fail, you should change your major. Consider truck driving because this "scientific" test had as much "science" in it as baked potatoes left in the oven too long.
The Jay Leno test, was performed by pros of morse code, that can send almost 60 Words per minutes. That is fast compared to SMS on a blackberry with a full keyboard. A true scientific test would be to send a morse code to a receiving computer with the appropriat software that can count the exact WPM and even the right count for Caracters per Minutes.
You should compare apples to apples: someone who uses morse code daily (and thus is faster at it). Either that, or compare it to someone who uses sms texting casually maybe once a week. This comparison you made wasn't either of that.
Jay Leno at least tried: he compared a texting champion to two old farts who were fairly good at morse code - ie hardly to morse code's advantage - and it still won. To be fair, he should have chosen two morse code champions. He didn't, and morse code still won.
That one minute it took you to send at what sounded like maybe 18wpm can be cut down tremendously sending at 30-50wpm. A considerable difference to factor in. Average person is sending at least 23-25wpm so maybe you guys can try it again at a higher speed for an alternative possibility to see what the results are at much higher speeds. Interesting vid though!
morse code is universal, if a ship loses power and is dead in the waterwith no one but a foreign ship to save it from floundering, text messaging wont work, morse code will be understood always. if your good at it, you can send it just as fast i think
-.-,.--.,.-..,.
I just learned a few words today, the hard part is remembering.
Use this free program "just learn morse code" google it, it's pretty neat.
Remember the "hot shots" where the guy writes morse code like, dit dit dot dot, lol.
It's pronounced MORSE, not MORRIS! In addition, your 'experiment' was a joke! You are obviously not proficient at sending morse code (or CW, as Ham operators refer to it). Any halfway proficient morse code operator would have easily blown away the texter in terms of speed! You should get an 'F' for your flawed project! LOL
Not terribly scientific, but I like the Ten Tec OMNI D. I've got one and love it. I think in texting a computer is dong the actual sending of the message, so it is more fair to have operators who can send/receive at 30 WPM to do code for the "race" That's how they did it on the tonight show.
This is completely unfair. they put a practically professional texter to a guy who dosen't have much expeirience on the telegraph. You should just see the breakfast show telegraph versus texting, and that guy on the B.U.G telegraph beat her to the ground!!!!
Who cares about the pronunciation of a word in this video? - That is not the point here. Pull the hair out of your arse and pay attention to the fun experiment that just happened. Everyone worried about word pronunciation needs a fleet enema.
If the Ham operator was sending at 35 WPM which is typical for a proficient Ham Operator, and the texter did NOT use autocomplete… the morse code would win everytime… as the typical person can only text at 10-20 words per minute without using autocomplete. Also the transmission time for Morse code is REAL time, versus the Latency of the Cell Phone network for texting. Leno’s test only had 8 standard words (5 characters per word) While this demonstration had 25. This favors the Texter.
well, it is not really about how fast we communicate, but what the contents of the message is! and on that level, nowadays, the kids really don't have much to say at all! most of what they text is mere useless chatter as in "I'm at the movies.... cooool, and you" reply "cool man" or worse! I have seen them sit in a cafe and text each other, while sitting side by side at the same table! What happened to simply speaking with each other? These kids don't even know how to have eye-contact anymore!
Chip K7JA sent about 35 WPM. The video is around -- although I no longer find it here on YouTube. The message sent was "I JUST SAVED A BUNCH OF MONEY ON MY CAR INSURANCE" I don't recall if there was any punctuation sent at the end. I don't think so. W6SBE mentioned already that the SMS guy was using an old keyboard. By changing the conditions one way or another, you can "advantage" whoever you want to.
The Jay Leno demonstration used the old cellphone keyboard not the querty keyboard of the blackberry. You are comparing apples and oranges and that wasn't the original challenge. Just changing keyboards on the cellphone changed the results of the contest. 73 Dan w6sbe
You didn't morse quick enough my friend! If you were a 40/50WPM guy, you would have won that no problemski. I can't morse that quick, but there are people that can.... crazy world! 73 DE Mike M0SAZ
I know some O.M's that can send BOOKS of code, much faster than texting. It's a dying art, Don't let it go Hams!

Wednesday, 2/23/11. It is not pronounced 'Morr-is' code. It is not two syllables. It is pronounced 'Morse' code. It is one syllable; 'Morse' code.
