I'm with you accept you need the ice. (just my opinion) I usually drink my stuff neat but if I have a cocktail I'll get an old fashioned. So far the best recipe i've seen on YouTube. Everyone else seems to ruin it. Thanks!

Dude, I was with you all the way until you added the cherry!  Also, you need some ice in there. There should be some dilution - the sugar is there to offset it.

some people can't handle high alcohol content, and may want to add ice for that reason. i prefer the strength of the whiskey and the warmth of the drink (rather than having it too chilled)

i've never seen any old fashioned recipe without a cherry. most recipes even muddle the cherry, but i find the flavor to be too distracting unless it's just a garnish.
