  • This scene>Avatar movie

  • The music is just the best. I love this track the most.

  • So this is where the they got the name for that one Halo CE achievement...

  • 0:16

  • Peter Griffin as Han Solo: Look, we have 4 or 5 main characters on this ship I think we'll be fine.

  • IF the odds of successfully navigating an asteroid field were 3,720:1, why were they giving him so much crap about trying? I think C3PO actually meant 1:3,720. The way he said it, there is 3,720 for surviving and 1 against surviving...Just a little mathematical knowledge fyi.

  • @jdtench I just read in my stats class how to calculate this. The odds 3720:1 are C3PO's personal probability of the likelihood they will get out alive. The formula for the Probability P of an event given the Odds A:B is B/(A+B). In this case, where A=3720 and B=1, the probability is 1/3271, or 0.0002% chance of getting out alive. I feel like such a nerd now that I've done this, but it was too much fun!

  • NEVER TELL ME THE ODDS!

  • RIP IRVIN!! YOU DID WHAT LUCAS COULD NEVER DO

  • @ocabcabin7 Irvin who?

  • @JEDI7ACEN- Irvin Kershner. He directed Empire Strikes Back. He passed away last year.

  • never tell me the odds

  • i think the thing that makes empire my favorite is it is the only film where the empire has the upper hand at the end.....and it ends with uncertanty

  • @rushbum Yep, it's good to see the empire win something.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm begining to see why the Empire calls those Tie Pilots "coffin jockeys" Because of the high mortality rate on missions,

    Good scene.

  • It's the acting that made these early versions so much better in my opinion!

  • One of the asteroids in this vid is actually a potato.

    Trust me. #omgfacts

  • Han Solo is bad fucking ass

  • These shot of the Falcon made this spaceship an ICON of all sci fi spaceship. Is this chase scene.

  • they'd be crazy to follow us, wouldn't they?

im gonna try this the next time the cops are chasing me down the highway lol j/k

  • i love this scene. the music is so captivating to me. and han solo is so cool......

  • 0:32 - 0:34 what a dumbass:)

  • 0:09 Potatoe

  • I forgot how good the soundtrack is on this, best, StarWars movie.

  • How in the hell did you calculate those odds, Mr. C3P0?

  • 0:36 to 0:41 is my favourite explosion in the whole saga. I don't know why, it just is.

  • 0:36 to 0:41 my favourite starfighter explosion in the whole saga.

  • I love the lighting in the Falcon cockpit. It's fuckin briliant. Empire is far and away the best looking movie of any of them. The lighting and the design of the carbon chamber set is amazing. It's one of my all time favorite sets Ive ever seen in any movie.

  • Í´ve seen the tennis shoe! It is so obvious, I wonder how I couldn´t recognize it, before.

  • It's Pat McCardle's shoe, one of the fx cameraman. Ive worked with him, he told me about it. Across the hall from them, doing other fx camera work, was David Fincher.

  • Thank you for the reply! A pleasure that someone from the movie buisiness wrote to me!

  • They did it in Return of the Jedi too. Academy Award Winning DP Robert Elswitt was an AC for Garrett Brown, the inventor of the steadicam, who shot all the Endor speeder bike chase stuff.

  • Interesting. At which point it is in "Return of the Jedi"?

But what have Robert Elswitt and Garret Brown to do with it?

  • He told me it was during the giant space battle at the end. Elswitt and Garrett did the speeder bike chase, they ran through the woods with his steadicam at 60 fps, which when played back created a super fast effect. (I got to work with Elswit, when we had some downtime I said "Give me just ONE Star Wars story..."

  • Thank you for the reply. You had a great job. I envy you.

  • Dont envy me too much. Im non union and I dont make shit.

  • @kingofdepew Well, I´ve meant, I envy your job. I would like to make such interesting work, too.

  • Great music.

  • this is still one of my favorite moments in film

  • Great movie making on every level. Why couldn't the new movies be half as good as this, just half!

  • And at 0:31... the little pilot flying out of the debris ON FIRE OwO

  • And at 1:05 there comes a tennis shoe that fly through the picture from left to right.

  • I think the Star Wars prequels used CGI right. They use costumes, real actors, and real props where the scenes were the most dynamic in duologue and character interaction. And CGI found use in creating what would have been impossible 30 years ago, The Clone Wars themselves.

  • Anyone noticed how the old Star Wars movie were more funnier?

  • I like the CGI, CGI gives movies the ability to do things that would be impossible with models ALONE. Although don't get me wrong I love the old movies and the amazing job they did with the models.

  • "Sir, the odds of successfully navigating an asteroid field are 2 to 1!"

"NEVER TELL ME THE...oh...oh w, wait really? Oh...okay. Sure, that's okay, I'll take that."

  • Family Guy: "There. That looks pretty good."

    "What does?"

    "That piece of space pie."

  • they need to make movies like this again. no cgi. The movie Avatar tho pretty much sealed the fate of movies, good bye realism. This scene makes those 200 million dollar movies look like shit.

  • I defn agree movies defn need to be more like the Star Wars Trilogy with the effects, but Avatar was a masterpeice dude..But i still agree with you CGI is really getting old..

  • I did see Avatar and it was amazing but I still have to back up what i said. also.......Avatar was very.....very similar to Pocahontas wasn't it? Not that the story mattered.

  • Yea i guess i can see the pocahontas thing..i liked avatar better though

  • Han Solo is a BOSS!

  • So is Indiana Jones!

  • goddamn it old star wars is still the illest shit out. any 1 also remember shadows of the empire on n64 they used the asteroid field music in this scene in that level of the game too. epic

  • badass that game was.

  • Did anyone notice that this scene is far batter than all that CGI generated crap on all the new films?

  • That's because all the objects are real, as in proper models that excist unlike terrible CGI, models add life if you know what I mean!

  • @cinebird What fantastic insight. You must work for Google.

  • Honestly though, I think the models are even better than the "good" CGI out there. I saw Avatar recently and I thought the CGI was incredible...but that's just it. I thought the CGI was incredible. I knew it wasn't real. With Avatar I thought the CGI was incredible, but with the old Star Wars movies I thought the SHIPS were incredible, ya know? They looked and flew like ships. The Avatar people looked like...CGI. Very good CGI, but CGI. The "real" factor seems to be gone from modern cinema.

  • While it uses CGI, Firefly was an awesome TV show that really captured the space adventure feel. 12 episodes a pure bliss imho.

  • @b25364 Ditto, I prefer the old starwars FX than the 3D CGI overkill of the new starwars, sometimes it really kills the story.

  • @b25364 - "Did anyone notice that this scene is far batter" Filling the screen with junk interferes with the story.

  • @b25364

Agreed it feels more tangible like you are there on the adventure rather than watching a movie.

  • @b25364 Everyone noticed

  • @b25364 this is remastered lol

  • did any body else notice bodies flying from the tie fighters if you pause it when they explode

  • I think most imperial officers had british accents as it was a reference to Britians past as imperialists and its empire. Also, a proper (posh) english accent is sorta fitting to the perfect world of the empire. I do write some rubbish at times.

  • thats good

  • i never understood why c3po had a british accent.....as a matter of fact i think every imperial officer was british as well..

  • no that's not it! bring me the hydro-spanner!

  • lubial dampers?

  • haha carrie fisher's face is hilarious in this scene. her eyes are HUGE the whole time.

  • epic! Han Solo rules!

  • I first saw this when I was 10 yrs old, and it still gives me goosebumps, Han Solo, Chewbacca and the Millenium Falcon are still the coolest characters in the galaxy!...

  • @deansarge

The Millenium Falcon is not really a character but I get what you mean.

  • This sence is one of my absolute faves from empire. If it was done now it would be ruined with over the top CGI. The scene as it is, is a good mix of character, effects and spot on editing. God knows how Lucas would ruin it now if he could.

  • haha so true man

  • oh yeah. He totally would, because CGI has become cheaper than using models. :(

  • @MrLozzer y is everyone so negative to the new movies??? i like them as i like the old ones...

    they are just different!

  • @2Mazed well.... it's the never ending was between old and new fans..... about every saga of this planet...and especially one of a galaxy far far away.

Personally i like both.... but that's my opinion.

  • ffffff fuck you!!! ep.V kicks ep.III's ass all day

  • Best movie ever. I can't understand how anyone can think the prequels hold a candle to the originals. ESB, in terms of editing, writing, music...is just awesome!!

  • 00:16! Never tell me the odds!!!

  • love the shoe asteroid 1.05 in lol

  • I never understood why they didn't send Leia into the gunner's turret and maybe shoot back?? at the tie fighters! They used those guns against ties in Star Wars, and in Return of the Jedi. We know those guns were functioning since Han used them on stormtroopers in the hangar on Hoth. You dropped the ball, Solo.

  • thats a damn good point.

  • the gun he used on the stormtroopers in the hanger wasnt the same as the quad turrets, it was just a smaller anti-infanty cannon

  • idd that wasnt the same gun

  • he cant shoot back only up and down with those weapons

  • he wanted leia to stay in the cockpit so he could impress her mabye... or mabye he didnt want to risk losing her if one of the ties hit the turret... ormabye she didnt know how to use a space cannon or something..... i dunno, ask lucas

  • it is beauty this scene. the asteroids even look more realistic than that CGI asteroid stuff in one of th new star wars movies.

  • I'll bet they could do some asteroids right now that would make your jaw drop though

I think I literally thought Davy Jones in Pirates 2/3 was real

Sucky thing with todays special effects is that it looks old after about six years

    maybe

  • Empire blows every other Star Wars Movie (espeically the new ones) completely out of the water. The main reason is the acting under Kirshner's direction. I think the "old" special effects are way more real looking too. With the new movies, I feel like I'm watching a video game. Plus the acting is down-right crappy.

  • As far as the acting goes, it really depends on the character. I enjoyed both portrayals of Obi-wan.

  • Yeah, Obi wasn't bad. I also liked Windu; it's kinda hard to go wrong with Samuel L. Jackson. Too bad he went out like a punk, though; seems to be a running theme.

Boba Fett, Jango Fett, Qui Gon, etc.

  • beautiful- absoloutly beautiful. cinematic genius right there ladies and gentlemen.

  • LoL sure looks like it...but that has gotta be a bit of the asteroid.

  • at 00:32 the TIE pilot is visible hurteling out of the crash!!!!

  • LOL your right!!!!

  • I love this film, and this is the best bit

  • That just goes to show, it's the editing (along with the special effects crew here specifically) that makes a shot like this stand out so! Brilliant!

  • its the music that makes this particular scene so great!

  • You can see a tie fighter pilot being thrown from the crash at 00:32, Sweet!!!

  • "Sir, the possibility of successfully navigating an asteroid field is approximately three-thousand seven-hundred and twenty-one!"

    "Never tell me the odds!"

--gotta be my favourite quote of the franchise!

  • the 3rd asteroid you see (flying across the top left) is actually a potato!!!!!!

  • "They'd be crazy to follow us, wouldn't they?"

  • Best movie in the entire series.

  • I´d love to have that music!

  • never tell me the odds!

  • yeah, great music

  • c-3po is a wimp

  • BUT SIR!

I love it when he says that.

  • What a dick, shut up.

  • chewie take m5Brane and plug him into the hyperdrive.

  • LOL

Well I am a fan but we must not forget that Star Wars isn't science. There are so many scientific mistakes in Star Wars I cannot even begin to count. Anyway as I said earlier, it is the drama that dictates the story.

  • best music in the world

  • Amazingly beautiful sequence. My favourite space scene in the entire saga.

  • My fave is the rebel attack on the death star in return of the jedi ;)

  • Still takes you breath away even today

  • and the most compicated one :P

  • How is it that this is over twenty years ago and yet it is more enchanting and balletic and believable than anything in the prequels?

  • In Twenty years time the prequels will have a loyal following also All cults take time to develop The Empire Strikes had some great moments but was a far from perfect movie despite all the hype about it

  • You don't have to be a Jedi to sense a shill in the vicinity.

  • Another good scene that shows just how awesome Han Solo is.

  • i love C3PO

"never tell me th odds" lol

  • the the scene, the music, its just euphoric. Sheer genius in all departments.

  • Best Chase sequence in Science Fiction

  • BEST SCENE EVER
