  • this song still sounds unbelievably fresh, even after al these years!!! incredible !!!

  • i want the original official video back on! UMG just do it!

  • I didn't know screech was on a band

  • ToTP playback bullshit -.- why didn't they act like Nirvana did when they were at ToTP? That was massive lulz.

  • I have had the chorus in my head since the 80's and had no idea what it was...I knew it was Level 42 but didn't know the song title. Thank you for uploading this! it brings back a lot of memories!!

  • Man, these guys are the FUNK masters. Their back beat could drive a dozen eighteen wheelers. FUNK!

  • Live tomorrow night for me in SF and LA Saturday night!

  • mime-fest! lol

  • @JohnnyKwango they hated miming yet all of their best songs are on top of the pops

  • ABSOLUTE CLASSIC!!!!!!!! JUST LUV IT!!!!

    WOOOOOOH!!!!!

LOVE WATCHING MARK FLICK THAT BASS!!!!!

  • one of the greatest bass guitars ever !

  • This was one of the dancehits in the disco, great song....MORE fantastic `80`s music on my channel!!!!!

  • I never understood why the song was released in a higher key (F) than when they perform it live in standard open tuning (E).

  • @Mowac - vari-speed! The tape was sped up during the mix!

  • @Mowac - I' would imagine that the reason behind that is that many of their songs would be in E, and so it would be easier to play 'Hot Water' in E as well, and saves them tuning in between songs, which would be especially annoying during a live set.

  • james brown loved this :)

  • Greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaat.

  • It was on this TOTP programme that Mark King approched Nik Kershaw and asked if he could play on his next record (album), which was to be the track "Easy" for The Riddle album.

  • best bass playing ever

  • @dontpanicblink lip synched

  • a classic.......will never go away..

  • all theyr songs seems to be timless, how could do they do this ? Maybe cause they studied really music

  • unbelievable bass. especially when he takes it away at 2:08.

  • King never liked to mime anyway

  • maaaaaagiiccc song...coool, funky

  • The guys are timeless!!!!

  • Sons and Daughtersaaa in hot wataaaaaahhhh !! Rock on 42, thats what Ill be on 2 years!

  • This is playback. Mike King lets go of the bass several times while it's still playing in the background, and you can see that Mike Lindup doesn't play his synth in sync with the music several times too. Many artists used playback on smaller appearences in the 80's.

  • It's also very common on TOTP in general

Even Abba did the whole playback thing a few times

  • top of the pops made artists do it even if they didnt want to.

real artists complained about it. the show was shit, and the producers morons and thats why in the end it lost all credability, after years of patronizing the audience and was axed..

    andy peters, twat

  • I think you mean Mark King. You probably just got confused because you were thinking about Mike Lindup too =) And yeah TOTP made the artists do the playback thing.

  • Are they even playing? This sounds identical to the studio version, plus, King puts his hands off the bass several times but it keeps playing.

  • Just amazing music, Mark King is fantastic, definately a die hard Level 42 fan!

  • Not heard this in years....their best track

  • i agree,its so hard to get hold of,and i don't possess an i-pod so i-tunes not an option

  • Level 42 at there best!!

  • "thumbs" up for this vid!

  • I NUMERI UNO

  • Nice one Morgan! Good to see Mark using `our' Jaydee (sorry, your Jaydee!) up there! Hope you are well! Nick

  • flippin hell! was it that long ago? this track changed my life

trivia: mimed with a pop act on TOTP a few yrs ago. the so called bass player was in fact a male model. i was dumbfounded when he signed a musicians union payment voucher. he wasn't even a member and he'd never played the bass in his life. after chatting up the entire canteen he realised that my advice about pacticing the appearance of looking like he could play may have made some kind of sense

    fuking industry

  • This appearance on TOTP changed my life as it was the first time I had seen or heard the band. I can't believe I've found it here 24 years later!

The main thing I remember (apart from the music)was that the band really seem to be enjoying themselves, at a time when all the New Romantics were taking themselves far too seriously.

The next day, I bought the single. I was blown away by Standing in the Light on the B side and proceeded to buy their back catalogue by the end of that week.

  • That must have hurt to have to lip synch... They had to do what they had to do!

  • THE best out there more like!

  • Nice vid! I think it's very hard for really good musicians like these guys to lip-sync, they're an incredible live act...one of the best out there.

  • well done morgan another gem.

  • Cool, but always sad and sort of funny to see them lip synch on some lame dance show. The best one is their Solid Gold appearance - they looked like they were ready to bust out laughing.

  • Great Stuff Morgan
