I took the instrumental part of this and put it together with a bit of finesse onto my home studio. I sang it about 200 times trying to get that effortless tom delivery. It's fun to sing it as he would sing it today...all rough as hell.

I hadn't heard anything by Tom Waits last month. As I started to get into Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, PJ Harvey, and Leonard Cohen,my dad recommended Tom Waits, especially his album Asylum Years. After a two day download of his discography I finally got to witness the originality, beauty and sheer class of mr Tom Waits. This song could be the most beautiful I have ever heard.

@DirgeForTomorrow oh yeah, I definitly agree with you, I dont download, I prefer to get everything on CD. but it doesnt really mean downloading is wrong. i suppose its what you prefer. if you live in a small place with not alot of space for CDs you can download them all on your computer.

But I fear that downloading music will replace CDs, and I really don't want that to happen :/

@justmebymyself I know what you mean, about being overwhelmed by him. Someone (younger than I obviously) blurted out a sort of confession on another video of his, "I LOVE THIS MAN MORE THAN MY OWN FATHER." I totally understand that feeling (not that I don't love my own dad, or wouldn't prefer the role of Tom's wife!). But it seemed like such a heartfelt proclamation from someone who's dad probably isn't all that bad. But TW is just a mountain of a man, his heart so HUGE that it breaks mine.
