ciao!mi chiamo giuseppe volevo dirti che questo video lo ascolto con piacere ogni sera!anch'io sono uno zampognaro e ne sono fiero di esserlo! ma di dove sei! per favore rispondi!!
I'm sorry I can't write in Italian. I'm glad you enjoy listening to the video, and that you play the zampogna--it must be difficult! I enjoy this music too, but I have no opportunity to hear it live, since I live in Mississippi, USA.
Emozionante complimenti a mudws.
Grazie! This recording was made in New York in 1917. Can you tell where in Italy the piper was from, by listening to the instrument and style? It sounds like two ciaramelle and zampogna. wlapita, I enjoy your videos of Calabrian music!
I can tell you that this is a calabrian bagpipe, the type and playing style from southern calabria, not northern calabria which shares the same pipe construction and playing style as Campania. If you want to see a video of what this pipe looks like, type "ciaramella" and click on the first video (la ciaramella di compare tigani) that comes up in the search. I'm a zampogna expert ;)
Many thanks for your help and expertise. The musician "wlapita" identifies this style as that of the Pollino district of northern Calabria. See his channel for videos of his group Totorella.
Well he is probably right ;) It's hard to tell from the sound of the instrument from the old recording (southern version has extra drone), but the finger movements sound more like what I've heard in S. calabria, but they could also incorporate that up north too. This also isnt the best song to determine from because it's a Christmas song played in all regions so it's difficult to make the distinction. If you compare a tarantella on zampogna from north and south there is a noticeable difference.
A voice from the past bringing comfort in todays world. Grazie
