I have had the chorus in my head since the 80's and had no idea what it was...I knew it was Level 42 but didn't know the song title. Thank you for uploading this! it brings back a lot of memories!!
@Mowac - I' would imagine that the reason behind that is that many of their songs would be in E, and so it would be easier to play 'Hot Water' in E as well, and saves them tuning in between songs, which would be especially annoying during a live set.
It was on this TOTP programme that Mark King approched Nik Kershaw and asked if he could play on his next record (album), which was to be the track "Easy" for The Riddle album.
This is playback. Mike King lets go of the bass several times while it's still playing in the background, and you can see that Mike Lindup doesn't play his synth in sync with the music several times too. Many artists used playback on smaller appearences in the 80's.
I think you mean Mark King. You probably just got confused because you were thinking about Mike Lindup too =) And yeah TOTP made the artists do the playback thing.
flippin hell! was it that long ago? this track changed my life
trivia: mimed with a pop act on TOTP a few yrs ago. the so called bass player was in fact a male model. i was dumbfounded when he signed a musicians union payment voucher. he wasn't even a member and he'd never played the bass in his life. after chatting up the entire canteen he realised that my advice about pacticing the appearance of looking like he could play may have made some kind of sense
Cool, but always sad and sort of funny to see them lip synch on some lame dance show. The best one is their Solid Gold appearance - they looked like they were ready to bust out laughing.
this song still sounds unbelievably fresh, even after al these years!!! incredible !!!

ToTP playback bullshit -.- why didn't they act like Nirvana did when they were at ToTP? That was massive lulz.

I never understood why the song was released in a higher key (F) than when they perform it live in standard open tuning (E).

It's also very common on TOTP in general
Even Abba did the whole playback thing a few times

Are they even playing? This sounds identical to the studio version, plus, King puts his hands off the bass several times but it keeps playing.
