In general the USSR simply had better, more innovative coaches &choreographers. Karolyi and the Marta with may have thought they were god's gift to humanity, but the fact of the matter is that their routines in the 70s were laughable. Not to take away from the Romanians, they were/are world-class and they were perfect executioners, but the Soviets simply had an extra advantage.

Romania has the legend of Nadia, but USSR was more dominating as at team for a bit longer. But by Sydney, USSR has collapsed and Russia and Romania was pretty much equal.

@theurbansoul well,not exactly equal,after all in this time in 96 russia won silver and romania bronze but in sidney romania won gold and russia won bronze and you probably know but i have seen that others dont the fact that ussr team was composed with gymnast from 5 or 6 country from the soviet union(mostly ukrainian and bielorusan and some from tadjikistan,moldova), so ussr(310 mil people from 15 diferent nation) not equal with russia(140 mil people one nation).i mentioned this for the record.

I think they're both great and have had great gymnasts. It depends on which era you look at, some times the Romanians were better-Nadia-but sometimes it was the USSR-Olga. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but for me it's which time period you look at.

Definitely romanians. They have always bought it forth where it really matters. And they don't end an olympic event without at least winning a gold medal. In case of the russians, they ended 1992 without winning a gold medal and 2004 and 2008.

Soviets had a longer tradition in gymnastics and also controlled the judges (majority being East-Europeans). Though I believe Romanians were better. The only aspect where Soviets were superior is the "grace" in executing the floor exercises.

It was the training program they had before the breakup of the Soviet Union. Children were hand picked at a very young age as potential Olympians then put through a very rigorous training program where they lived away from home and trained with other gymnasts.

They might, but the program there isn't as successful like it was under the USSR. The Dynamo training gym in Moscow shut down to elite gymnasts I recently heard.

Soviets hands down, although 1987-1988 was a great year and a half or so of Romanian gymnasts. Dobre and Silivas were some of the best and I think Silivas should have won in '88.

Great montage. USSR had very good gymnasts, but Romania is my favourite. You should also include other awesome Romanian gymnasts like Ecaterina Szabo and Lavinia Milosovici. Also, in Sydney no Russian gymnast won anything in the individual contest, all the medals were taken by the Romanians, that would have been a great image to finish with, not Svetlana Horkina.

If I remember correctly, others have achieved a perfect score as well, notably Soviet gymnast Nellie Kim at the '76 Olympics in Montreal, which is the same Olympic games in which Comaneci scored her famous 10.

Actually that is not true, she was only the first to score a ten in Olympic competition. But the first ever perfect ten was rewarded to Vera Caslavska during the 1967 European Championchips, she scored one on beam and one on floor excercise.

It's really impossible to say who is better without considering the political and economic situations in each country. The Soviets dominated until the USSR broke up. I really miss the grace and innovation of the Soviets. They were always pushing the envelope, always trying to do something exciting. I really hope the Russian program can recover. But I also hope the Romanian program can survive as well considering all the economic problems Romania has to overcome.
