Good graphics and a good game are two different things.

Portal was based on a four-year-old engine, and was simply amazing. Meanwhile, they release gorgeous-looking games every year that don't play for crap (Fall of Liberty, I'm looking at you). Nukem has never been about graphics, it's been about gore and humor.
