  • great talent....

  • tremendous technique....beautiful rendition!

  • Simply gorgeous. He has a great touch.

  • Beautiful rendition.

  • Not surprisingly the instru.-based melodic ideas translate to piano better than the vocal ones... well the main verse-form at least (the chorus sounds ok). Seems he only does the verse melody once, and it's (to me) the weakest part... not sure if he does the 'tossed a line around the changes of the summer' part at all. Wonder how many keys he 'modulates' to.. those modulations and changes in dynamics/feel are the best thing about the arrangement, IMO.

  • WONDERFUL.

  • Wonderful piece, as for credit, Wakeman couldn't get credit on any of the early Yes material due to music publishing issues.

  • He played it wrong? I've seen them in concert multiple times and he does it note for note like the album then. The man is a true musician and has the right to re-interpret his music to give it new life. I play various kinds of guitar (badly). I often change a song according to the type of guitar I'm using and the audience I'm playing to.

  • Prime example why YES is too good for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

    Just too good!

    Superb.

  • I prefer this version to the original!

  • He played it totally wrong.

  • @jkovert He's one of the musicians who composed the piece. Who are you to say his solo piano arrangement is "right or wrong"?

  • @GusFogle Actually, he didn't compose the piece. Anderson/Howe are credited.

  • @jkovert And you honestly think that, even though the track is filled with keyboards from beginning to end, Wakeman had nothing to do with what he played? The fact remains, he is the keyboardist who played on the original track. The harmonic structure of this solo version is more or less the same as the original. Playing the keyboard parts exactly as they were played on the studio version would not be feasible for this type of solo performance arrangement.

  • @GusFogle But he played it wrong.

  • Il Dio delle tastiere

  • 69drummerdude: Thank you I did no know that. The more I learn about this man the more amazed I am.

  • Glasses on@ 1.30 ????!!!! love to see/hear this in sync. Wow what a guy

  • My first and biggest influence on keys

  • Imagine what he could play if he actually opened his eyes when he plays piano. Still the genius piano player I grew up listening to. Love it Rick!!!!!!.

  • @zee7333 Sounds like you don't know the story about how he came to play with his eyes closed. As a kid his piano teacher taught him to play with eyes closed and paint pictures in his mind with naive childlike names. As he got older he had to play music from sheetmusic with serious names like 5th symphony in D minor. According to him he still plays his own music while painting colourfull pictures with childlike names in his head..... amazing or what.

  • Can't stand that it's out of sync, but I just love listening to this rendition. It's magical

  • beautiful rendition, but why are they showing art from albums he does'nt appear on?

  • It's interesting to hear the wakeman side of this song. It show that the Wakeman style is already there

  • OMFG!!!! I'm going to have my abdomen replaced with a uterus so I can have his children...

  • El maestro!!!! Fantastique!!!! Bravo!!!!!! What an artist!!!!!! Few appreciated his classical genius back in the seventies let alone these days with pumped out computer generated shite and image priorities. Now wonder there is no mony in the music industry - how about giving the music back to the musicians Mr A&R man?!!!!

  • @MrPinkpound Yeh, great way of putting it - give the music back to the musicians. Excellent comment!

  • Aloha Roby. Grazie, multo multo grazie for uploading this masterful rendition from the maestro himself. Just beautiful to hear.

    Peace, danny

  • To reach the transcendental feeling of somewhere in space and time where things are just happier than here and now is something this music brings to me. Marvelous is Rick Wakeman in this song.

  • I am currently transcribing this piano solo - it's tricky but getting there.

  • @RyanYardComposer Do send it to me at superib22@gmail.com when you're done please, I'd love to learn this piece.

  • Can't watch - how hard can it be to get audio and video synchronised??? Don't post otherwise!

  • Absolutely wonderful

  • a master

  • Most of this video is out of sync. It's so confusing. :/

  • I've always felt that Richard Wakeman's talents were under-utilized in the music of Yes.

  • Long live to Rick

  • Yes are better songwriters than ELP. I also reckon that Rick Wakeman is the pre-eminent rock keyboard player in rock music.

  • What's the point in comparing Rick to Keith ? I bet everybody here loves both ELP and YES

  • @murillomkra that's a great point. I have yet to meet someone who loves one band, but hates the other

  • Rick is a freak in the best of ways. One of the top 5 pianist of ALL times.

  • Breathtakingly beautiful ! I have always ben a fan !

  • It's like a whole new way of tasting fine wine.

  • Wonderful - it really is interesting to see how this piece of music is structured. This performance is truly inspiring.

  • @Topographer, there was a time when sound-video synchro was good too...

  • There was a time when youtube sound-picture synchro was real also.....

  • M A E S T R O !!!!!!!!!

  • he looks like a homeless prodigy xD

  • Il y a Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson... et il y a les autres.

  • Enchanting.

  • I'm not a fan of YES but I love this piece (I have to listen more their very complex discography). Close to the Edge is really a masterpiece. Beautiful accoustic release. Better than Keith Emerson ?... Not the same, Emerson plays more improvision, he's an "on stage" performer (and also a brillant musician, as well Rick is). Thanx for this ncie post.

  • Can't compare Rick and Keith - they're both great in their own ways. But I like Rick's personality (from interviews and his Grumpy Old Rock Star books). Seems like he'd make a great neighbor and friend.

  • OMG....He' is incredible!

  • @dnisler If you like this try his Birdman of Alcatraz on Criminal record and also Awaken where he plays the organ in Switzerland in the song- most amazing

  • Oliver Wakeman, by his own admisssion, said this is the Yessong most difficult to play. Yet here is his Dad playing it all alone. A truer master of the keyboard has never been known. Stunning.

  • YES, persons who were (or are) in, and related groups still surprise me after 25 years. They are an infinite source of creativity and beauty. Thank you all of them!

  • oh my fucking god

  • It´s amazing!! it´s magical!! Long live Rick!!! Thank you , RobyFacchinetti for uploading this wonderful piece of music!

  • three heart attacks couldn't stop him...no one can!

  • MR WAKEMAN SO FAR FROM THE REST OF KEYBOARDIST ¡¡¡

  • just wonderful

  • un verdadero MAGO!!!!!!!!!!

  • Such beautiful hands...God given

  • 4:36 Whats Relayer's cover doing here?

  • HIS HANDS >> SOOOOOOOO STUNNING

  • Awesome. They don't have any good talented musicians today; at all

  • i dont care what anyone says dream theater reminds me so much of yes, not in the music as much as the musicianship and stage performance though there are yes influences in both.

  • @shadowmalik009 There's a video of Dream Theater playing Machine Messiah with Steve Howe and John says that Yes influenced DT greatly and you can find it in the song structure or something. I personally dislike DT at the moment, but they had some great creative moments.

  • Just to be able to listen to this is a gift from God.

  • Yikes.

  • COULD SOMEONE PLEASE TRANSCRIBE THIS

  • ♥!

  • The way he arranged it, totally convinced me, this is one of the best musical compositions ever written.

  • Good music always takes you on a journey somewhere.

Rick's music captures your imagination and makes you feel something , It is an unprecedented joy that wells up inside of me to listen to such a talented man playing music that comes from his soul into my life.

  • My favorite keyboardist, my favorite piece of music. Too bad the audio isn't all synced with the video.

  • Awesome!!

  • what a legend this man is first got into his music at the age of 14 or 15 im now 53.wish i could get the sheet music for this version.

  • @paulallen34 lol..there is no sheet music for this....well there is but if you can play it god bless ya...just saw his son a month ago and he's friggin good too!

  • at 1:31 how can he put his eyeglasses so fast? Magic ? And then put them off again so fast !

  • NICE!!!!

  • bad editing great song

  • EYES CLOSED........ PURE FEELING

WHAT A MASTER HE IS !.....

  • @menatoq He is THE master!

  • This is amazin mr Wakeman.

  • Beautiful. His mastery of dynamics take you on a real ride.

  • Any1 kno who dis nigga iz? Neva heard dis dude B4, but he play tite!! Muthafuggin bad azz onna kybord!!!

  • the best.....

  • Talk about aging well - he looks great and sounds terrific. Bravo!

  • I have this DVD. It's a documentary about Yes which includes bonus footage of Wakeman playing solo piano versions of Close To The Edge, Long Distance Runaround, and Awaken. This is the CTTE footage. The video and audio aren't synched up on the DVD either - it's not just this You Tube video. It's INFURIATING that any DVD producer could allow this to happen with the sound and picture so out of synch. That guy should lose his job ASAP.

  • @tonusaitis what documentary is this where can I buy

  • Paz de Cristo

soy Juan tecladista de MAS QUE VENCEDORES

admiro a Rick Wakeman como pianista y tecladista que es.

  • Just enjoy.

  • Great stuff! Totally stands on its own, I need to have this recording!

Now I'm wondering if the whole composition was his, or is he just playing "variations" on it for piano? Anybody know?

  • What of the great rock masterpieces in my opinion. The melody in this is eternal

  • Wow! I knew he could play the keys but damn i didnt know the dynamics he could add in plus hes playing a 200,000 dollar nine foot steinway concert grand

  • GENIOOO

  • What the Hell is this?

Superb music but obviously not the video to go with it.

  • @CokeeDaPenguin Rick Wakeman is the keyboardist for the band Yes. Those pictures that you're seeing are from various Yes album artworks done by Roger Dean. It goes perfectly with the video.

  • "Some sync problems", no kidding. Love the music, but whoever put this video together did a pathetic job. Half the time his hands are not playing anything anywhere near what we're hearing...

  • lol what time is it rick

  • he looks like my grandpa

  • Quiet Brilliant! Technicaly superb!

  • Baravo, bravo, bravo.

  • Mesmerising.

  • @NevilleRhysBarnes you must be british

  • @WannaBHaxa Blimey, Guv, would you Adam and Eve it? One bleedin' word and you've got me bang to rights.

  • @NevilleRhysBarnes I noticed you used an s instead of a z. In the United states We would spell "Mesmerising" as Mesmerizing. See? thats who i know

  • @WannaBHaxa You're assuming I can spell. And that's a dangerous assumption, given the standards of literacy generally displayed on YouTube.

  • @NevilleRhysBarnes lol, I suppose so. But really, that last comment made absolutely no sense to me honestly lol.

  • Rick the best ever on all kinds of keyboards.

amazing the musicality on his fingers, beautifull.

  • What DVD is this from?

  • It must feel good to be able to play everything on piano.

  • Rick Wakeman better than Keith Emerson.

  • @SonicBrunoth It's music, not sports. Personally, I also think he is but enjoy both.

  • @SonicBrunoth Keith and Rik are and always have been good buddies - Rik had Keith on his show on Planet Rock a year ago - there was and is not any rivalry, they are both superb and are individuals who play how they want to and do not give a shit who is best

  • @sparkymachine Nothing could be further from the truth than your statement. If your just going to spout out your own made up fantasies,I think it would be better for you to just shut-up.Keith would not even speak to Rick for decades because even though Keith know he himself was musically more talented,he viewed Rick as a threat to his position as rock's undisputed greatest keyboardist. Many times Rick was called the best and most famous keyboardist in rock and that fueled the jealous fire.

  • @sparkymachine ty Sonic, quite right. @rematpac is just up his own arse. Tosser.

  • @SonicBrunoth dream on

  • Comment removed

  • @SonicBrunoth You are wrong man...Rick Wakeman is a goog player, but compare the Keith Emerson´s music with Rick Wakeman is like compare Salieri whit Mozart, and Rick now that... just see and hear this, maybe you will understand...

  • @SonicBrunoth Wrong!

  • @SonicBrunoth I'd pay to see them cut heads...

  • @SonicBrunoth add derek paravicini

  • Rick is the greatest! I got to see him with Yes when they toured to support Close To The Edge back in the 70's. He was incredible. A huge influence for my band. .

  • This is so beautiful! Rick, you have got magical fingers and this song is my favorite Yes song and there is no one that can perform it like you...I so love it and hope that you would tour the USA with Jon !!!! I miss the YES days and I will treasure those times in my heart forever....a true fan forever!

  • very beuti..magic..and splendid

  • Am SO glad that he did this!

  • There was a time when rock groups had real musicians in them.

  • @Topographer they still exist, you cant look in mainstream rock, you have to look in lesser known metal and black metal groups

  • is it me? or this video is kind of out of sync?

    Prog & Roll anyways

  • I love Roger Dean's work, but PLEASE, don't cut away from the master Wakeman! yeah

  • I have seen Yes live numerous times starting with the Fragile tour of 1972 and Wake man was always the most intriguing performer to watch. As a bassist and huge disciple of Squire, I find it odd to be drawn to Wakeman's performance but he was an absolute magician on stage.

  • Man, I wish there was sheet music for it. Such a shame that most of Wakeman's works aren't accessible through sheet music. I'm attempting to learn it by ear.. and it's not going so well :(

  • L'essence de YES est là !!! Rick c'Est Rick... Après on dira que les personnes qui font du "progressif" n'ont pas d'étude et de culture !!! Bravo malgré la rupture en le son et les images !!!

  • amazing.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Actually he's a killer musician

  • i want a steinway too!

  • That guy should take the music thing seriously, he might have a career someday.....

  • Great! As Always!

  • Comment removed

  • The problem is that the visual footage is slightly faster than the sound. But it is definitely him playing.

  • Wow -- magnificent!!!

  • Man O Man, what a cool arrangement of a classic song. The way he puts all that motion in the accompaniment and brings out the melody through it all is a perfect example of why Rick Wakeman's talent is so awesome. Now there's something to work towards. I love this clip!

  • the sound and picture are not synchronized properly. Nevertheless you hear what he played here.

  • you fucking knob

  • Excuse me, perhaps I wasn't clear... I meant that in this video he's not playing what sounds, not that he's not actually who has recorded it.

  • whatever you are talking about "what" sounds, is so unclear.

  • @EccoLima \

Your PC streaming is off. Get it fixed instead of making stupid comments about Wakeman.

  • @pithor Come on, not again!!! I didn't make any comments about Wakemann! I'm talking about the guy who did THIS. I play piano since 2001, believe me, he's movements dont fit with what sound.

I'M NOT SAYING HE HASN'T RECORDED IT!

Example: 2:34 he makes a "mordente", and you hear a full note. There's a lot of things like this.

I insist, the reason because I've started playing is because of him. So, please, if you want to comment, understand what the people are saying.

  • @EccoLima you seem to be correct here... i have no idea whats going on.

  • @EccoLima The audio and video are not in sync, however if you download the video and adjust the timing you will find that Rick is playing the song as shown here.

Sync problems are a common problem on YouTube.

  • Breathtaking!

  • Where to take notes?

  • Awesome!

  • very stunning

  • UniKum!

  • MAGIC ...BEAUTIFUL .... SWEET..

  • Da stimmt tatsächlich etwas nicht. Er trägt nicht nur plötzlich die Brille, an einigen Stellen sind Musik und Bild auch nicht synchron.

  • hmmmmmm...at 1:31 Rick is wearing glasses..........

  • 3:10

  • Amazing..... absolutely fantastic!!

  • Is this available on any CD? Anywhere. Once again, Rick shows just how gifted he is. I wish I had a fraction of his talent. I haven't heard how his health has been, but he definitely is in my prayers. I know I am blessed to have heard and seen him play. Rick, if you watch these posting, you are awesome! Thank you!!!! -------- Tim

  • Awesome

    Davvero incredibile Rick
