IF the odds of successfully navigating an asteroid field were 3,720:1, why were they giving him so much crap about trying? I think C3PO actually meant 1:3,720. The way he said it, there is 3,720 for surviving and 1 against surviving...Just a little mathematical knowledge fyi.
@jdtench I just read in my stats class how to calculate this. The odds 3720:1 are C3PO's personal probability of the likelihood they will get out alive. The formula for the Probability P of an event given the Odds A:B is B/(A+B). In this case, where A=3720 and B=1, the probability is 1/3271, or 0.0002% chance of getting out alive. I feel like such a nerd now that I've done this, but it was too much fun!
@solfegg - "How in the hell did you calculate those odds, Mr. C3P0?
solfegg 1 month ago" The F.A.A. exists in a "galaxy far away" and keeps records. Maybe they even keep separate records for asteroid field survivors whether they were drunk teenagers or smugglers outrunning the Empire!
I love the lighting in the Falcon cockpit. It's fuckin briliant. Empire is far and away the best looking movie of any of them. The lighting and the design of the carbon chamber set is amazing. It's one of my all time favorite sets Ive ever seen in any movie.
It's Pat McCardle's shoe, one of the fx cameraman. Ive worked with him, he told me about it. Across the hall from them, doing other fx camera work, was David Fincher.
They did it in Return of the Jedi too. Academy Award Winning DP Robert Elswitt was an AC for Garrett Brown, the inventor of the steadicam, who shot all the Endor speeder bike chase stuff.
He told me it was during the giant space battle at the end. Elswitt and Garrett did the speeder bike chase, they ran through the woods with his steadicam at 60 fps, which when played back created a super fast effect. (I got to work with Elswit, when we had some downtime I said "Give me just ONE Star Wars story..."
I think the Star Wars prequels used CGI right. They use costumes, real actors, and real props where the scenes were the most dynamic in duologue and character interaction. And CGI found use in creating what would have been impossible 30 years ago, The Clone Wars themselves.
I like the CGI, CGI gives movies the ability to do things that would be impossible with models ALONE. Although don't get me wrong I love the old movies and the amazing job they did with the models.
they need to make movies like this again. no cgi. The movie Avatar tho pretty much sealed the fate of movies, good bye realism. This scene makes those 200 million dollar movies look like shit.
I defn agree movies defn need to be more like the Star Wars Trilogy with the effects, but Avatar was a masterpeice dude..But i still agree with you CGI is really getting old..
I did see Avatar and it was amazing but I still have to back up what i said. also.......Avatar was very.....very similar to Pocahontas wasn't it? Not that the story mattered.
goddamn it old star wars is still the illest shit out. any 1 also remember shadows of the empire on n64 they used the asteroid field music in this scene in that level of the game too. epic
Honestly though, I think the models are even better than the "good" CGI out there. I saw Avatar recently and I thought the CGI was incredible...but that's just it. I thought the CGI was incredible. I knew it wasn't real. With Avatar I thought the CGI was incredible, but with the old Star Wars movies I thought the SHIPS were incredible, ya know? They looked and flew like ships. The Avatar people looked like...CGI. Very good CGI, but CGI. The "real" factor seems to be gone from modern cinema.
I think most imperial officers had british accents as it was a reference to Britians past as imperialists and its empire. Also, a proper (posh) english accent is sorta fitting to the perfect world of the empire. I do write some rubbish at times.
I first saw this when I was 10 yrs old, and it still gives me goosebumps, Han Solo, Chewbacca and the Millenium Falcon are still the coolest characters in the galaxy!...
This sence is one of my absolute faves from empire. If it was done now it would be ruined with over the top CGI. The scene as it is, is a good mix of character, effects and spot on editing. God knows how Lucas would ruin it now if he could.
@2Mazed well.... it's the never ending was between old and new fans..... about every saga of this planet...and especially one of a galaxy far far away.
Best movie ever. I can't understand how anyone can think the prequels hold a candle to the originals. ESB, in terms of editing, writing, music...is just awesome!!
I never understood why they didn't send Leia into the gunner's turret and maybe shoot back?? at the tie fighters! They used those guns against ties in Star Wars, and in Return of the Jedi. We know those guns were functioning since Han used them on stormtroopers in the hangar on Hoth. You dropped the ball, Solo.
he wanted leia to stay in the cockpit so he could impress her mabye... or mabye he didnt want to risk losing her if one of the ties hit the turret... ormabye she didnt know how to use a space cannon or something..... i dunno, ask lucas
