Yes. Hetfield uses all downstrokes but it is much easier to get it up to tempo using alternate picking. If it sounds the same who cares how you pick it. I prefer alternate picking easier on my wrist and I prefer not give myself carpal tunnel syndrome trying to play it that fast with all downstrokes. LOL

The whole argument is that Hetfield thinks all down-strokes sound more "authentic" so he uses them whenever he can and made Jason Newstead do the same. Dunno about Kirk, but I'd guess he'd follow along too just to make it complete.

If you do it right, you shouldn't be able to tell the difference if a note is down-picked or up-picked. Chords definitely sound different, but if individual notes sound different you need to practice more.

Let's get some things straight, because a lot of "guitarists" commenting on this video seem to be misinformed. Firstly, The 12th fret on the low E is the exact some notes at the 7th fret on the A string. They are not octaves, for they have the exact same pitch. Also, James Hetfield played this rhythm with all downstrokes to get a more aggresive sound, even though it's really fucking hard to play that fast with all downpicking.

This guy's good. Several people who try and teach this song leave out the palm muting, but this guy incorporates it in flawlessly.

Lazy man's MoP intro: Play it all on the 6th string, starting on the 12th fret. It makes for a heavier sound,and it's a bit easier. But if you want a more authentic sound, play it the way the video shows you.

Killemall1983 has a lot to learn.

If they were discussing how Metallica starts this song off, they do it so many different ways, so shut that "that's not how metallica plays it" shit up. They start it with the standard E bar chord, or sometimes the E note/chord on the 7th fret of the A string, and sometimes even the chord using the 12th fret of the E string... they mix it up, there is no specific way Metallica does it.

Yeah Just hold the pick close to the edge and when you give the string a light tap with your thumb as you're picking you can get that sound. It sounds really nice with that distortion. I *suspect* he's using an old Boss MT-2 pedal. I have that same pedal and can produce an almost identical tone through a clean channel on most amps.
