There was never confirmation!" and Wes Craven goes, "Exactly!" and Hayden then says, "You're never dead until it's seen." The fact that Jill says that Kirby and her mom were killed may be based off that she knew there were plans to kill Kirby and since she hadn't seen Kirby after, she assumed she was dead.
