  • Lots of notes, but little actual music.

  • Anyone who thinks they should gravitate towards bass guitar as a first instrument because they think it is easier or whatever(than say a 6 string guitar), needs to watch this man for a second opinion.

  • horrible

  • tabarnak!

  • what's with this guy's jeans?

  • How can one man single handedly crush so many boundaries? Fucking insane

  • Can't hear a single note... boring... Mark king mr pink solo... That's a solo you hear every note...

  • @Scythe0001 I watched the Mark King Mr Pink solo. Cool stuff man! But seriously, you can't compare that to Manring. The audio quality on here is a little shady, but this guy is the man. Might I suggest you check out his cover of Teen Town to get a better idea of his abilities (it's kind of tricky to find - search for Michael Manring Bass Day)

  • @dwbugher Hi !! I have the Bass day DVD and have seen Teen Town, and also when he ask's 2 audience members up so he can play 3 bass guitars at once.. I guess, it's just not my thing but thanks for the message. Where would the world be if we all had the same taste. One thing is for sure, it's all good high quality stuff. I enjoyed victor wooten on that bass day, First time I had heard of him.. :)

  • whats with this guys jeans?

  • Those "odd metallic thingies" are spring clips

  • I HATE UGLY FRETLESS BASSES

  • @fishfrizbee well this one isnt fretless genius

  • Awesome music! It's not often you hear someone do a solo cover of a classic song.

  • I like this. There's many kind of bass players and I'n interested bout his effects. Jaco is number one but not only one

  • can we see anywhere Manring laying the bass line? playing the rhythm part with a band??? it's always himself or with another dude improvising or playing solo alone. Great bass players play the rhythm too u know. Take Wooten for exp. It's not only the skills and all this technique he does.. Listen to Extraction album where he mostly plays rhythm. Just bass, no soloing no nothing... Brilliant! Listen to hyperacuity album. Dale Fisher is THE man!!!! forget soloing. focus on the actual basslines.

  • listen to every album of his career his first 6 or so were mostly bass lines its only recently he has been passing the realms of conventional playing. listen to his album Michael Manring & David Cullen - Equilibré. its just him an an accoustic guitarist. he lays the fundament and groove for every song.. no experimental stuff at all. just straight pulse. its unbelievable.

  • this guy has been playing for so long and mastering every facet of the bass this is just another world he is explording after mastering every other...

  • @camelspottergr Manring is a great grooving bassist but he's left that behind to concentrate on solo stuff.

  • @camelspottergr check out attention deficit, it's manring playing with guitarist alex skolnick and tim alexander (of primus fame). true he is not as rooted in funk and soul as wooten, but his work with fusion is not to be discredited. there are many ways of being a great bassist

  • @klyde4parliament and, for the record i kind of hoped this would be manring covering the marvin gaye tune mercy mercy me. now jamerson is a bassist i think we can all agree was worthy of praise!

  • @camelspottergr music is about not having guidelines or rules. shame shame.

  • @edthehead83 Thank you. my point exactly.. but music is about playing music.. cant find my comment. it's too old, but i remember saying something about why we dont see Manring playing with a bunch of musicians and instead we have him solo all the time.... wasn't that what i said? how did u come about guidelines and rules?

  • @camelspottergr Your comment has obviously negative implications regarding Michael's style. There are videos of him playing in a band and he's good at it. But he chooses to do this instead.

  • @edthehead83 if you watch the videos of the house concert he gave he says that he loves doing band stuff, but he thinks the bass can do so much more. and he has made band stuff, just search bad hair day by him, its amazing. and doing this stuff is so much harder than playing in a band

  • @JEVentrillon Tell that to camelspottergr. Me and you are on the same page!

  • comprate una pandereta

  • Where's the love people? Like Manring or not I think it is clear he has talent.

  • scratch croutch crrr.... ggrrriiririueuu ....plouch ploutch rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.......plop poum ploups hrsssssssss.............

  • listen to selene by him if you haven't. i think he communicates a lot in that song, it speaks to me at least.

  • I agree to a certain extent - it makes me sick when armchair quarterbacks sit back and talk shiite incessantly.

That said - sometimes things are SOOOO self-indulgent that it becomes ridiculous. For instance, I think some people who say they really enjoy Free Jazz only say so because they think it gives them some sort of Jazz "street cred", which is silly.

  • man!!!! i love you!!!! why most people don't see things your way bits me... i'm with u 100%

  • haha a phone rings at the end and he stops.

  • theres top part

  • I don't get it. Is this a shred?

  • LOL nah man... those videos are hillarious tho... in this video michael is experimenting by putting paper clips on the strings above the pickups... gives an obscure string resonating sound

  • Wierd.... another Manring video where a teenage scatmouth crowd has shown up to spew bile. Hate to see it, wonder why you folks even come around here.

  • He takes a great tune and makes complete crap out of it.

I remember sitting backstage at The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco (downstair actually)...with a great musician who Manring was Opening for way back in the 80s...

and as the horrible sound of Manring drifted into the backstage room we were in...this musician just rolled his eyes and looked at me said; horrible.

  • you see so DESPERATE to name drop.

    yet you dont.

  • HA! I don't even mention his name so who's "name dropping"/

    I see you like to post bad videos of your own bass playing with "bad timing" as you describe it;

Rather than accept bad playing why not reach higher? Oh, too busy writing nonsense to me.

My advice; Listen to Mercy Mercy Mercy played by the original guys who used SOUL not tricks to convey music.

  • did you really only read the word name drop in my post?

also, i posted a video i admit is bad, that dosnt mean i cant do better, i was just testing my camera.

which is crap for videos indoors but that's completly unrelated

  • You're a lazy player;

You drag your fingers as you move around and get all sorts of ugly sounds...

Best get some technique and practice...and some standards that would not allow you to post 3rd rate playing.

Stop watching this Manring when you have a master like Jaco to study. You might get someplace. Or not.

Re; Video cam; Tis a poor craftsman who blames his tools.

  • why are we slagging off my playing on a video where i admit i wasnt trying to push myself?

and secondly, i cant craft LIGHT, if i blamed my bass for my playing THEN you'd be right, but i'm blaming the camera for not taking the light well.

i have no power over that

  • now you sound like a cry baby.

  • you sound like you have a MILLION difrent things better to be doing than trying to argue with me about something i really dont give the slightest of a shit about

  • Glass houses, Dude.

  • i'm not the one running a comentary on a video posted to test a camera.

it's like critisising the coluor test card they used to have.

i'm going to stop now, you're just not fun to argue with

  • Yes, go dry your tears.

  • sorry for the confusion, that otrher dude told me to post that, his keyboard broke or somthing

  • ugly sound???

omg what an asshole you are

  • Rexicano, kill yourself, please.

  • yes i am an assfucker,but i fuck your girlfriend's ass,and it was terrible

  • you should check out some of the other stuff manring has done. i wouldn't judge him on this song only and how he played in the 80's.

  • very nice.. he has mastered the instrument

  • Incredible bassist, world's shittiest audio. The acoustics are horrible.

  • haha agreed. haha. i think he should of turned some of the reverb he had going down a tad bit.

  • 6:46 ..... WTF???? That was just about the coolest thing I've ever heard.

  • 4:40? He's just using a repeat echo pedal or looping pedal or something. You can use it to record a few bars and loop them so you can play over top yourself

  • Think he was asking about the effect, not the looping. Some sort of octave pedal couple with I don't know what, some weirdass effect.

  • can someone tell me what happens at 4:40? is that a bass synth, midi thing or what? where does that endless sustain come from?

but to come back to that jeans thing. i´ve got some of these too. i always thought they are o.k. are there people who look after me when i walk on the street and start to laugh and saying things like: hahaha, look that guy wears jeans, hahaha...? that discussion makes me a bit nervous...aren´t that just...trousers?

  • what the fuck their just fucking jeans blue jeans. hes not trying to set a fucking fashion statement. he looks like a normal human so everyone shut up. and plus this fucking rules because manring always does.

  • i don't understand why everyone hates his jeans... they seem normal to me

and honestly why do you give a damn what he's wearing

  • At 6:46 I had to change my underwear!

  • quite bitchin about his fuckin jeans Carson Kressley!!

  • why did he jump into the audience?? jk XD

  • his jeans? they're normal jeans.

  • Yeah, if you are doing an audition to get the part as rainman.

  • my point being that his jeans aren't really a relevant part of the video.

  • it's not really pissing me off, it's just irrelevant in terms of this video's purpose.

  • Is the format known as video a visual media?

  • regardless, the purpose of this video is to observe this "song", not to comment on his pants. and certainly you're free to do so, just as I'm free to question the relevancy of your comment.

  • Being a visual media, is it possible that the potential viewer not only makes observations about the music, but also makes observations about the imagery?

  • this is possible, but as I said in my previous comment, it's irrelevant. And I also said you're free to comment on his jeans, but I am equally free to comment on the irrelevancy of your comment! You're just trying to make your comments sound more intelligent than they actually are.

  • It's simlpy ridiculous. You're watching a bass solo, who the fuck cares about jeans?

  • Embarassing. You're so immature.

  • You know, being a metrosexual is not the coolest thing on earth. You have no talent no hearing appreciation hey but at least youve got nice pants. Nice going kuke

  • Isn´t it hard to jerk guys off when you type?

  • I LOVE Michael Manring, but the audio on this video is HORRIBLE! Don't even bother.

  • Flawless! Manring is an Amazing Act. I cant wait to see him in 2008!

  • what a dick with the cellphone!

always turn off your cell when at a performance like this!

  • Folks, we don't call him the "Mario Van Peebles" of solo headless bass abstract tap funk avant-garde for nothin'

  • not my favorite piece at all. lol

  • this has the sophistication of fantasy art. Now all Michael needs to do is paint a unicorn on his bass and then put on a concert from his wall-to-wall carpeted suburban home. Then he will have totally honed in on his demographic.

  • hahahahah

  • NICE.

  • Fantastic!!!

  • He should be a Chapman stick player

  • Mercy mercy mercy? Its originally a Jaco piece... So this is a cover actually?

  • Ha, very Avante Garde, like John Cage prepared piano...

  • Oh, Mercy Mercy Mercy is a Zawinul-song... no wonder I couldn't find any link to Manring besides this.

  • sounds like a wooten song of a show of hands! but more complex.. MAN WHAT SKILL!!

  • ya and the headless bass is insane

  • I saw Manring in a clinic in June. This is improv. Those are alligator clips. He was talking about what the last guy mentioned, "prepared bass." These are for an industrial sound. Basicaly, Manring is the fucking man.

  • prepared bass

  • Michael Manring is incredible, i love how he uses every aspect of the bass and then some. Every noise it makes, he incoperates that into his playing.

  • Jesus, what terrible acoustics that place had. And a damn shame too, I wish I could've heard properly Don Ross and him playing...

  • mercy mercy mercy?

  • Yes It's mercy mercy mercy Ive heard him do this live a few times.

  • Cool. So does he improvise over snippets of Mercy mercy mercy or is the actual song like this?

  • improvisation!

  • Really? Thanks. What an improv!

  • I'm not sure what this song is...I honestly have all of his albums, but do not have a song that is 9:37 minutes long...
