Where would we be if everyone played with the same style? It would get boring very quickly. Don is not taking away from the classical essence, he is adding so much more to it.

These musicians (most on candyrat) think outside the box, and do it beautifully. It's not a contest, they are doing what they love and most of us are loving it!

And those "parlor tricks" are called "play style". Do you have one of your own? It's not that hard when you practice ^.^

I love how the musicality of the arrangement is forefront to the "technique/percussiveness". I'm not a sucker for 'percussive playing' (tho, I've done some, too). You can spend all day practicing scales, modes, working with this slap and that tuning, but at the end of the day, did you play a SONG? Some of the post-Ross guys are more technical than he is, but there's something about the sheer size and power of his progressions. Everything he writes is rooted in blues and funk, he absolutely crushes some of the big open chords, but he never loses track of the melody and dissonance that have come to define this genre.
