paula, because it is one of her favorite songs. When David gets to the "MY LOVE" part Simon starts applauding and stares at Paula but she won't look at him.

  • A 1:34 isn't enough of this song, I want more!!! If ever it was on itunes, it's not there anymore. damn...

  • i listen to this over and over again and i wish there was a studio version of this!!!!!

  • He is a beautiful soul and he puts it into every song he performs.

  • I liked it especially the ending note. I didnt watch Idol that season or this one for that fact of the matter, but it is going on my fav's.

  • I think he did the best he could. This is not the genre he's used to singing....

  • Wait. Didn't he say he was singing it for his mom in the audience?

Regardless, I thought it was a rockin performance certainly above "this stunk," but I do understand your point that it did not display the tenderness that the original song had. Since it was Simon's "worthy" selection, however, I felt he did what he could with it.

  • the final note is actually the only part I really loved about the performance. Simon gave him this song so he could modify it and give it an edgy dark sound... but he just sang it normal.

  • Not bad. But Roberta Flack's is a classic for good reason.

  • Yeah but look at that face while he is singing it! He is gorgeous.

  • I always thought this was an ok song until DC sang it - made me love it.

  • bleh so so, i prefer Celine's version much more

  • He's done a good job, as have other people as a cover. My favourite though is George Michael's version. It gets me everytime.

  • too good!

  • This song has been released as a "cover" by everyone from Elvis to Lewis.

Awesome song that is difficult to sing. Cook brought his own version and sang the hell of the 1:34 he was given, using it to show his increditble range and vocal command. The man can sing!

  • What do you mean "By Roberta Flack"??

It was written by Ewan McColl for and inspired by Peggy Seeger. It's a man's song for his lady.

  • it was sung by roberta flock..♥

  • hes the bomb! its damn damn good.

  • A truly beautiful song performed with all the finesse of a foghorn. Check out Leona's live version, Celine Dion's or the original Roberta Flack release. All three are far superior to this. Just sayin'...

  • i agree with leona and roberta but celine shes been washed up for sometime now. david cook did why better then celine dion and and leona like i said is good but this is ment for a man to his woman so in reality he did way better then all three

  • i agree but at the same time dis agree its ment for a man to a women and leona is good i just wish she would not just show heart but show some soul too!

  • By the way the song is by Ewan MacColl, written (1957) for his wife Peggy.

    Give him some credit please.

  • One of the most beautiful songs. However, this version is bloody awful.

  • eh i like peter paul and marys better

  • Anyone who has the nerve to type what you did beedunne has absolute no class. If you don't like the artist then don't be so rude watch something else!

  • jealous much?

  • he won... you cockroach sucker.....

  • This is such a beautiful song...only made even better by David's voice...who could survive this song without crying? I can't...especially when I watch it too and look into David's eyes...god I love you David, you had me at hello...and I will always love you...forever.

  • marry me hun..

    oh my God..

this song for me not for his mother..

    hehehehehhehheh....

  • marry me hun...

    OMG...

    ur voice..

    oooooooooooh
